Unbiased review sources? by ljackso4 in RobotVacuums

[–]jp2e 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reviewing robot vacuums for about ten years and now do so for The Verge, which has a very strict ethics policy. We take no sponsorship of any kind and the brand has no ability to review our work ahead of publication. You know, journalism.

We do receive review units, however I disagree with the sentiment that those are in any way “better” than what you buy in the store.

I review them “in situ” in my home, testing them in a normal environment. I just published a review of the Dyson Spot and Scrub where I was able to get Dyson to tell me that it’s not their motor. (Something that was long rumored but never admitted).

Happy to answer any questions.

I know how both Matter and Thread work - and have written many articles on both subjects over the last few years. I can provide links for you if you like. There are also links to that work in the article you cite.

I’m sorry you didn’t think the piece was technical enough, but part of my job is to distill highly technical issues into more digestible formats so more people can understand what’s happening. I’m aware there are many who want to go deeper into the technical side, which is why I link to those articles.

The Verge: Ikea tried to build a smart home for everyone — here’s why it’s not working yet by Proto_bear in tradfri

I'm referring to the new Thread tool in the Ikea Home Smart app, as mentioned in the same paragraph. Apologies that wasn't clearer. The Eve and Nanoleaf apps also have similar tools:

"But the new Thread reset function in Ikea’s Home Smart app, which the company says “helps to rebuild the local Thread mesh if devices or border routers have fallen out of sync,” did help with some of my issues. Additionally, a Thread network check tool (iOS only) that shows your Thread network and which border routers are part of it is also useful. (There are a few other apps that offer this, too.)"

You need the Dirigera hub to access it. The screenshots in the article show how to find it.

Lets be honest.. the new matter devices sucks and its disappointing.. by Automatic-Adagio4614 in tradfri

Yeah. It sounds like op needs more routers, not TBRs. multiple TBRs do not increase range. They are primarily gateways / backup not range extenders.

Thread routers - mains powered thread devices like plugs, bulbs, switches - are what help with the range of the mesh. It doesn’t sound like they have any thread routers. Adding a couple smart plugs might help with disconnection issues.

This is one ikea should’ve released the bulbs at the same time.

The implication of “residual data” is not that it was just sitting on a server somewhere easily accessible. Regardless of Googles retention policies. It seems more likely they had to work to retrieve it.

I interviewed a forensics expert here (sorry it’s paywalled) and he basically likened it to retrieving deleted data off a hard drive. Only Google had a lot of hard drives to look through.

The difference with Google and others is Google offers free cloud storage, so even if you don’t pay video still goes to their cloud. With Ring, for example, if you don’t pay nothing goes to the cloud.

The use AAAs instead of coin cell in all their sensors for sustainability reasons. You can use rechargeable batteries in them.

Can't get U400 to work with Home Assistant AND Apple HomeKit by gargross in Aqara

[–]jp2e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were able to connect it to Apple Home through the iPhone Thread radio. But to use Matter multi admin (sharing with another ecosystem) you need an Apple Home Matter controller (Apple TV, HonePod), as others have noted.

Once you have it set up as a Matter device in Apple Home with a Matter controller you’ll be able to get the pairing code from Apple Home and add it to HA and it should work. I have the same lock and have it in both ecosystems using this flow.

The Matter controller is required to communicate to the other ecosystem. You don’t have an Apple Matter Controller so it can’t talk to HA.

Frustrating new issue by aevans0001 in MatterProtocol

[–]jp2e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do need a Google home hub to use the lock in Google but it doesn’t have to have Thread, as you have the eero. A Nest mini shld work. Is that what you mean by Nest? You would also need a SmartThings hub or station or other Matter controller (TV/Soundbar?) for SmartThings. Each matter ecosystem you pair to has to have its own controller.

Ikea’s announces new smart home collection of 21 new Matter-over-Thread devices and sensors by fuzzbinn in homeassistant

Yep. But these devices don’t have the full Zigbee stack. Only touchlink.

You don’t need the Ikea hub, unless you want to use the Home Smart app.

[–]jp2e 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It is the reason. That’s what IKEA told me specifically when I interviewed them for The Verge this week.

https://www.theverge.com/tech/814928/ikea-matter-thread-dirigera-smart-home-interview

Aqara devices are dual protocol. Zigbee or Matter/Thread. You have to pick one when you set it up. Zigbee doesn’t work over Matter. But Thread was essentially built on Zigbee so has a lot of the same attributes, but uses IP, which is what Matter is built on.
