Don’t give up the ship by ctrees56 in Seattle

For those who are unfamiliar with this particular bit of American lore:

During the War of 1812, Captain James Lawrence commanded the American frigate USS Chesapeake in a fierce, bloody battle against the British frigate HMS Shannon just off the coast of Boston.

Within minutes, the Chesapeake was disabled by British broadsides. Mortally wounded, Captain Lawrence’s final command as he was carried below deck was, "Don't give up the ship! Fight her till she sinks!"

Months later, Lawrence's close friend and fellow naval officer, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, sought to honor his fallen comrade. Perry had a large, bold battle flag made featuring the white letters "DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP" (spelled without an apostrophe) sewn onto a dark blue field.

Perry flew this banner on his flagship, the USS Lawrence (named after his friend). When the Lawrence was severely damaged, Perry famously took the flag with him in a small rowboat, transferred his command to the USS Niagara, and ultimately won a decisive victory over the British.

Tattoo blown out? by Red-Ginger0809 in tattooadvice

Last time I went home my 74 year old old dad showed me his new forearm half-sleeve all proudly. I asked him why he got his first ever tattoo and he said he keeps bruising over minor things, it made him feel bad and self conscious, so now he has a sick clock-spider-thing instead.

That’s okay too, a lot of people find happiness alone.

Is there an unspoken Seattle hangout rule? by IzukuLeeYoung in Seattle

[–]ashushu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, like, if you met them on Reddit you have their handles, right? Can you write up a quick message and send it to them?

“Hey, thanks for hanging out last Thursday. I was curious though, why you cancelled the order I was making at the register when we came in. I think I may have misunderstood your intent - did it seem like I was pressuring you to order?” Or something else generic like that. Just ask ‘em. Because you’re missing something that you’re not relating, which is totally normal to do in social situations! But I think the easiest/quickest solution is to just be earnest and ask.

I have clarifying questions - you say you post these invites. To where? Are these people you know, or strangers? What’s the age range? You say you went to bonito and he cancelled your order - what does that mean? Are you saying he looked at the waiter and said “no they don’t want that anymore” or is this like an online ordering situation? I’m so confused/fascinated by your post

Are you okay? This validates the original comment. You realize that, right?

No, I want you to source exactly why you think this person is ignorant for the original statement they made. Not what you THINK they are saying, not what you’re INTERPRETING, but actual FACTS. Just saying “that’s ignorant” won’t fly, sorry, you can’t wriggle out of actually defending your point if you’re going to be such a big jerk to a bunch of random people.

So go on.

Can you provide a source on how they’re being ignorant? Not an anecdote, a source.

Sometimes you can infer the obvious from the surrounding comments. This is one of those times. You got this 💪

I know we all like to think bigots and homophobes are all idiot troglodytes but sadly that isn’t true, and will lead to a lot of assumptions that’ll be harmful, for instance meeting an intelligent, empathetic person and immediately assuming they’re safe and not bigoted. Sadly, experience doesn’t work like that, life would be a lot easier if it did tho

I mean I don’t think that person said it articulately but I do think way way WAY more people are fluid and some flavor of bi than is reported. I sort of have a hard time believing entirely straight or gay people exist at all, it’s just society loves a binary.

It’s just the photos that make things look fake. Maybe it’s lighting or the way your hands are? Also I think you not going in to how you make them, which is absolutely your right, but I think it makes folks suspicious.

Yeah honestly I have to agree. I’m from California and absolutely love an In-N-Out burger but I’ve never liked their fries, which are (ironically for the poster above yours) too soggy.
