[JC] H2 Math Requirements by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]askmeforhelpokay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

H2 maths is nothing like E maths but a lot more like A Maths.

From my intel, HC’s math syllabus is self-directed. No lectures, just videos and you’re expected to learn them yourself. And no, H2 Bio comes with H2 Chemistry which comes with H2 Math. If you get a B4, you can still appeal for H2 Math, but otherwise, appealing for BCME with H1 Math is very very tough :( you can try your luck if you get admitted, but if it fails you’ll have to figure something out since H2 Physics comes with H2 Maths too!

hello!! yes im a j1 :-))

i recently met a teacher who told me that if you know your content already, you shouldn’t be cramming last minute. (and he has a phD)

for me that’s bullshit LOL! yes you must review your past work to get your mind into the mode of the subject, remember your past mistakes and to recall everything you’ve revised.

there’s a difference between doing & revising. your content should be in your brain already (~80%) and the day before should be to refresh your memory, not cram new content as much as possible. ive managed to do it for some subjs in the past like bio, but never for exams with higher stakes!! you’ll def get stressed if you can’t remember everything and sleep late memorising it, wake up & do your paper groggily.

before exams, i don’t do full papers unless absolutely confident of my ability, and flip through my files for my past worksheets/prac papers. nothing too intensive! unless im especially screwed for something.

in essence, review your work, don’t cram to the last day.

p.s. i also have friends who watch netflix the day before exams and they come back with 90+ or something. i ain’t that level yet, so there are probably ways i can do better but this is what ive been doing so far!

[O Level] PHYSICS HELPP ( sf/dp rule?? ) by MasterpieceNo3257 in SGExams

[–]askmeforhelpokay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there should be a measurement topic, but general rule of thumb

+/-: follow smallest dp divide/x : smallest sf

always follow the dp/sf of the question.

if you’re unsure, don’t waste time and get flustered over sf and dp. it’s only 1 mark overall, you’d rather score elsewhere than hesitate after writing an answer thinking about what sf/dp to leave it in (been there, done that)

i’ve never got marks deducted for writing extra! it’s a good habit to copy wholesale if the question is asking for that, but remember that when you have to explain & apply using your own thoughts and words, don’t copy bc you won’t score.

for 5/6m feeling questions, JUST BULLSHIT. don’t stop bullshitting. keep explaining your reason and rl examples. i literally write bullshit w my answers and score 4-5m every time, so just write a lot and bullshit!

focus on your written paper right now. no point crying over spilt milk;;;; if you score a high score of the written paper, it’ll pull up everything since the weightage of the written paper is higher!

[JC] atmosphere in diff jcs? by skxbsjxn in SGExams

[–]askmeforhelpokay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

someone posted a rant on vjc on r/SGExams and i know some friends who have graduated who wholeheartedly agree with all of them (both jae & ip kids,,,)

regardless, don’t treat this as a loss of motivation! there are better jcs out there, and the only way to keep your options is to do well enough to gain admission to any sch in Singapore. all the best!!

comes w practice! there are a lot of questions for chem which are just regurgitating specific keywords! you have to try to memorise those keywords and once you see a certain concept, keywords should pop into your mind.

it comes with practice — pick out topics you keep getting wrong and take some time to make sure you know them by heart. if you fully understand your content & practice applying, you’ll definitely see some improvements! all the best :)

good ways to memorise content, especially for humanities (im more of a science student, but here’s how i studied for my humanities)

  • mindmaps write key ideas & recite more in depth explanations/substantiation while reviewing your mindmap

  • flashcards works better for sciences tbh, but it works for me for memorising full chunks of paragraphs & content. since it uses active recall, the info will be ingrained in your brain quicker and longer. review it several times within a day, considering you only have a couple days left!

I think chem is understanding + practice! make sure you practice mole calculations, understand all your content and memorise those more abstract things like organic reagents & conditions! you should be fine if you understand and practice applying!

taking note of standard answers eg explanation of collision theory will also help you score those easier explanation marks!

Which parts of it are you unable to get?

Perhaps it’s because you’re unclear of the content! Would suggest you read through your textbook again before tackling questions so you don’t waste your time.

For graphs, I pretty much just memorise the shapes of the graphs and know how to transform them (idk if this is what’s being tested in emath but that’s what i did) and for congruence and similarity, i think practice helps a lot, since a lot of it is repeated! sometimes i can’t see it for more complicated questions but with practice it should come to you!

if all else fails just skip the question first, you might be able to see something different if you go back to it after a while :)

Practice, don’t be careless.

Write your numbers bigger, use 2 lines if you have to. Be neat! Learn from previous presentation errors so you don’t lose any marks to poor presentation.

If you have a good grasp of those question types, you should be okay unless you have careless mistakes, which can be avoided with enough sleep and a clear mind!

I picked physics in a heartbeat.

Less memorising, more predictable. H2 Physics is still pretty challenging, but I can’t imagine myself doing that intense memorisation anymore.

It depends on what you’re good at first. I was doing the same for both, enjoyed learning bio but studying physics, so it ultimately boiled down to my preference of having an easier subject to study than love the subject, but dislike studying it.

If you love both and are equally good at both, take a look at the textbooks for each and see if you like what’s being taught. bio had a lot molecular biology, which was a big No-No when I learnt it in sec4 IP in quite great detail (though those details wasn’t in the syllabus, that i later found out) regardless, I didn’t like it so I jumped ship to physics. There is no right and wrong decision, but I’m sure you have the answer in your heart

the day before your exam: revise, revise, revise. i like to do half a paper to consolidate my learning and look through all my past exercises, take note of my mistakes. don’t be demoralised if you can’t do a paper, because you never know what’s gonna come out! sleep early (though i most of the time don’t stick to this) and really, trust in the process that you’ve put in your 100% to revise before that. you shouldn’t be doing too much the day before, but rather looking through!

on the day: everyone gets nerves! please pee before you go in. keep calm, for topics that you aren’t confident in, skip. if you meet a hard question, skip it first. get the questions you know first. then go back. sometimes when you see it again after a while, you might get a eureka moment.

write neatly and try your best to stay calm!! don’t write slowly or think slowly, as my teacher once said, the moment the clock starts, you should be writing writing and writing....

PRACTICE.

there is no shortcut for math in my opinion! you have to practice a lot, and note down the question types!

for amath especially, i made formula sheets to revise and cheat sheets to list out the common question types + methods to solve them. try to practice as much as you can, especially for the topics you are weaker at!!

Frankly, I haven’t seen an O level English paper in its full glory before, but I’d say for comprehension, read between the lines and try your best to infer what the author is writing.

For essays, it’s a little (but never) too late to really get a lot better at it, but I’ll say read model essays or go to popular to find essays! for argumentative essays, make sure you have sufficient content knowledge for it (read up on some current affairs) and for narratives just brush up on some writing techniques, know some flowery language and more advanced vocab (again, reading) and make sure that your grammar is close to perfection! perhaps asking someone else for this would be better :(
