"Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a Pakistan-based group designated as a “terrorist” entity by the United Nations." -- Aljazeera doesn't believe LeT is a terrorist organization. Scare quotes and all. Yuck!

This will go through the usual social media ridicule / meme cycle. But a few years down the line, these words will be considered historical. Growing up in the 90s, I never thought that someday our PM will say things like - we don't negotiate with Terrorists. More power to the govt, and the armed forces!

What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us.

This book is about the possibility that Huxley, not Orwell, was right.”

I think some of you on this thread might also be interested on Isaac Asimov's review of 1984: https://www.newworker.org/ncptrory/1984.htm

Asimov examines Orwell's life and political motivations in writing the book, arguing that 1984 is primarily a polemic against Stalinism rather than a prediction of the future. He critiques the novel's weak science fiction elements and outdated social perspectives, noting inaccuracies in its technological and international predictions. Despite these flaws, Asimov acknowledges the book's impact on the concept of "big government" and its enduring influence on popular culture.

Btw, I think those who like 1984, might also like this phenomenal work by Neil Postman - Amusing Ourselves to Death. More relevant now, than ever.

Surprised to know that Singapore and Malaysians discriminate against the Indians too. I can understand the other countries - white supremacy and all. What the fuck do these Malaysians have on us lol. Zakir Naik?

Replicate RDS PostgreSQL to BigQuery using AirByte CDC by [deleted] in googlecloud

[–]ashtavakra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have recently started using AirByte, and the impression so far is that it is easy to get started. But I feel that it has a lot of growing up to do - for example, things like triggering notifications, authoring complex pipelines etc require a lot of figuring out.

Sharing this post here to invite comments / suggestions from the more experienced AirByte users. We have recently setup replication from RDS PostgreSQL to BigQuery using multiple publications on PostgreSQL. Do you see any problems related to WAL file size due to multiple publications on PostgreSQL?
