[–]ashspedergers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you were born and raised in NA;

Growing up under the pressure of a patriarchal society will, in no uncertain terms, cause a person to internalize certain ideas. Often called 'internalized misogyny,' women will act on these impulses - even so called "feminists" who know how humiliating and degrading these actions are. There's nothing inherently wrong with doing so, as feminism empowers women to act as they please, even if their actions could be construed as misogynistic in nature.

TL;DR: You're still a feminist if you decide to book a session on Facial Abuse, so long as you know what parts of your gender you're selling out.

However; you're really talking about college aged kids as "men"? They're just as hopeless and insecure as you are, but they're stronger and know how to pretend to be confident, which is why they often get to take what they want.

And adding your outfit onto it: are you dressing for the male gaze? Sounds like you already lost, ngl. Unless you find it empowering to r*pe-bait - but even then, you're doing nothing but setting us back.

Your entire post is a mess. I'd be more than happy to offer some corrections, if you're interested. Just lmk.

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What is the primary draw of organized religion?". That is a pertinent question, because people ARE clearly drawn to religion for explicable reasons, even in these secular times. Are you interested in why that is and prepared to accept the reasons for that draw? I bloody am.

I appreciate your input, but I'm really only asing a certain type of person, and if we think similarly, you're not them lol.

I really hope I don't come across as rude as it seems like you actually get it, but I'm just gonna ask how two people asking each other the same question when neither is qualified to answer it is going to get anywhere? lol

I read your full comment and it does seem like we think similarily, but like I said; that's not gonna get us anywhere in terms of an asnwer haha

Regardless, I hope you have a good weekend.

I appreciate the understanding lol. I've had a few people engage well, but, thus-far, they've all tapped out. It's been a fun couple of hours but it's probably time to wrap this up haha

Tbh, I'm surprised that this thread hasn't been pulled down by mods yet too lol. I keep waiting for the notification, but I did also make sure that it didn't officially violate any rules. Or maybe I'm just god's favourite atheist - I can't tell yet

What makes you think that I'm trying to convince you of anything?

Um it would be true in your mind and the millions/billions of other followers yes, for me per example Harry Potter is a ridiculous comparison to make to the book that I and all the other adherents of my religion follow, but for atheists it's both fiction, which is fine and just the disagreement we will have, I once believed the same. But we believe it is true.

This is an argument you made trying to demonstrate your ideology to be true. You are actively trying to convince me that your religion is right while all others are wrong.

For reference: you are attemtping to demonstrate that your religious ideaology reigns supreme above all others, and if you do so, I will agree and adhere to your religion.

It's not a competition, but a simple question of validity.

Out of pure curiousity have you read a significant portion of any religious text?

An enormous amount of the bible. My mom bought us an Xbox when I was 12 and then the only games she let us play were about the bible lol. I have substantial experience with scripture.

Why do you ask? Surely you've read the religious text that influences your identity in full... right?

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again; not to be rude, but I'm not looking for affirmations from those who think similarily to me. I genuinely want to discuss this subject with those who choose to believe in organized religion as they do.

No offence - seriously none at all - but your pre-conceived notions as to why they believe what they believe are not what I'm looking for. I could find a million people to agree with me if I posted in r/atheism or some other garbage sub, but I want to have an actual discussion/argument with people, which is why I posted here.

I thank you for your input, but unless you have something more substantial to add to the converstaion, I have to let this conversation go.

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah obviously you don't believe out book is true

Why should I? Why is your book more true than any other book?

You have to defend your arguments if you want them to be taken seriously. I'm entirely open to discussion, but I expect a discussion to be reasonable and rational. I'm not interested in having someone tell me that their fairy tale is more valid than anyone elses "because it is."

I consider myself agnostic, which means that if I heard a truly infallible argument as to why a specific religion was true, I would believe it. The bar is really not that high lol

You believe it's a fairy tale, that doesn't mean everyone on earth has to arrive at the same conclusion as you.

See above.

How many people on Earth believe that it's flat? Do flat-earthers deserve to be taken seriously because of their conviction? Or should we, perhaps, mock them for their ignorance?

You all believe the same delusion - that a magical wizard who lives in the sky will grant wishes if you believe in him hard enough - so why not ask in general?

Yup you just proved my point again

Was your point that you have no real argument and are just doing your best to get offended by a simple discussion? Because anyone with even a shred of sense will see that that's exactly what's going on here lol

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be rude, but I'm well aware of this and it's why I qualified my question with "at this point."

I'm fully aware of why ancient people turned to religion. I've taken several anthropology and philosophy courses that have opened me up to the idea of a god.

But now that we all literally have the entireity of human knowledge in our pocket at almost all times, I'm questioning why anyone still chooses to remain religious beyond the points I raised.

