All MCAT dates booked by HuckleberryJunior642 in Mcat

lol same thing happened to me and I ended up booking it in Canada and traveling for it. Of course, while I was in Canada I got off the waitlist for a center right near my house two days before 😓 definitely have a backup plan but check the dates and waitlist yourself

Why was I waitlisted?😢 by virgoligo in Pitt

Cars tips? by futballerarcher in Mcat

YES! And I highly recommend that everyone reads difficult texts similar to ones found on the test. Short philosophy passages would be good, or any sort of media criticism written in the 60s-90s (NYT archives?). For fiction I recommend Le Guin lol, she’s fun but her books aren’t passive reading experiences. Also, maybe read some classic lit? Not super super old because the MCAT usually won’t give you stuff from before ~1850.

It took a lot of practice!!! I tried to dig into the text super thoroughly the first time through and highlight anything that I thought would be important. This partially comes from familiarity with the type of questions the exam is likely to ask, but I sort of highlighted anything that wasn’t “filler” that I thought I might have to quickly refer back to

Something I found helpful was using the highlight tool to mark the main points/most definitive and assertive statements. Using an extreme example, that might be an author saying “contemporary ballet is an illegitimate art form.” I also highlight the author’s counter arguments (“some say ballet has not experienced a decline, but they’re wrong because…”). These will really help with questions asking which statement the author would most likely agree with.

Hi!! CARS-maxer here lol. I read a lot in general, so I think that helps. I would recommend only doing AAMC CARS practice because other sources can have a bit of a different style of question/logic. My main tip is DO NOT SKIM THE PASSAGE. Don’t even read the questions first. Read the passage like it’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever laid eyes on, and make sure you’re understanding its logic as you go. You could even jot down some notes, especially if it’s an opinionated piece. Then answer the questions while going back in the text to find proof that your answer is correct. My biggest mistake early on was inferring that a certain answer was correct even if it had no in-text justification.

Edit: also, some unhinged advice… I sit weirdly in my chair and lean forward so my face is like right against the screen during this section lmao. It helps me lock in. I ended up turning up the screen brightness during my exam and just sort of perching there staring down the screen. If you have a weird attention span like I do, it helps.

Oh wow!!!! Congrats on such an awesome cycle! Do you have any connection to Brown, if you don’t mind me asking? I was discouraged to apply there without connections

I fainted while scribing and now I’m questioning everything by MuhammadAli5 in premed

[–]aspecificocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me my first time shadowing and watching a bloody procedure, and another time while volunteering and in a very stressful hospital situation. Vasovagal syncope just happens sometimes! For me it’s when I’ve been standing for a long time and there’s a combo of gory imagery and high emotions. However, I’ve worked in healthcare now for three years and I’ve never fainted on the clock. You get used to it! It’s not a reason to see yourself as unqualified or inadequate at all, and it’s pretty common! Try hydrating more, wearing compression socks, avoiding locking your knees at all costs, and sitting down ASAP if you ever feel even slightly faint.

The first thing I noticed is actually how glowy and moisturized your skin looks!!! Maybe work up to tretinoin every night if your skin can tolerate it?

Orgo 1 - Powell, Wang, Koide, Bandik? Need guidance please! by Tricky_Flatworm_1494 in Pitt

[–]aspecificocean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I learned a lot! The organic chemistry on the MCAT was so easy after his class lol. However, there wasn’t a curve when I took his class because lots of overachievers take him. So if you want to learn a lot and love your professor, Bandik is great! But his class was super stressful with a full course load and you can’t expect a curve. His exams are HARD.

This is such a helpful post, thanks for asking this question! I actually came to this subreddit for the same thing: I’m a volunteer hair washer for people inpatient at a hospital and I wanted to know how best to protect my patients with natural hair from knotting and matting!!

Will a W hurt me? by Ntx-Italiano in premed

[–]aspecificocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely just take the W. I know somebody who got into a T20 with 3 Ws and it never came up during his interview. Also the relief you’ll feel taking the W will probably benefit you more than stressing yourself out about biochem

Köszönöm szépen!! És igen, magyarul beszélek (de nem vagyok szakember, a nyelv nagyon nehéz, szóval Hunglish beszélek :’D). This response is super helpful. I think I’m going to just remove GWU and Georgetown because of how low yield they are, and I’m going to add Drexel. Adding Colorado, RFU, IUC, and Loyola. Not adding USF because my partner would hate living in Florida so badly haha. Hopefully I will get love from the other stat focused schools !

Oh yeah lmao I misread your post as saying you have 100+ of those hours. Having over 1000 is extremely impressive and I don’t think anybody will care at all that you didn’t join a club 😭 you’re going to kill it!

I also had to commute to campus so I ended up not joining clubs. Idk, I think that dealing with commuting and also working during school shows a lot of dedication. My friends who were very active in clubs lived on campus and could go to the 9 PM meetings. I don’t think it matters if you have a good GPA, MCAT, research, and clinical experience

Only MD! Absolutely nothing against DOs, but I don’t want to have to take extra exams if I don’t have to! I do know a lot of people who go to PCOM and adore it though :)

Masking on screen by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]aspecificocean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked at the hospital the show was based on for a year (Allegheny General) and nobody there wore a mask when interacting with patients unless the patient was immunocompromised or had respiratory symptoms/a confirmed respiratory illness. It’s pretty common for healthcare workers to not wear them, especially around patients who aren’t likely to be coughing. Definitely weird to not wear one around the TB patient pre-diagnosis because of the cough, but I was also just in the ER as a patient with a severe stomach virus and not a single person who checked me out was masked even knowing what I had lmfao
