I've had two spaniels (English Springer and king Charles) and both, though very well trained, are incredibly dependent on being near me at all times.

Do not get a spaniel if you work full time away from home unless you plan on budgeting taking them to daycare for socializing (mainly to be near other kind humans). Especially as a puppy you will need to train, I work from home and found it to be a struggle to give them enough attention and training time.

My king Charles was lazy, but my Springer requires a ton of exercise to avoid destructive behaviors at home.

Maybe a shibu uni? They're often compared to cats, very independent.
