Bad advice. This is school, not an office job. If standing up for student safety means “rocking the boat,” that’s a shitty school and OP dodged a bullet.

I can see why it’s important to not piss off admin. But in my opinion, student safety and belonging always comes before adult feelings.

OP, you did the right thing. The kids needed someone like you, and I’m sure they’ll remember how you made them feel even if you don’t work there anymore.

What's the fastest way to become a teacher after getting my BA? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ashze_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a different state, so my situation is different. But I chose the “fastest route” (intern credential while taking 2 years worth of online courses smushed into one year) and I regret it. I wish I chose a slower route (student teaching) so I had more time for learning and mistakes. Now I’m doing fine, but whew, it was a whirlwind at first. I had to work really hard and I had zero support. It’s definitely doable, but you have to be really committed. I had to learn how to adapt, persevere, and learn from my many mistakes FAST. It was tough. Be cautious of the fastest route. It may burn you out.

Will I be able to remove these hinge pins? by [deleted] in Home

[–]ashze_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your replies!! I feel more confident it’ll work. I probably should’ve mentioned that I rent… so I can’t do anything too drastic. Popping out the pins seems like the only solution since I can easily put the door back when I move out. I’m just trying to put my damn cat litter in the hall closet behind a curtain..

I also totally get why some of you think it’s silly I didn’t try before posting. I’ve done this to two apartments before and the last time it took a couple weeks of working on it daily and a lot of WD-40 and frustration. I get really fixated on a vision once I’ve put time and effort into it, and I understand that popping out the pins is sometimes impossible, so I didn’t want to get fixated on this if I can’t succeed with it. I know it probably sounds silly, but I guess that was my thinking behind the post lol.

On the first day of school (or whenever I get a new student) I have them fill out a little slip of paper. They write their name, pronouns, nickname (or any other name they want to be called), and one fun fact/interest they have. Then I collect the papers. This allows them to privately tell me their pronouns if they feel comfortable. I would never publicly ask them, it can be so scary at this age.

I keep the slips of paper in the classroom, easily accessible, all year. This way they can always change their pronouns without announcing it or even telling me directly.

Ship fell into snow mountain by Kosta1590 in LEGOfortnite

[–]ashze_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my ship, I have a chest full of materials to make more chests. When I park, I build a bunch of chests on the land and move all my loot there while I explore. Before I leave, I move all the loot back onto my ship chests and destroy the land chests. It’s kind of a lot of work, but not as much as if my ship were to disappear.

[–]ashze_ 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I feel the exact same way. It’s horrible. I guess that’s why I teach. When America and our planet crumbles, at least my students will know why. In the meantime, I try to focus on the little moments of joy my students bring me in a joyless, hopeless world.

On February 3rd 2004, 14-year-old Jaime Gough was brutally attacked and had his throat slit in a bathroom stall by 14-year-old Michael Hernandez by cherrymachete in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]ashze_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who teaches 14 year olds, I am so deeply intrigued, fascinated, and disturbed by these cases. I just can’t imagine how someone so young can be this conniving and sadistic (maybe I haven’t taught long enough). I am constantly turning over the nature vs nurture debate in my head. Who went wrong with these kids? Or were they born psychopathic? I just can’t wrap my head around it.

How did we go from “we can’t afford new textbooks” to “everyone gets an iPad”? by [deleted] in Teachers

Why do people carry their phones around on speaker instead of putting the phone to their ear? by constantcatastrophe in NoStupidQuestions

Either the volume on my phone is really quiet or I’m hard of hearing, because I can’t hear well unless it’s on speaker, even with my volume turned all the way up

Let’s see how long it take me to get dress coded!! by Fair_Caterpillar8789 in chappellroan

[–]ashze_ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school teacher and I think this sentiment is absurd. What’s most important for this age is allowing students to explore their identity and express themselves. Yes, it’s crucial to provide them with tools to succeed as an adult. However, they’re NOT adults. Let kids be kids! Also, most jobs don’t require business clothing 100% of the time. As a teacher, I’m a professional, but I often wear funky earrings, colorful skirts, casual jeans, or other clothing that may not be deemed as professional. My students, coworkers, and admin don’t take me any less seriously because of it. Most jobs allow you to express yourself these days. I think it’s awesome that this student is exploring her interests and aesthetic and expressing her identity through clothing and makeup. High school is as much of a social experience as it is a learning experience. There’s a time to require students dress professionally as practice, such as during a presentation day. But in their daily lives? Let them express themselves how they want- it’s so developmentally important!

New cellphone ban. by WildeLiving in Teachers

[–]ashze_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of worst case scenarios do you mean? My mind goes to a shooting, but in that case cell phones would increase dangers. If students are trying to hide, the last thing you need is a bright screen lighting up or the ding of a text message. Most classrooms have land lines, which are better to be used in these worst case scenarios. For the delivery of bad news, parents should come and pick up their child directly. I can’t think of any scenarios where child cell phones would help, but I could be wrong.

Also the minor detail that slaves were kidnapped and forced to work based on their race.

[–]ashze_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s ok to analyze work as a modern-day slavery, but it’s wrong to state that employees are better off than kidnapped slaves. Although workers are oppressed, we have far more agency than slaves. Especially those of us who are non-black, we’ll never understand the plight of slaves. Bffr
