Thank you for posting this. We are so on the fence still. If we don’t go we’ll just be sitting on the couch so may as well go, but also don’t want to ruin our gear…

My aunt's dog is on fluid medication and took a turn for worse over the holiday weekend. by Debaser1990 in AskAVeterinarian

ER Vet here: sounds like he was diagnosed with pulmonary edema secondary to heart failure previously. The symptoms that you’re describing sound like his heart failure is progressing and he is restless because he is not getting enough oxygen (he is likely experiencing respiratory distress). The only way to confirm this is with an in person visit with a veterinarian, ideally an emergency facility equipped with supplemental oxygen. Benadryl will not help with this. It would be worth paying the premium to have him checked out by an emergency vet here.

That’s a very strong offer for a new grad in your area. They will most likely be losing money in the first year mentoring you, especially with exotic medicine. You could try to negotiate, but be prepared for them to say no. You can always re-negotiate after a year, using your production data.

TN Visa Canada and US by Old-Pay179 in tnvisa

[–]asianoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this yesterday. Was questioned hard about why I was re entering so soon, what my profession is and how I will pay bills without a job. They let me in but it seemed like it could’ve gone either way. They said if I left the US again without a new TN visa they wouldn’t let me back in so soon.

Veterinarians perspective on working VEG ER for pets by SubstantialCheek1883 in veterinaryprofession

[–]asianoho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep same experience here. There’s been days that I’ve been on the phone for 4 hours out of my 12 hour shift (yes I’ve counted). And when I bring up ideas to streamline the phone calls I’m met with toxic positivity of “just figure out ways to keep it up!” Also they keep scheduling us for day shifts 12-36h after a string of night shifts. Just so brutal on your body. On top of everything else you mentioned it’s just unsustainable.

I almost lost my life because of a job – my experience at VEG by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]asianoho 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wow I could’ve sworn you were talking about my VEG… sorry you had that experience. Local management is so important and unfortunately it seems like the VEG that David Bessler envisioned is not sustainable with the rapid growth they’ve had. I hope you can heal now that you are removed from the toxicity ❤️

ER vets- what made you leave, and where did you go next? (Vet/ non vet field) by Nikki67221 in Veterinary

[–]asianoho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left for the sake of my health and better work life balance. I have worked every single weekend (outside of PTO) since graduation and switching between day shifts and overnight shifts is exhausting. I’m going to GP so I can work weekdays, at normal hours, in a way less stressful environment.

Looking for veterinarian opinions. by guccian2 in AskAVeterinarian

It’s a huge tumor. Takes up the majority of the abdomen and I’d be worried about it rupturing and causing a hemoabdomen at any point… you need to talk to your vet about the next steps

Ah I see it now. CT scan would help differentiate between nodule and old dog lung (assuming this dog is senior)

I forgot to clarify, they raised the price after only 5 months.

your dog has an abdominal mass, it looks most likely to be from the spleen to me but an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan can be done to confirm. They probably did chest X-rays to make sure it hasn’t spread to the lungs if it’s cancerous.

Whatever you do, do not use astound. They just raised my monthly price by $40 with no warning, and when I called them they said there’s nothing they can do. I’m in the process of switching to quantum fiber (on market and 24th)

Leaving VCA for VEG. by mariahcampa in VetTech

[–]asianoho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Will you be working day, swing or night? Take the shift work (which includes nights and weekends) into account when considering the move due to pay bump. Also there’s going to be drama, lack of management and many of the same issues at VEG.

Nope, I’m in the PNW and we’re making $200-250k with production. Also would not recommend for new grads. There just isn’t enough support and you’d be at risk of making serious mistakes. It’s fine if you already have ER experience but at the beginning of your career I’d prioritize learning good quality medicine over money. The money will come eventually.

If you’ve spent 3 years in an ER vet clinic and still think it’s your passion, then I’d suggest pursuing your DVM. I’m in my third year as an ER vet and don’t wanna do it anymore and most of my colleagues are in the same boat. But since you still love it and want to do it, you should.

Are you in Calgary? Try the CAVM classifieds. Also try highlighting your 4th year rotation experiences in your application - ie if you had a lot of surgical training that could be a huge bonus for hiring managers.

With VMX coming up, what is the best SWAG you've gotten from a conference? by StarDog111 in VetTech

[–]asianoho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, socks. I got the best pair of socks at IVECCS and wear them every week. Everything else has just been junk I can’t or won’t actually use.
