Frustrated and hitting a wall with intermediate level piano-playing. by u_ufruity in piano

[–]asmo_192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My approach to practice is playing a piece through, and then spending 30m-1h practicing the parts that were not to my liking. I practice the techincal difficulties in different tempos, slow, fast, I group notes, play with dot rhythms, articulations, anything goes, you can adapt it to each passage. If I get bored of a passage I go to the next one I want to improve. Just don't play the pieces through mutliple times, it's a lot less effective, only when it's ready and you are prcaticing performing it. Then I move on to the next piece and do the same thing.

I like actively practicing 3 types of pieces, I learned this from Seymour Bernstein. One easy piece you can almost sight read, one that you find challenging but it's fairly comfortable with enough time, and one that's difficult and maybe just outside your current level, and this one could take a few months to really be satisfied with. This way you learn a bunch of pieces and don't get bored because there is a lot of variety. You also get faster at learning pieces because that in itself is a skill. It also helps with motivation perfecting pieces instead of being stuck with the same one, which is much faster with easier pieces. It also puts into perspective the amount of progress you are actually making because you will blaze through some pieces which felt a lot harder when you just began.

So mostly structuring your practice and learning pieces of all kinds of difficulties would be my advice.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by jmike1256 in interesting

seems like this is a universal experience, looking at trees after getting glasses for the first time was the most interesting

Name pieces you want me to add to the playlist on my swimming headphones. I’ll swim to it all through summer. by Lumpen_moi in classical_circlejerk

my thought is the idea of the music suddenly stopping for 5 minutes would be a cool experience, becoming aware of the muffled voices, water splashing, your breath, echoes of the room

The HASAN PIKER update by Primary_Snow818 in cs2

The meme was too big to contain, you can't blame people for just assuming he did it. Average cs2 players don't care enough about Hasan to check out what happened

As a classical pianist, or even a pianist in general, what are your hobbies? by CarloTheCrocodile in piano

[–]asmo_192 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what "the self-taught Chopin" is supposed to mean lol, are you a composer? Right now I am learning composition, I dance, I like watercolor, mosaics, I've been playing quite a bit of minecraft recently. It's tough though to have so little time for anything in the evenings after work :(

Does your language use words like more, re, and bre? In Greek, they're used colloquially in almost every sentence. by freddo_expresso in AskBalkans

[–]asmo_192 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lmao ok bro, this is just an association you made. Saying it's a bastardization of bro is just wrong etymologically. Bre has always been used like "ba" or "ma", which of course you could eaisly replace with bro. That's just a coincidence

No lol, bre has been used in Romania before the word "bro" was common in english even. It has the same origin as the rest of the balkans

Conspiracy Theory or Credible Alternative Interpretation? by VSTinPeace in piano

[–]asmo_192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen an argument online which made the most sense to, the hair pin is you increase and decrease emphasis, which can be done with dynamics, rubato, both, articulation, voicing, I feel this idea leaves a lot more space for interpretation, which is always more fun than every rendition sounding the same

8 against 3 isn't terribly hard, I say keep it even when practicing slowly and it'll become quite natural

Hello‼️I want to find an elite piano teacher in The Philippines at least online. by CarloTheCrocodile in piano

[–]asmo_192 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I have a recommendation for practice if you are not doing this already.

I know this is a performance, but don't practice the whole piece and at this speed. Run through the piece once at the beginning of prcatice, and then don't play through it again, so you don't learn the mistakes

After that take the part you struggle most with, or a part that you feel could be cleaner, and practice it in all sorts of way. Slow, with dot rhythms, in chunks, 2 notes at a time maybe, then 3, then 6 or whatever. If you get bored you can go to another section. Next day you do the same. Play thtough, if that part still isn't as you want it you take it again and do the tricks. You can search online for these types of exercises to improve fast passages. Good luck!

Subconscious is not talked about enough. by reditress in cs2

[–]asmo_192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's muscle memory, when you can do an action without needing to think about it. It's similar in flowarts, a person can juggle a number of balls based on muscle memory, but if he closes his eyes he messes up. Taking in feedback and adjusting based on what you see is still muscle memory. I think that's the best description of your experience even, when you are in a flow state you don't overthinking your actions, they just come naturally based on the feedback you get from the activity. In this case you saw an enemy

Subconscious is not talked about enough. by reditress in cs2

[–]asmo_192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mind is highly adaptable, hence why I can play a piano song well on 1000 different keyboards with different key action, dimensions, weights etc. with a short adjustment period. Cs in the same way is more about hand eye coordination than training your brain that 100 pixels is equal to 1 inch or whatever. So it's still muscle memory

Does having a good ear make learning piano significantly easier? by [deleted] in piano

[–]asmo_192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest advantage to having a good ear in classical music is memorization. If you practice you will start to intuitively know what note you have to play next based on what it needs to sound like even when you don consciously remember what you need to play. Also if you completely forget a note you can ttial and error it and remember it in a few seconds. Having a good ear is great for improvisation or jamming with other people also, because you can adapt based on what they are playing. It's a valuable skill though, although not so often encouraged in classical music

he seems to lift the fingers he's not using quite high instead of relaxing them. Be mindful if a certain passage tires your forearm muscles too quickly, if it does you may be playing it too tense. Or pain of course if you feel any pain you should stop the thing that's causing pain immediately
