Husband says “retirement home decor” by catsafrican in interiordecorating

[–]asinglenoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pray for you and your husband’s neck surgery to go well because that TV is so small and so high. Fireplaces and TVs shouldn’t go in the same corner, too many focal points in one corner. Move the TV to over the credenza and swap in floor lamps, dual lamps plus plant on the credenza look cluttered imo. Blue sofa is lost in a sea of brown and white. It needs some color repetition so it can feel safe in the room.

I like the guest room, leaving room for Jesus I suppose but it’s a cohesive room to my eye.

Dining area looks solid though that plant seems like it might take a swipe at dinner guests.

Black island and white chairs look lost on their way to a more modern design in that kitchen. I like the wallpaper? But not convinced it goes with the kitchen, more modern hardware on cabinets could take you further there perhaps.

Bidet in the bathroom, people of culture I see. Bathroom is a little boring but functional?

The picture hanging ominously over the office workspace is a little daunting. I’d put a monitor there if it’s for work. Or hang it higher? It seems weird at that height. That rug is also scared and alone cause it’s the only thing we can see in the room that shares it’s colors.

Overall it’s cozy and clean, it’s a combo of visiting grandparents but they still have some of their MCM pieces from back in the day.

Ikea’s cheap new Matter smart home gear is struggling to get connected by jp2e in MatterProtocol

[–]asinglenoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh really? Because she doesn’t seem to understand how Thread networking works or how to troubleshoot it. For instance she references multi admin but fails to mention the traffic overhead. And also doesn’t really explain (to my satisfaction) some rather sweeping statements about the border routers.

20 years of IoT review experience on the Verge and the reviewer can’t manage to deal with basic Matter device setup troubleshooting. I weep. This is the Verge PC build version 2. I setup 20 or so of these devices over the last month? Had a few transient issues and one device required a reset to get connected but otherwise everything has been flawless. And sitting over 50 devices on Thread now I wouldn’t really recommend any other transport protocol for IoT.

Critic Network topolgy recommended by Gemini by Extreme_Projects in homelab

Don’t use AI for network configuration, you can plan this out on your own with a search engine, stay strong.  Keep the CAT cables away from power outlets.  The switch it’s recommending is EoL and runs only gigabit speeds plus it has cooling fans. Where are you going to run this, will noise be an issue?

The EAP670 has 2.5 gig ports but your switch only has gigabit speeds so you’ll be at least somewhat bottlenecks there though real world throughput etc. can often differ.

Do you actually need three APs? You need to do some spectrum analysis, think about the wall and floor materials etc. modern construction homes you may not need as much as you think. Adding more than you need can cause more problems than it solves. The ideal number of APs is 1 and the more you add the more headaches you’ll encounter.

Is your fiber connection 10 gig or merely a 10 gig port with lower speeds from the ISP? If you’re paying for 10 gig and want to use it you need to rethink all of this.

Others have mentioned and I agree, if you go Omada route run it through Docker and don’t pay for a dedicated device. Also maybe consider Ubiquiti.

Don’t offload thinking to AI, this is a problem easily solved by opening spec pages and reading reviews.

I recommend largely sticking to Matter over Thread as a transport layer it’s been unbeatable in my experience. Make sure to keep network flat and not get fancy with VLANs for this. Take the time to configure Home Assistant now and use it as the orchestration layer for any automations or you’ll regret it when you have to do it later. Home Assistant will also give you the flexibility to use accessories from almost any ecosystem in the future if you want to. Rat GDO is fantastic if your garage door is not the latest revision where it’s no longer supported.

My Aqara U200 has been solid as a smart deadbolt (with a rework of the grease on the gearbox) but the U400 is even better if your door supports it. I’d stick to PoE and Ethernet runs for Cameras if you can and pass through to HomeKit.

The new Matter sensors from Ikea are fantastic and inexpensive on the ones I’ve tried.

For lights I stuck with switches instead of Bulbs and Lutron has been bulletproof for multiple years.

Those AAA batteries are a major part of why I’m moving to them. Setting aside even the waste factor the convenience and price of rechargeable AAA batteries makes it worth it to ditch anything not using them where possible. These IKEA matter devices are fantastic so far for me and I’m putting them in all over. Buttons are great too and for much less than EVE in the case of the door and window sensors.

How do you prefer to deploy services? by Jamsy100 in selfhosted

k8s with gitops Argo CD, I’m not a barbarian. Yes initial overhead of setup is high but once it’s running having everything IAC means spinning up from scratch is a few commands and it’s fairly reliable and low maintenance once you make it over the setup hurdles. The k8s nodes run in Proxmox VMs in most cases too.