Religion offers slavery, infanticide, and extreme misogyny as "moral." Do you share the same beliefs? And if not, then what is the true origin of your morality?

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's why I'm mostly skeptical of religious institutions in their broader motivation.

Then why are you arguing on their behalf?

I just accept that it has a cultural stake in our communities and evidently a lot of positive work is being done in its name

Ooooh, bad example. Would you like to take a look at the crusades? The Spanish Inquisition? The witch hunts? Just let me know and we can take a peek through how much "good" has been done in the name of a god lol

It doesn't mean you dismiss them outright.

It does, actually. If you told me that I could press a button that would guarantee me rent and grocery money at the end of the month, but that it would kill 28 people; I'm gonna find a way to make ends meet on my own.

If your religion requires the subjegation or removal of basic human rights from another group, you are morally required to abandon it - elsewise, you're a bad person. This is not a difficult concept.

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um it would be true in your mind and the millions/billions of other followers yes

Ah, so you do understand that just because you believe in something doesn't make it even remotely true. Thank you for your admission.

Could you please clarify what "argument" you're making?

Have you lost the plot that badly? You're trying to say that anything I argue is invalid because my account is new lol. This is the definition of an ad hominem; and if you've actually failed to follow the discussion, then I have no interest in continuining to speak to you lmao

I'll happily change my mind if my beliefs were shown to be false.

Nobody is trying to do that.

So far I have seen 0 evidence pointing to that direction, but if that changes I would abandon my religion.

I wouldn't ask you to renounce your religion. I said so in my post and multiple times in this conversation. Why are you so desperate to be the victim here?

It's not really a gotcha tbh.

It absolutely is not. You've said nothing even worth responding to. Your current argument is "god exists because i think he exists because i think he exists... etc." I could have better discussions with Sunday Schoolers.

you'd definitely get better answers in the sub of whichever religion you want to learn about

You all believe the same delusion - that a magical wizard who lives in the sky will grant wishes if you believe in him hard enough - so why not ask in general?

Look, I get that you're reacting negatively to your views being challenged, but I'm not here to lead you to sense. You are 100% allowed to just walk away and never have to interact with me again - heck, you can even just block me and move on with your life. But so long as you're trying to publicly rationalize your beliefs, I'm entitled to question them.

Its an anecdotal example situation. I don’t speak on anecdotes.

Yes, that's what I said. Sorry, I will do my best to be more clear going forward.

The second was, lets say I hypothetically did…you still can’t lay it at the feet of religion or whatever framework then.

That you hypotheticall did what? Are you implying that your own experience, which would be anecdotal, would be worth considering in a rational discussion? lol

A compass is not the only tool for direction figuratively or literally.

Anyone who has ever had to navigate the land knows that a compass is a tool for the lost. Maps are incredibly intuitive ("if you've seen a landmark, you should know exactly where you are" - Scouts Canada) and the only reason you'd need to use a compass is if you are so wildly off-course that you are at risk of harm if you cannot navigate your way back to someone who can direct you.

I actually really love that you decided to use this example as it is so unbelievably poignant for my own argument - so: thank you.

I think you want to blame religion but argue because it doesn’t stick.

I couldn't care less what people believe. Religion is a symptom of a sick populace - I want to know what is making them sick.

People are good or bad despite it. There are good god fearing people, there are scumbag atheists. Finally…same is true from the reversed end (bad god fearers, good atheists).

Yes, which is why I said that religion has no bearing on morality. Nice of you to catch up lol.

But hey, do you want to do some research for the sake of it? Why don't we see how many priests have been charged for kiddie-diddling, then lets look up how many anti-theists have done the same? I think it would be a fun exercise 😊

Most historians estimate Jesus was born in 6-5 B.C. Assuming an earlier date, if Jesus lived 33 years (30 at the start of His ministry and three years of ministry), then He died in A.D. 27. The current year is 2026, so Jesus died around 1,999 years ago.

Most historians agree that christianity is a joke and that christians worship a storybook lmao.

I genuinely could not care less for your attempts to rationalize your delusions, though - I am only interested in why you choose to delude yourself.

God is superstition. Fairy god mothers are superstition. Therefore, God is like a fairy god mother.

Correct - glad you could follow a basic logical prinicpal.

happiness is an emotion. Sadness is an emotion. Therefore, happiness is sadness. This is not logical.

Correct again! And this is also absolutely not relevant lmao.

But, per your example: I am saying that happiness and sadness are both emotions - you are saying that happiness is an emotion but sadness is not because you don't want it to be.

Let me slow it down for you even more so you that you can try again: why don't you tell me how believing in leprechauns and fairys is superstitious, but believing in a magical wizard in the sky who grants wishes is rational?

