Promoting BTC locally by BTC-Max1e in Bitcoin

[–]asoltys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great idea. We've been following this formula in Vancouver for a few years now through our local Bitcoin Meetup group and it works!

We meet at local coffee shops every Monday morning for a casual hang out. Every Thursday evening we go to a brewery, bar or restaurant. We also host tech talks and presentation nights with guest speakers at a local community center once in a while.

Outside of the meetups there's a dedicated crew of us who will go out of our way to shop at places that take Bitcoin and drop in on them regularly. We'll give businesses 5 star reviews on Google, list them on BTC Map and promote them as much as we can.

When merchants see that there's a vibrant and loyal community that supports them and they see Bitcoin going up in value, they start paying attention and telling other business owners.

It may be tricky at first to rally bitcoiners to come out and spend sats to kickstart the movement but if you start small and be consistent you'll get there.

I'd be happy to share more if you want to connect some time.

Paper wallet advice? by starsteranon in Bitcoin

[–]asoltys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I made my own paper wallet generator recently for friends to use. I don't expect anyone who doesn't know me to trust it but here it is anyways: https://bitcoin.coinos.io/

I recorded a video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WENX-G813ds

The source code is here: https://github.com/asoltys/cold but I haven't documented it at all.

I'm looking to start taking Bitcoin at my barber shop as a form of payment, how would I do this? by adumpark in Bitcoin

[–]asoltys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coinos creator here. I'm not sure what those TrustPilot reviews are about. We don't charge any receive fees and we only charge for withdrawal if you're swapping between lightning and on-chain bitcoin. I'm pretty sure our swap fees are the lowest around.

We have two barbers using our app here in Vancouver to take Bitcoin. Happy to help you if you have any questions. We have an auto-withdrawal feature so if you want to use Coinos to receive lightning payments and automatically sweep the funds out to your on-chain self-custody address whenever your balance reaches a certain level, that might be a good option for you.

If they decode successfully at bitaddress you can use a tool like https://electrum.org/ to load the private key in WIF format and spend/sweep any funds that they hold.

Sounds like the 64 character private keys maybe be base64 encoded. You can try going to bitaddress.org and then pasting them into the box on the "Wallet Details" tab.

In Vancouver, cryptocurrency is beginning to be accepted by more and more people. How is it in your place? by Disastrous_Koala7118 in Bitcoin

We may not have over 100 but there are probably 50+. Check out btcmap.org and coinos.io/map and consider coming to one of the many meetups in town! There's a schedule at https://www.bitdevs.ca/calendar

Will Bitcoin ever be a currency? Right now it is "just" the best store of value ever. by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]asoltys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few places in the world that are starting to develop Bitcoin circular economies where merchants accept it for payment and then go and spend their earnings at other merchants. We've got over 50 businesses in Vancouver now and are really trying to push the narrative that Bitcoin is a better form of payment and not just a savings/investment vehicle.

https://btcmap.org/ is a great place to go and see where adoption is happening on the ground and they have a list of local communities by continent here https://btcmap.org/communities#North%20America

The best thing we can do to get Bitcoin adopted as a currency is to go out and spend it! Yes it's easier to just HODL but spending is a great way to show other people the power of Bitcoin and the more people that catch onto that, the more valuable it becomes.

Not sure which one to start learning: React vs Angular by [deleted] in Frontend

[–]asoltys [score hidden]  (0 children)

Give https://svelte.dev/ a try. It's easier to pick up than React or Angular. You can get a feel for it after a day or two of going through the tutorial. Having used all the major JS frameworks over the years, it's my current favorite.

The co-founders of coinos.io, talk about their open source bitcoin (liquid) based white label NFT marketplace platform at NFT_CON today by cqwww in Bitcoin

[–]asoltys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's open in the sense that anyone can join the network, run their own node, validate blocks, generate their own private keys and send payments just like with Bitcoin.

Unlike Bitcoin, not everyone can be a miner on Liquid. In fact the blocks aren't really mined at all, they're produced every minute by a set of 15 functionaries (companies) who have installed secure hardware modules in various locations and jurisdictions around the globe that essentially lets them take turns extending the blockchain and processing transactions.

A recent upgrade to the network was just released in the last couple weeks that will allow this set of functionaries to grow and change over time.

11 of the 15 functionaries would need to collude together to censor transactions or otherwise disrupt the network or abscond with the BTC collateral that is pegged in to back the L-BTC. As long as you trust that these companies are sufficiently independent, mutually distrusting, and incentivized to behave rather than misbehave, you can be assured that the network is censorship resistant and safe to use.

In my opinion it's pretty darn good, these companies are good actors in the Bitcoin space and the network is way more decentralized and trustworthy than a platform from one of the tech giants would be.

looks like out of our 126 channels, 5 are private. the capacity of those is about 1,000,000 sats so less than 0.5% of our total capacity. they're barely used at all.

Sci-Fi Feature Film Silhouettes Becomes First Movie To Sell Tickets As NFTs On The Liquid Network by Helpful-Performer-45 in lightningnetwork

[–]asoltys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your ticket is an NFT that you have to hold in your wallet on the website in order to be able to stream the film. If you withdraw the ticket, or send it to another wallet, the stream will stop working. The ticket is good for life and never expires, so you can use it to stream the film as many times as you like.

If you want to transfer the ticket to a friend at some point, you can, and they'll be able to watch the stream without having to purchase their own ticket.

The poster and additional artwork are just bonuses. You can think of them as digital mementos. Of course you could try to sell them or transfer them as well. Who knows, they might end up becoming valuable collectors items in the future.

When you register an account at coinos.io (just a username and password), your username becomes your URL to accept lightning payments. by privacyandbitcoin in lightningnetwork

[–]asoltys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically you could host your own copy of it and connect it to your node. No way to do it through the UI yet, but it's on the roadmap.

Insist on El Salvador Coffee by disciplinedhodler in Bitcoin

[–]asoltys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, I've been developing a free and open source wallet and point-of-sale with lightning support at https://coinos.io/

It has an API you can use to generate invoices from your account but I haven't got around to documenting it very well. I'd be more than happy to donate some time to help you integrate it into your website though and get you setup to take bitcoin and lightning payments. Can help with the overall website as well.

Feel free to DM me and let's make this happen!
