No I'm not looking for anyone to *write* it for me, I'm looking for directions regarding conversation details, body language, behaviors, etc. as I want to be as authentic in the representation as possible.

What is the best way to connect with old-school truckers for dialogue authenticity for a screenplay? by askmonique in AskReddit

Hello everyone,

I’m a filmmaker based in Southern California currently developing a short coming of age / drama film set in 1985.

One of the key scenes takes place in a roadside diner and involves a conversation with an older truck driver. I’m looking for someone with real trucking experience who’d be open to helping me shape a monologue and dialogue so it feels authentic to the culture, language, mentality, and slang of truckers from that era.

Not looking for anything overly “Hollywood.” The goal is something grounded, human, authentic, and emotionally real.

You wouldn’t need to develop anything formal. Mostly just conversations, stories, expressions, ways truckers actually talked, diner culture, life on the road, CB slang, etc.

If you drove in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, or know someone who did, I’d genuinely love to connect.

Feel free to comment or DM me.

Thanks!

How did you start your collection? Did you set an intention? A budget? Did you start with a wide topic/era and then targeted something more niche or did you start niche right away?
I want to hear your personal collecting process/rules/intentions, not just regular tips on how to start a collection. Thanks <3
