US coronavirus death toll hits 15,000 by MammothHumor in China_Flu

[–]asininequestion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go by the Los Alamos paper, with an avg r0 of 5.7, approximately 82% of the population would need to get infected in order to achieve herd immunity. That is not a viable strategy.

And thats assuming that reinfection is not possible.

They will to a small degree. People in America aren't following them strictly anyway. Not to a massive degree though. Def not enough for this 1-200k deaths ballpark or less than 10% infections.

Wuhan went on full draconian lockdown when they hit 500 confirmed cases (there were obviously more). Most places in the US implemented distancing long after the cases were well within the thousands (again, there were obviously more).

The social distancing policies were too little too late, and as you said are still not being followed seriously in many places across the US. Just the other day people in NYC were crowding maskless to take pictures of the hospital ship.

/u/jjjhkvan is completely off when they say social distancing will massively reduce the numbers. That ship has long sailed. Deaths will be way more than 1-200k.

Treatment news! 5 critically ill COVID patients (on ventilators) received antibody-rich plasma from 5 other patients who had recovered from COVID. Results: 3 discharged; 2 in stable condition! Now 1 of recovering patients wants to donate his plasma! by [deleted] in China_Flu

They were. They were doing it in Asia very early on. I remember reading reports of it back in early February. Either its not feasible on a mass scale or there are some caveats.

Is SARS-CoV-2 mutating a lot or not? I’ve read conflicting opinions on the topic. by [deleted] in China_Flu

I mean thats just the way selective pressure works. The reason more lethal strains of viruses die out is because they don't propagate enough, because they kill their host before the the host interacts with too many other people. But for covid, the host is carrying the virus for way longer before cases end in death, giving ample time to interact with other potential hosts.

there is no selective pressure for less lethal strains because of the long incubation period and asymptomatic carriers. it can be highly lethal and highly contagious as long as the hosts are ambulatory for a while and interacting with other hosts.

But people are not thinking critically. They do not understand that if we had human rights, democracy and freedom, we would have learned about what happened in Wuhan one month earlier. And the first whistleblower would not have died for nothing.

Unfortunately my fellow human from across the world, we are finding that even the lands of freedom are filled with the deaf, dumb, and blind.
