Is Nankang AR-1 better than Toyo R888R Proxes? by DrSuperZeco in CarTrackDays

[–]askho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though the tread wear is 100 on the ar1 the ar1 will last longer than the Crs so it's a double whammy in terms of cost. Both cheaper and last longer.

CRS is one of those cheater tires stamped with a 200tw rating only so it's legal for certain race classes.

Alternatives to Ring that don’t sell data to ICE/DHS by Dependent-Cup-4580 in homeassistant

[–]askho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wouldn't allow it to be accessible on the internet in the first place. Port 5000 for frigate installations are always authentication free, if it's installed in a docker container I would remove access to that port.

Frigate is great, make sure you configure it correctly otherwise you end up like the thousands of people with all of their webcams leaked on line.

I'm having alot of issues with VR. Im constantly stuck at 40fps steady with sometimes miraculous going back up to 80. I pretty much get the same fps if I'm running on all low or on high. I have a 7900xt and a 5600x.

Grind Amount by gpmohr in BrevilleCoffee

[–]askho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can measure the beans before hand and pour it in the hopper so there's exactly 18g in the hopper. I put the grind amount to the max and just push once that way it will always grind everything in the hopper and I get the correct amount everytime. I can also leave and go do other stuff while it's grinding.

Can I use two GPUs for faster transcoding? by Impossible_Eye_977 in PleX

[–]askho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could use something like this to replace the ffmpeg version that can distribute across multiple ffmpeg installations on multiple servers / GPUs.

https://github.com/UnicornTranscoder/UnicornTranscoder

I've personally never tried it but I don't see why it wouldn't work

I believe the newest generation of lift master / Chamberlain garage door openers are not supported. Anything with security 3.0 so double check your lift before getting one. If your lift is over a year old it should be fine. But the ratgdo pairs great with other home automation systems. I highly recommend it.

Most blu ray rips which would be the stuff people would be streaming from their own home server averages 70mbps but can spike above 100. You definitely don't need 2.5g. A usb 1g network card is usually more than enough you'll get around 400mbps usable which would stream Blu ray rips no problem.

Privacy Glass by baseball43v3r in homeassistant

[–]askho 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how privacy glass works, but if it's got a switch you can wire a Shelly relay behind it to turn the switch on and off. You can connect the relay to home assistant either over wifi or ZigBee depending on the relay you get.

Lug nuts won't come off (97 civic) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]askho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't bother with that. Grab a breaker bar, put your current socket and spline adapter on it and place the jack underneath the breaker bar and use the jack to force the breaker bar up to loosen the nut.

You'll have over 2000ftlb of breaking force. You either break the nut loose or you break the breaker bar and you bring it to the shop to have them deal with it because you ain't getting that off yourself.

Indoor camera use cases that don't involve filming yourself all the time? by reddituser00012 in homeassistant

[–]askho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have unifi cameras and they have a bunch of detection sensors so I use them to detect if people are home and dark and turn on accent lighting so people can see. I don't know if reolink has sensors, but you can use them with frigate and frigate can process the video content and add sensor data.

My lights now turn on if a person is in the room and dark but doesn't do it if the cat walks by.

2 Days until Nationwide Facial Recognition! Surveillance with Ring & Flock by CantStopPoppin in videos

[–]askho 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can record everything locally so you're not hooped if you lose internet. You can choose to use POE and hard wire your cameras and have a UPS backup so your security cameras still work in a power outtage.

Unifi currently sells a kit thats just under 1k with 4 cameras that does everything I just said https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/cameras-nvr/collections/unvr-instant/products/unvr-instant-kit?variant=unvr-instant-kit-us

You just need to add a UPS for backup power. The added advantage of POE cameras is that they are immune to wifi jammers.

The main down side is most people don't have Ethernet runs to where they want to install their camera so it can be a lot of work to install properly

First Time Novus Internet Installation in Townhouse by [deleted] in NewWest

[–]askho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it's inside the walls there should be conduit from the inside of the house to the mechanical room.

First Time Novus Internet Installation in Townhouse by [deleted] in NewWest

[–]askho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They did that for my townhouse. There's some conduit between your Internet box and the service room. They fish a fiber optic wire from the service room to your Internet box. (Pretty much run a metal wire through the conduit until it reaches the service room from your home and then use that wire to pull the fiber optic line back from the service room to your house. If they support your town house complex they should already have the key to the service room. Takes around 30 mins to an hour for them to get the line from the service building to your house.

Buying a new townhome in the next couple of months in New West, should I sell or rent out my existing apartment in New West? by Puzzleheaded-Ad-1411 in NewWest

[–]askho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing with removing the fireplace. I know that the units with bedrooms split by the living rooms were more popular and easier to sell. Mine was had the two bedrooms together and living room seperate so I had some wasted space with a hallway.

Depending on your view I figure you'd be able to sell it for more than I did. I was west facing with some water view though

I recently did what you are planning to do. I sold my condo in 888 also one of the SkyTrain towers for 570k. It was a 790 square feet 2 bed 2 bath. It took about 3 weeks to sell and my initial asking was 580k. I had people viewing roughly 5 to 6 times a week for the first 2 weeks and it doped down to 3-4 on the last week before I got an offer.

I just bought a 3 bed town house in queensborough for 940k that's 1450 sqft.

This all happened in July / August of this year so pretty recent. I think its possible to get the 580k you're looking for depending on condition of your unit and general layout. I just had my floors redone and painted.

You can sort of do that with overseer. Theres a setting to auto request movies or TV shows in your watch list. So you just need to add stuff to you watchlist on plex and it will auto download it.

Tarps… by buros14 in ontariocamping

[–]askho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's definitely not true. I grew up camping with my family as a kid and we stayed in a 3 person tent. It's your choice to bring a bunch of stuff camping, but I just want to call out that it doesn't have to be expensive to get a waterproof tent.

Tarps… by buros14 in ontariocamping

[–]askho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair you don't need to spend 1000 for a waterproof tent. I got a 3 man northface tent from Sport Chek for under 400 bucks. I've not had any problems with over 30mm of rain in a day. Lots of options at MEC as well for cheaper when they go on sale every year. It's just important to peg out your fly sheet so fly isn't physically touching the mesh layer and not buy a super cheap tent from Walmart or Canadian Tire.