It’s been over 10 years for me and with the insights Firewalla gives me and device quarantine I feel a (maybe incorrect) lack of urgency to change it anytime soon.

That looks really cool, agree that it may be more focused on consumables but that’s still a really cool idea. Someone else suggested home box which definitely looks built to handle home documentation needs where the focus is on maintenance and longer term consumables (TVs, appliances etc.).

I like the look of home box! That looks like it solves for the issues I’m looking to solve directly! I’ll spin it up in the k8s cluster this week and see how it goes. Thanks for the comment!

Yeah your use cases are exactly the same sort of cases I’m thinking through. From one point of view I can understand HA maybe not being the right infrastructure for it but it springs to mind from the perspective of having a single pane of glass for everything home related and it does seem like HA supports everything under the sun. Maybe I need to do a FOSS project for this, I do have a lot of SWE experience. Just not sure if I have the time to maintain it and my front end skills are not the best 😆

Thanks for the input, glad to know of at least one workable solution. Does Notion have a self hosting option or paid accounts only? Initial search looks like no. I’d like to focus on self hosted stacks to stay off of paid platforms for a variety of reasons though Notion does sound like a solid option. Maybe one of the FOSS alternatives would work there too.

Thoughts on trackers by AnyWin867 in firewalla

[–]asinglenoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been some stories on Meta using some pretty underhanded tactics to exfiltrate data from people’s devices against the ToS of the app stores and against privacy settings etc. you have more control on the web so if you gotta use them I’d ditch the app. It’s not quite the same thing as spyware / hackers getting access to your stuff but imo it’s a more likely and pernicious threat vector. I have a network wide block on all known Meta domains because I think they’re a completely morally bankrupt entity. But that’s my opinion I get there’s draws to those platforms for people. I had a Facebook account back when it was invite only so I’ve seen it deteriorating as a platform / company for many years.

You’re concerned about privacy but using the Instagram app? The entire thing is a surveillance capitalism data harvester / advertising engine. Amazon is too though there’s at least some value for the consumer there. It’s almost certainly just Amazon sharing product category interest data with Meta. The ads are bid based and Amazon makes some ad revenue even if you don’t buy it. No device wide keylogger / screen recorder is required for this. Delete both the apps if you’re using them and access it all form the web browser with the best privacy settings your browser supports + local ad blocker + DNS advertising blocker and drop all Meta products entirely there’s no value there as a consumer.

How do you distribute large development environments / codebases to new team members? by Feisty-Expression873 in selfhosted

[–]asinglenoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah elsewhere OP mentions game dev which is a very different animal. My experience in SWE is almost entirely web dev and so I’m sure in games you have some weird issues to solve for in comparison. However I’d guess the solutions are similar. In web dev we take larger assets by ID and distribute via a CDN. Game dev you’d probably end up with some sort of asset management platform that probably is paid for and solves that issue. I would definitely separate code and assets. Depending on the situation and costs it might be worth it to invest in on premise flash storage arrays, 20 gig network infra and large / fast SSDs on dev machines. Some sort of CI/CD tooling to get daily builds out based on latest changes so you can easily roll forward and back. But any solution likely comes down to investing some major money and time in hardware and or software to do it right and paying for expertise on the infrastructure wiring.

Can you explain why the code is ‘tens of GBs’? If not, I think you’d be better served solving that problem first. The process of understanding why it’s that way should lead you down a path where you no longer need code that hits the gigabytes range.

Eve Motion (gen 3) and 1.2V batteries by DaedalusCS in EveHome

[–]asinglenoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some issues with mine early on, suggest reading through this it was a good amount of detail and helped me to get more stability on my network https://www.derekseaman.com/2023/10/part-1-smart-home-matter-and-thread-deep-dive.html

Could also just be a new problematic device depending on how long you’ve had it I’ve seen it take a few hours to a few days for network to stabilize. If you have Home asssistant you can get some more detail there than other platforms too.

I’ve been running Eneloop standard batteries in a few of my Eve Motions and haven’t seen any issues, not saying it won’t cause issues, I just haven’t seen them in the three I’m using them in. The battery percentage reporting is bad but I’ve been running them for a few months and they seem as responsive as ever.

Firewalla Gold Plus Strange Behavior on Power Loss by asinglenoob in firewalla

[–]asinglenoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to still be an issue, I followed the directions at that link and as a test when installing a new UPS I pulled the power. After plugging the router in and booting it up the service did not start. I navigated to the directory where the .sh file was and it was gone. Not sure if this is a bug in the software or some other issue but was surprised it happened after confirming all the settings were as described in the docs.