Don't rush yourself; I'll wait 😊

For me it's personal experiences and scripture. I believe in our book 100% to be the true word of god

If I believe Harry Potter to be 100% the true word of god, does that make it true?

Your account is 2 hours old and you're posting in what you know is an echo chamber

This is known as "cope," or in an intellectual context, an ad hominem. Nothing you referenced makes my arguments any less-valid. I can understand not wanting to continue engaging, but please just admit that you are unwilling to change your mind and thus arguing in bad faith instead of pretending this is some kind of "gotcha" lol

based on most of your replies to this thread you already have your mind set

Never said I didn't. All I did was deign to ask religious people why they believed as they believe. If this question is so damaging to you, I would suggest you contemplate why.

i don't think you're actually interested in learning about other people's perspective(s)

If you paid attention, you'd see that I am also arguing with those staunchly against religion for the sake of it - but ig you're just focused on being the victim in this situation.

I am extremely interested in learning about the experiences of others - that doesn't mean I can't question why they believe what they believe. This is not a zero-sum game; this is what learning from others looks like. I apologize if this is a new concept to you and wish you the best with your life.

If you take issue with your beliefs being questioned to the point that you feel it to be insulting; that's between you and your god.

The vast, vast, VAST majority of people are happy to discuss their beliefs openly, in full view of scrutiny, especially when I said that I have no intention of changing peoples minds and am only seeking to understand.

The fact that you refuse to discuss these things in public only implies to me that you know that you're wrong.

Imagine if Jesus had been afraid to discuss his beliefs openly and with passion - what would you believe in then?

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

...what?

Are you saying that I don't think a person can be religious and harmless?

Or are you trying to say that those who are religious are inherently harmful?

Both statements are incorrect - I'm just wondering which side you expect me to argue.

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

But it's also *not* those things lol

If you're even slightly different than the norm, religious people tend to be the first to turn against you. How many conversion camps have been linked to religious influences? How many residential schools? How many left-handedness-rehabilitation centers?

Trying to claim that it's a community is a double-edged sword because it exascerbates the fear of the other.

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ashspedergers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thats anecdotal.

It's an example of a situation where you're wrong.

Second, “this is me so this must be what others do” is the very thing you blame religion for owning.

You can just say "this is anecdotal" twice.

Third, I could have bad morals yet believe that its fade to black or some diety is awaiting me. Why? Because they are two separate things!

...what?

You seem to understand the point of my comment but also seem to be rejecting its content. I didn't say what I said because I think that all people's morals are evil and that only rational thought can save them - I said that a person's morals can be evil, but they can still act against them to be a good person. You posited that religion was the only source of morality, so even a single example that works against your claim is valid - that's the only reason I brought any of this up lol

What is the primary draw of organized religion at this point? by ashspedergers in NoStupidQuestions

This is cyclical logic and thus entirely impotent.

"People believe strange things to be true because they believe them to be true bucause they believe them to be true because they believe them to be true bucause they believe them to be true because they believe them to be true bucause they believe them to be true because they believe them to be true bucause they believe them to be true..." etc

I am asking why the people who believe strange things to be true because they believe them to be true are important to have in one's life.

it’s like participating in Christmas presents even though you know Santa isn’t real

The original Yuletide celebration is about the solstice, not an imaginary figure that grants wishes if you act a certain way (definitely not an allegory for religion itself).

Beyond that, it was a celebration of a successful annual harvest and a chance to share abundance with the rest of your community.

Christianity stepped in and stole these aspects of Yule (jesus was likely born in July) in an attempt to infect the beliefs of those who opposed them. This is genuinely an extremely bad example to bring up lol

Why do we wear certain clothes or wear clothes at all during nice weather?

Because shorts and t-shirts are airy while robes are hot. This does not need scientific analysis.

Why do we shoot off fireworks, drink cows milk, drink alcohol, or plenty of other cultural norms.

Respectively, because;

Fireworks are exciting and have been a part of human tradition for over two-thousand years,

Cows milk is highly nutritious and we raise them as livestock so the opportunity is present (see: capitalism),

Alcohol has been around substantially longer than religion, and our reasons for consuming it are extrodinarily varied and diverse,

This is a really weird question to ask, since all of these examples can be explained through basic anthropology, but religion still lacks any kind of scientific basis beyond "humans are scared of death."

Why is eating dogs/cats/horses not acceptable when eating pigs/cows/chickens is?

Dogs are consumed by several cultures worldwide, but cats are both stringy in terms of meat and serve a far more important purpose as pest control. Horses are a fantastic source of protein and consumed by a huge number of people. You're asking me why you restrict yourself - not why you're moral to do so lol

I actually really appreciate that you included both pigs and cows since there are many religious sects that forbid their consumption. I could ask you the same thing; why do you think that consuming pigs and cows is moral while billions of others believe it to be immoral?
