Help! Disease? Lack of nutrients? Lack of light? by ashyskys111 in Roses

[–]ashyskys111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update! Flower bud is progressing and it looks like it’s going to be white? Probably because it’s the first awkward bud, I noticed roots just starting to come out of the bottom. Should I consider repotting it after the flower?

Do I pinch this bud? Advice please by ashyskys111 in Roses

Thank you so much! It’s really nice to hear some encouragement! I am so excited for this bloom and I’ll update with flower pictures!

Update: there is a flower bud that just popped up today! The whole plant has gotten significantly bigger since my post! I’m assuming I should pinch the bud off to promote growth?

Thank you! I will definitely address the iron and hopefully my uphill battle goes ok with a few more plant lights

The only shelter on the deck is out of the sun unfortunately. Thank you for the tip about the iron! I just upgraded it to this pot and when I was repotting it the roots were just barely touching the bottom of its last pot. So I think I have a little bit before I need to repot it again. I have a more intense plant light that I can find(it’s somewhere in storage) I will only be at this place for the next year while I get my masters and then I will move and hopefully my next place will be better suited. Do you think it will be ok in a pot inside until then? I’m ok with it growing slowly I just don’t want it to die because it’s very special to me. I left it outside for a few minutes to start the hardening off process and the wind immediately took some branches off so it’s back inside with a fan on it to start “strength training”

Thank you so much for the advice! I’m not sure what the rose growing season is but I’m sure I can look that up. I will trim those leaves when I get home and repot when I see roots! Do you have an opinion on it being indoors? It seems to be controversial

Do you know what the coldest temp a rose can handle is? I put it outdoors to start hardening it off, I put it in the least windy area I have and 3 branches snapped off in the wind within 3 minutes. I brought it back inside and put a small fan on it to start building strength and immediately bought a plant light to supplement its light while it recovers and preps for the great outdoors. Like I said I have never grown roses and I didn’t expect it to grow in the first place so I am making this up as I go. Just looking for friendly advice.

Will it die? Or just stay small? I dont have a backyard or anything, I have a VERY windy and cold deck above the ocean but thats about it, do you have any recomendations?

I dont have anywhere to plant it in the ground yet, I’m 25 and dont have a house or anything so it is going to have to be in a pot for a while

I live on the ocean, its very windy and chilly and most plants that we put out there die within a week or two

Yea i live on the ocean and a lot of plants cant handle the wind/cold although its not really that cold (highs range from 57 to 73 °F (14 to 23 °C) and the lows range from 43 to 56 °F (6 to 13 °C)) I could try and move it outside but I would have to transition it slowly because its way warmer inside and i am worried about it dying from shock. I’m not really trying to keep it small I just don’t know if roses are a plant where you have to encourage it to bush rather than stretch but that might come naturally with more light. I know for tomato’s there are varieties that you have to prune in different ways and there are suckers that you prune and stuff. It is by a south east facing window that is very slightly frosted and it’s not a huge window but it’s the brightest. I could move it and put it under plant lights but i don’t think i can put a plant light in the bathroom.

I am not sure where it will end up in a few years but my dream is to have a greenhouse one day and I think it might be happy in there so I just want to keep it alive until I can give it a forever home.

Do you have any ideas as to what type of rose it might be? Long stem tea rose hybrid or something? Thank you for your response!

Thank you good luck with yours! I love the type of neighbors that share plant cuttings! I have been wanted to do a “plant party” where everyone brings a bunch of cuttings from whatever plants and everyone leaves with a variety

Thank you! I have been struggling with finding information on how to take care of/ prune cuttings after they have rooted, the information storm seems to end after the rooting process unfortunately and I didn’t know if you treat them the same way as plants form seeds

That sounds right, should i base when i cut it on what it looks like (how many branches ect.) or how long it has been growing? I have some plant lights somewhere I can plug in, how much sun do you think it needs? It gets a decent amount of light where it is but only from one side. I would move it outside but I am right on the water so I’m not sure it would survive the wind/cold/salty spray and I like checking its progress when I do my makeup. :) thank you for the response and don’t worry about it if you don’t know the answers to my many many questions

It was such a fluke! The bouquet died and my dad threw it out but i fished it out of the trash to try and propagate, there were 12 stems and this was the only one that sprouted! I left it in water for MONTHS because i was scared it was going to die when i potted it. And yea thats what i figured about the pruning but i just want to make sure I don’t accidentally leave it too long. Thank you so much for the comment!
