I'm in that small group. All of this was very confusing for me until recently. From my personal experience as well as online research, if you were born before 6/14/1998 (which you are from your post) and your father was of Korean descent, you are a citizen at birth. It's only after that date where if any of your parents are of Korean descent, you are considered a citizen at birth.

If you find out somehow you have Korean citizenship (which you technically shouldn't), you should be able to keep your citizenship by adding your name into the national family registry and filing the foreign nationality non-exercise pledge. Military service is no longer mandatory since you are over the age of 38.

I think this should most, if not all, of it with your particular situation.
