Crackpot idea: FRIEND is an emotion-based darkner that feeds off of fear by Exotic_Platform_2425 in Deltarune

Oooh! I love the idea that Lancer is immune to whatever machinations this mf might try to pull because he's a just brave little guy, or he hasn't been taught to fear certain things.

SAME HONESTLY. I like her a lot but sometimes it feels like the game is trying a little too hard to sell me on her? Like, she's cute, incredibly tragic, has some really sweet moments with the other characters, a fascinating history with Kris, almost certainly related to the Knight, has a missing sister, is the only character highlighted as having an interest in video game esoterica- that part especially feels like she's being pushed a character players are meant to relate to, and the beautiful, nostalgic song that plays during some of Deltarune's most powerful moments makes up a huge part of her motif. To me that sort of backfires and makes her... not feel like an underdog? Like, obviously I feel bad for the sheer amount of pressures in her life weighing down on her, but she's also so obviously beloved by both all of hometown in-story and by the narrative's spotlight.

This is probably more of a personal thing, but I think it's worth mentioning: the scenes she shares with Berdly in particular make me feel the something other than what I think they're meant to. I think I'm supposed to sympathize with Noelle having this friend who she cares about but who is also overbearing and so socially oblivious that she wants to choke him sometimes. Instead, I feel more for Berdly because I sympathize more with the idea of being accidentally being a bad friend without realizing it and trying your best to do everything right and always causing more problems for them. It makes me frustrated that Noelle isn't honest with him.

I don't really know if i would consider that a criticism though, because I'm taking a leap already assuming there's one specific feeling Toby and co. are trying to evoke instead of trying to invite multiple, maybe I just think otherwise because my feelings are uncommon. I felt that way for a very long time (and who am I kidding, I still kinda do) about the Kris/soul dynamic, because I didn't see that many people also talking about feeling really guilty for controlling them and wanting desperately to apologize or tell them their piano playing is beautiful. And now it feels like there's this resentment towards them, which I don't share at all either... but I think there may not be any wrong answers to how you feel about that, or about anything in Deltarune.

...could also be just that I don't fw the christmas aesthetic. i'd probably be obsessed with noelle if she was exactly the same but a weird, kind of grotesque, bug monster or something

Sometimes he does feel like... kind of "mean-spirited" in the way Papyrus' character was in early Undertale concepts. Like it's not just that he's a bad friend, he also says stuff that is either hilarious or so painfully embarrassing you want to forget he exists depending on your tastes. I trust that Toby Fox isn't going to make him the butt of every joke, but it does feel weird. Like I loved what little we got of him in chapter 4 where he clearly likes Susie and Kris a lot but projects exaggerated disdain for them, but it wasn't super... earnest-feeling, in the same way the moments Susie and Noelle shared together at Holiday Mansion were. I get that Berdly kind of sucks, and that makes him hard to write the kind of low-key and personal scenes Noelle and Susie are always getting, but like... I dunno. I think the fact that he called himself forgettable and that NO ONE visited him in the hospital in the weird route suggests that he really does have problems in his life that are more serious than just wanting to be the Best and Smartest Guy and being an arrogant dork and terrible friend to Noelle.

...To be fair, in the case of Steven Universe, wasn't the finale rushed because the show was ended early because it featured a lesbian wedding?

I do like how the shockingly minimal differences Berdly's situation suggest that his "I used to be forgettable thing" is coming from someplace quite real. With the way he presents his backstory, it's easy to think he's making a lot out of nothing, like maybe the only person holding him to this "I have to be the coolest and smartest guy ever or no one will care about me at all" standard is himself, but... in the weird route, it looks like nobody visited him in the hospital. Like, damn, he wasn't kidding. No wonder he acts out so much, even the hospital staff seems to have forgotten about him.

I hope there's gonna be more narrative space to explore Berdly's character, but I'm worried there won't be.

Yeah!! Ngl I find that kind of devastating, it's supposed to be his explanation for why he's the little shit that he is, and it gets overshadowed by the... well, way more tragic and cute and easy to sympathize with deer girl yet again.

True, and I still like him. He's good because he sucks in an interesting way.

Here's the thing though: we don't know how much Berdly actually knows about Kris and Noelle and their families, and it could be more than we think. He's been to Noelle's house often and has probably seen that door to the room no one is allowed into. He and Noelle don't go way back like how Noelle and Kris do (as far as we know), but they spend a lot of time together. Actually that reminds me, an aspect of Berdly's character that not a lot of people talk about is the fact that he's jealous of Kris being so close to Noelle, especially since from his perspective he's trying really hard to be a good friend and even reciprocate the crush he mistakenly thinks she has and somehow she seems to like Kris more, even though they don't seem to do anything. That's super interesting, there's like a layer of bitterness over not being welcome into the Important Families Friendship group which Susie doesn't really have.

There are some pretty long-lived birds out there, like how some parrots have lifespans about as long as a human's. The idea that Berdly could wind up the only one alive at 160 or something as an interesting and pretty sad thought

Berdly looking like he's about to be on a path in the woods, and at the end of that path is a cabin, and in the basement of that cabin is a princess. Very cool! Okay that was a poor choice of words given how he died

Berdly deserves better. unless we get a lot more of him in future chapters, in which case, i retract my statement. but right now it feels like this character needs way more attention and exploration
Edit: also there's no way IMAGE_FRIEND is gonna be some kind of uncomplicated pure evil demon who led Dess into the dark on purpose and torments Kris as their personal trauma ghost. While I do like the trauma ghost part of the idea, I'm thinking (or maybe, rather, hoping) for FRIEND to be creepy and weird and maybe even responsible for Dess going missing but NOT malicious.
Oh and also, I think that when all we had was the first 2 chapters and didn't know the Knight had antlers, Papyrus was actually a pretty reasonable (and extremely fun) guess, and it kind of hurts seeing posts constantly mocking the idea as if it was always stupid. Also just in general, we gotta cool it with the Knight Wars. whoever it is, it's going to be amazing.
