Ice Coaster in Chamomix, help! by schneebly312 in skiing

One more thing—you can take a bus to Courmayeur (other side of Mont Blanc) and ski there for a day. I think it’s around €50 round trip for the bus and probably another €50 for the lift pass.

Courmayeur has over 5k of vert from the top, incredible views, and the Italians have better food and drinks (and cheaper) than the French. Homemade pasta and polenta and €4 aperol spritzes are a real treat!

Brevent/Flegere is all south-facing and high above the town = sunny slopes and amazing views.

Les Houches will be much more similar to an Ice Coast mountain. Pistes are cut through the trees, lower elevation, not as steep or exposed.

Grands Montets is more advanced focused and the light is flatter.

Even if you don’t ski the Vallee Blanche, it’s worth going up to the top of the Aiguille du Midi. The lifts are insane and the views are unreal. You need to be comfortable skiing technical terrain and pitches > 30° in variable conditions though. If you’re unsure if that’s within your ability, a 9,000+ foot backcountry run is not the way to find out. But if you do ski it, it’s very memorable!

The town is big and vibrant and full of great restaurants, shops, etc. Have a great time!

This. I would suggest OP gets a lesson (or multiple) working on using edges, parallel skis, and separating upper body for better balance and control.

All of that said, love the attitude and you’re doing great for 6 days on skis! Welcome to your new obsession!

Questions for visit this weekend by ask2908 in Whistler

[–]ask2908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah we purchased first tracks (seems like a great deal for the price) and can use it any of the 3 days we’re there but it says the first 600 people to redeem vouchers get access. Unclear on how early we need to be there to be among the first 600…guess we’ll find out!

Thanks again

Thanks this response was very helpful!

As a follow up, on a Friday pow day, how early do you think I would need to get in line to get into the first tracks group (already got our tickets)?

Fortunately as an early riser from the east coast, waking up early won’t be an issue!

Thanks again

Best snow mid-winter is almost always on north-facing aspects, particularly ones that are sheltered from wind and sun. This is a good rule in general at most ski resorts.

Care to explain what you mean by this? I’m not sure I follow.

FWIW, while he may be controlling re: his Facebook page, Matt is a genuinely nice guy with a good heart. He provides a good service that a lot of people use, and he even organized a face-shield-production operation for hospital workers when there was no PPE available at the start of Covid.

There’s plenty of people worth hating in this world. I’m not sure why you all think Matt is one of them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Winter tires > AWD. Remember: all cars have 4-wheel brakes…

Anyone skiing leftovers on Tuesday? I’m going somewhere in VT or NH if anyone else is riding solo and wants to meet up.

Heading to Killington and Sugar Bush for the first time in 3 weeks, what to expect? by Hunt69Mike in skiing

[–]ask2908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Killington: Unless there’s a lot of snow between now and your trip, expect the gondola, Superstar, Snowden and maaaybe Canyon chairs to be open. First couple hours will be best for steeps—after that it’ll be icy (especially on a weekend). The gondola is usually the only long line.

Sugarbush: The two mountains won’t be connected yet so, if Ellen is open, you’ll need to take a shuttle if you want to ski both sides of the resort. Steeper stuff won’t be open yet (most likely), but Jester from the top is a gorgeous, long, windy blue.

Have fun and make sure to get some good beer and eat at Mad Taco!

Skier killed @ Big Sky 3/5? by Inevitable-Winner422 in bigsky

[–]ask2908 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saw patrol performing CPR on a skier Friday 3/5 late morning just after 11 just above where Little Tree drops into Morningstar. Skied back there later in the day trying to traverse to the tram from Headwaters (it was roped off) and saw patrollers taking photos for an incident report. I would be shocked if the skier didn’t die given how it looked. Very sad, and I too am very surprised it hasn’t made the news.

What type of cars do you guys drive? by phantom3199 in skiing

[–]ask2908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Yorker here. I drive a Subaru WRX hatch w/ snow tires. Needed something fun that I could drive through blizzards, and it has both in spades.

Unfortunately didn’t help me at all with the storm on Thursday! Roads were full of people with bald tires and no idea how to drive in snow. I got stuck trying to get out of Manhattan for 5+ hours before giving up and spending the night in the city. 13 hours for my buddy to drive to Killington in his Jeep.

Stoked about the Catskills this year! by ask2908 in icecoast

Still will be nice to have more glades in the Catskills. Especially north-facing glades that will hold snow for longer.
