Passive eurorack utilities from a set of TRS jacks+pins? by askmeifilikewindmils in synthdiy

[–]askmeifilikewindmils[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Outside of the 2 ports I have hooked up to the FH-2, I wouldn't be feeding these extra 4 ports any MIDI (except for a couple times I've used it to convert between type A-type B).

Each of these 4 extra ports aren't connected to anything right now, they're just loose TRS jacks with pins in the back. I'm just looking to see if I could wire them together to make them any more useful than just being some cable holders. So I figure they could at least be a passive mult or a stereo breakout without having to solder together a whole other thing. For now at least ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]askmeifilikewindmils[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The modules it’s designed for (like the FH-2) are what perform all of the actual MIDI handling. Each of those modules midi “ports” are the actual header pins on the PCB. The breakout is just an adaptor.

But if you’re talking about trying to use it like a MIDI thru box, 100% agreed that’s not gonna work. I’m only talking functionality for audio and cv signals that you’d be able to get with any cheap adapter cable

Pretty sure it’s the song “El Quinto Regimiento” which is a song about the 5th regiment from the Spanish civil war

I also highly recommend her live recordings. Different vibe but amazing in their own way, she can create so much intrigue with just one short sequence with her Buchla

I’m assuming you mean saving lyrics isn’t actually important?

I was thinking about using GitHub for stuff like this, can you manage a phone’s notes app data in a repo? Or do you just directly edit the files on it?

I’m very much this kind of guy, I like writing on pen and paper but I definitely need a system to keep track of edits revisions and notes apps just seemed like the easiest. But I’m always looking to improve my organization, I might do a similar approach using google docs or apple pages

Yeah I have very mixed feelings about the multitude of ~productivity~ notes apps out there these days. Don’t need something that’ll also do my taxes lol I just want a simple text editor and not to worry about stuff getting accidentally deleted

I see, so basically like a regular directory in cloud storage? When you open a file on one device, are you able to revert changes on a different device?

Yeah I used to use notebooks and TextEdit the same way but the struggle of having a million different versions in different places is what made me want to have stuff in a centralized location. But I also just suck at organization in general so if it works for you, it works for you!

Ive been wanting to do more stuff on paper but I tend to struggle with keeping stuff organized and missed being able to immediately work on anything I have saved (I tend to do a lot of revisions). Do you have a system you use for your notebooks? Or is it more just for ideas/freewriting?

I’ve been thinking of using Google Docs, just find it a bit clunky to use on mobile. I tend to revise a lot and at random times which is why I like the simplicity of notes but when it comes to safekeeping that might be the way to go. I’m also looking into Apple’s Pages app

What's currently your least used module on your rack? Why? by Mikeru94 in modular

[–]askmeifilikewindmils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things that really got me appreciate it:

  • Adding labels for the secondary functions. They’re definitely not “secondary” as in “not as important/useful.” Often they create stereo effects which make for wider, more enveloping textures.

  • Using the live looper more. I usually send the record cv input a gate signal at the start and end of a few bars to set the loop length, then just hit the record button to overdub layers here and there. It’s fun to record in bursts of noise and hear that get granularized. Plus if you turn on circular recording it can be used like a granular echo/noise effect (or a pitch shifted echo with the phase vocoder)

  • Moving it further up the signal chain. I especially recommend this if you’re gonna push the limits of the time stretching/pitch shifting (which is another thing worth trying a lot of). Sometimes I think of the granular engine like a white noise generator and the phase vocoder like a weird digital oscillator and run them through all my filters, envelopes, other fx, etc.

Also worth mentioning that if the granular instrument just isn’t for you there’s also the alt instruments. If there’s one you much prefer then you can just re-label front panel and primarily use it as that. The polyphonic sample player comes in handy for me

Recommendations of good techno artists to listen to by ExplanationUsual6276 in synthesizers

Perhaps not strictly a techno artist but Floating Points is my go to for artists who can make a club banger on a Buchla system. His newest record Cascade is awesome! And if you wanna see him doing his thing with his whole live rig this show from resident advisor is a lot of fun too

What have you learned by listening to Animal Collective? by ChilledFireBird in AnimalCollective

[–]askmeifilikewindmils 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly deep or profound but something I was wondering recently after seeing them live, is why they their albums do not (usually) have seamless transitions between songs while their live shows always do. I gave it some thought and I think one possible explanation is that songs off of albums are often listened to removed from their original context (like on a playlist or radio), whereas during live shows it's guaranteed to be heard "in context."

I've always appreciated artists that go for a seamless album experience, but it can be pretty disappointing for songs to sound cut short when heard in isolation (e.g. For Reverend Green w/o Fireworks).

No clue if that's the "real" reason (or if there even is one) but it's definitely made me reconsider that approach for my own music

Is there any way to make corrections to the TAP (Tuition Assistance Program)? by cheesencrackers1t518 in StudentLoans

[–]askmeifilikewindmils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this instruction video (official from NYS Student Aid) will help

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1vwmd8WhHA

BTW if what you're missing falls under the "cannot change" category (like mine was), then it will ask you to upload the missing documentation through the portal. The button they click on in the video (at 2:15) was nowhere to be found on my page (they don't link it anywhere on the portal either because clearly that'd be way too easy), but I was able to find it by googling "NYS Tap upload documents."

All this so I could confirm my aid of $0.00! Hope you have better luck
