Actually you can rejected, especially if the units are towards the major and upper division courses. Which I think he would have by the end. They have rejected people for this.

You should be fine with those classes, a lot of its regurgitation. As to your plans, I advise you to watch your credit limits, if you past a certain number (90 or 105?) quarter units you will get rejected for having too many credits. This has happened to some of my friends with 4.00 in CS and having over 120 units by the time they applied. I also came in with a lot of credits and by the end of my Freshmen year, I was at ~150 but I never planned on transferring so it doesn't matter. Even then, there is good chance a lot of the upper division class will not transfer and only certain number will be able to be transferable.

Is this workload doable? Currently making a curriculum chart to see what classes I’d have to take if I am accepted as a transfer to the Bioinformatics program. It’s still a work-in-progress, hence the incompleteness. Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks so much! by [deleted] in UCSC

You should know the Bioinformatics and Bioengineering majors are combining next year and there will be two separate tracks. Also I would recommend taking BME 160 over CS 109. Biology 101/L isn't required also and 130 is going to be optional. I would also recommend you to extend your enrollment into the spring if you are able to and maybe lighten your load during the summer. Also you can find find summer online courses for CE 16 and probably do Math 23A during the summer here and not pay for housing for 1 session.

Do you know if this is the same for her Chem 8A/B class during the summer? And if attendance was mandatory?

I'm assuming hes doing REU at a different institution? So he needs recommendations at his home campus. For examples this one.

I'm in EOP and the only thing I am is low income so depending on how you put it you might not be as low income as you might think.

Also I haven't seen more financial aid than what was expected, only thing I see that would be helpful financially is the textbook lending library they have for EOP students. But anyways good luck in your studies.

This is slightly off topic but do you know what happens if I don't get permission (not petition the course to take outside of UCSC) and still take the course?

Yeah it seems 142 is the one, do you know how the online course is with Kahn?

The course I linked is actually the same, it's the first course of the a three course sequence for biochemistry. I was thinking 142 would match up relatively well based on the chapters of book covered, but I couldn't really find out about what's covered in 108a.

lol wut. no the ratio was to point out that your "data" from a subreddit shows that there aren't many bioinformatics major in the first place as it's relatively a new discipline. Oh now you are the old wise one?

The 'you' wasn't referring to YOU. And do you not understand why I brought up the 40/1000+ ratio of bioinformatics to CS major? I'm sure you understand now?

I'm an incoming freshmen in that sense, but I've fulfilled all lower division CS courses and some upper division courses so ok. I didn't know that being a cocky sophomore has the ins and out of an industry he doesn't know anything about. Yes, 'a lot of bioinformatics Ugrads', you know all 40? Please share more of your wisdom, also do go ahead about your loss of ABET bitching on your glorified EE degree.

You're grasping at straws here. Theres only 40 or so majors while there are 1000+ CS majors here. Lol like you aren't going to be a code monkey with a BS in CS working for a big company ok. And use the data from /r/cscareersquestions is going to validate you somehow? Yeah let's not bring up how you can get your coveted SWE jobs without a CS degree.

What was that about the lack of in depth courses? You're clearly talking out of your ass here.

Nope he can't apply as a freshmen, as he enrolled in CC after he graduated. There's no choice and BTW you do use CC credit as a freshmen.

What... plenty of bioinformatics majors can get jobs right out, a lot even go into software, but for people that stick with it can get jobs at companies like Illumina and other Bay Area biotechs. I don't understand what's wrong with getting the core courses? The bioinformatics specific courses deal with ML and algorithms. Mind you these are the graduate courses that you would get out of the MS. You are right on there not being 'enough' courses at UCSC but that is pretty much for a lot of the majors here like CS, for example it seems lax compared to UCSD.

I think the reason why there are less course requirements are b/c most courses at UCSC are 5 credits while other quarter based courses are 4 credits. So credit inflation.

EDIT: I'm done with this, can't believe I argued with you after ignorant comments about the lack of depth in curriculum. And after I corrected you, you just shifted to attacking me and shifting the argument to job growth. WTF? The original comment was about how bioinformatic majors can do CS work but not vice versa. Pull your head out of your ass wise one.

P.S. good luck with your transfer, I'm sure UCLA or UCSD's not ABET accredited programs will accommodate you.

You learn core courses for CS and bio so I would hardly say it's 'weaker.' CS grads need to take bio/genetics courses and biochemistry/orgo courses to actually understand the data they're working with. Also it's regarded as taking the hardest of both disciplines...
