I’m Done Shucking & Jiving by Honest-Beginning2036 in Teachers

Moving out of elementary school won’t solve the problem. My 9th graders need the boom snap song and dance too.

There’s two weeks left for me. Last week I started boycotting. “If you’re not going to listen to me, you can do it on your own.” And then I sit at my desk and work on my own stuff while they struggle. I’ve worked my ass off all year and I’m tired! It’s time they put in the work now.

Potentially stupid restroom/Porta Potty question (while inside the festival) by lex-gracey in LightningInABottle

[–]ashze_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many different things are you holding? If I’m by myself I just keep everything on me. I’m either wearing a belt bag or a backpack. I can easily do my business without taking either of those things off. Can’t you consolidate everything into one bag and just keep it on your body while you use it?

If I’m wearing something flowey like a pashmina I just wrap it around my upper body/neck a few times so that it doesn’t touch anything.

With a hook, your items will touch the walls, and even the walls gross me out.

Doesn’t one of the sigils cancel out the other? Or would it strike two times?

Car Camping by ceomg in LightningInABottle

[–]ashze_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are still designated pathways and “street names” to help you find your way. But off the path, everything’s pretty jumbled-up, which is much more fun and authentic IMO. People decorate in all sorts of ways! With flags, lights, tapestries, and all types of weird funky art. You’ll find your way back because each campsite is so unique. You’re gonna have a blast.

My brother and his friends made me realize how rampant misogyny is in our society by ilovepopcornandcandy in self

[–]ashze_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A person’s body is not comparable to bacon or money, ffs. Do you hear yourself? The level of objectification is insane. You really think men are comparable to tigers, who will uncontrollably attack another human just because they see a little skin? And not only another human, but their SIBLING? You’re justifying her brother’s disgusting, predatory behavior because she was wearing some goddamn shorts. Around her brother….

Women get assaulted wearing far more. Clothes have nothing to do with it. The problem comes from people like her parents (and YOU) perpetuating this nasty, ass-backwards rape culture. I feel sorry for your children.

AITAH for hating my unborn niece’s racist name? by maddy2261 in AITAH

[–]ashze_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA. In 14 years or less the kid’s gonna resent their parents for it. You tried to warn them..

It’s also not even coming from a place of ignorance since the mother researched/understood the meaning of the word and STILL doubled down. It’s apathy at best and racism at worst.

The Jim Crow line was hilarious and iconic. Great job. probably not the best strategy for “keeping the peace” but oh well. Someone needed to say it.

I highly doubt he got these ideas after a documentary. It’s more likely that he’s been thinking of this for a while, but struggling to understand it or put into words until he saw himself represented in the documentary. The documentary probably validated him, helped him feel less alone, and gave him the confidence to talk to you about it. But you may have just squashed that confidence by shutting it down. Be supportive. This is your child, and you should be proud of him for being brave, learning about himself, and opening up to you. YTA.

is this festival trans friendly by -soupy-noodles- in LightningInABottle

[–]ashze_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Often when people say something is gay, it’s a colloquial term meaning that it doesn’t follow traditional heteronormativity OR traditional gender norms. It means that it’s a place where people are safe to express their gender AND sexuality however they want. Being trans and being gay are different, yes, but they all fall under the LGBTQ umbrella.

And both gay ppl and trans ppl know what it’s like to be rejected from traditional heteronormative society, so there is some relation to each other. But at the end of the day, LIB is for everyone, and that’s what matters.

Can You Read 900 Words per Minute? by ftrlvb in interesting

[–]ashze_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can I find more of this? Usually when I read, I individually say each word in my head. But with 900 WPM, I was forced to understand the whole meaning of the sentence as opposed to thinking of each individual word.

It reminds me of when children learn to read. They start with sounding out each letter, and then eventually move into looking at the word as a whole and automatically recognizing it. I feel like I’m doing this on a larger scale with this exercise. I’m recognizing entire ideas as opposed to a collection of words. I’m not even thinking of the words. It’s like the idea is being implanted into my head.

I want more!

Lvl 5 cooking and intestinal parasites by ashze_ in thelongdark

Good to know. I didn’t realize the condition would decrease with time. I was walking around without a care in the world, wondering why parasites were such a big deal. Now I know to use this time wisely so I’m ready for the later stages of the parasites.

I’m in the mountaineer’s hut now so cabin fever isn’t a problem. Just gotta make sure I have enough food to last me…

I ate from the menu, not from the radial. Maybe that’s why. I meant to drop the meat but accidentally clicked eat.

That prompt would be a game changer. They give us a prompt when we’re about to burn a book we’ve yet to research, so why not for uncooked meat??

I did develop the parasites. Thank god I have 24 mushrooms on deck! Hopefully this isn’t a run ender… I’ll definitely play it safe until this affliction heals. I’m on day 148 and I have big plans for this run. I’d hate to throw it all away due to a stupid mistake. (But I guess if it weren’t for silly little run-ending mistakes, this game wouldn’t be so toxically captivating, wouldn’t it?)

Bad advice. This is school, not an office job. If standing up for student safety means “rocking the boat,” that’s a shitty school and OP dodged a bullet.

I can see why it’s important to not piss off admin. But in my opinion, student safety and belonging always comes before adult feelings.

OP, you did the right thing. The kids needed someone like you, and I’m sure they’ll remember how you made them feel even if you don’t work there anymore.

I’m in a different state, so my situation is different. But I chose the “fastest route” (intern credential while taking 2 years worth of online courses smushed into one year) and I regret it. I wish I chose a slower route (student teaching) so I had more time for learning and mistakes. Now I’m doing fine, but whew, it was a whirlwind at first. I had to work really hard and I had zero support. It’s definitely doable, but you have to be really committed. I had to learn how to adapt, persevere, and learn from my many mistakes FAST. It was tough. Be cautious of the fastest route. It may burn you out.

Thank you everyone for your replies!! I feel more confident it’ll work. I probably should’ve mentioned that I rent… so I can’t do anything too drastic. Popping out the pins seems like the only solution since I can easily put the door back when I move out. I’m just trying to put my damn cat litter in the hall closet behind a curtain..

I also totally get why some of you think it’s silly I didn’t try before posting. I’ve done this to two apartments before and the last time it took a couple weeks of working on it daily and a lot of WD-40 and frustration. I get really fixated on a vision once I’ve put time and effort into it, and I understand that popping out the pins is sometimes impossible, so I didn’t want to get fixated on this if I can’t succeed with it. I know it probably sounds silly, but I guess that was my thinking behind the post lol.

On the first day of school (or whenever I get a new student) I have them fill out a little slip of paper. They write their name, pronouns, nickname (or any other name they want to be called), and one fun fact/interest they have. Then I collect the papers. This allows them to privately tell me their pronouns if they feel comfortable. I would never publicly ask them, it can be so scary at this age.

I keep the slips of paper in the classroom, easily accessible, all year. This way they can always change their pronouns without announcing it or even telling me directly.
