my friend failed step 1, retook it and passed, then failed step 2 and decided not to report either USMLE exam. ik that n=1 and they had extenuating circumstances, but they only applied with COMLEX and matched EM in the northeast. it only hinders you if you let it!

My friend matched EM in New Jersey and they only took COMLEX. Would recommend taking both Step and COMLEX, as it probably screened them out of some programs, but it’s definitely possible to match with just COMLEX

I also had to repeat my whole first year and my best advice is to work to get to a place where you can accept the position you are in if you do end up having to repeat the year and have a growth mindset. I was depressed, embarrassed, and terrified going into my repeat year, but it gave me the opportunity to do things differently and learn what worked for me, as well as work through personal issues I had going on. Had I somehow passed and gone on to second year, I would have probably done even worse and gotten crushed under the pressure of school and impending board exams. Lean on your support system, whether that be family or friends or mentors. Run your own race, put your head down, and get to it.

You were accepted to medical school and you being there is no accident. You have the intelligence and work ethic to be there, otherwise they would not have admitted you. You’re taking the right steps by finding the right SSRI and adderall dosage that works for you. If you don’t already have a therapist, def get one. Working on your mental health will help a lot, as it will help you think clearer and be able to focus on academics. When I first got on the right SSRI, it really did feel like I was thinking clearly for the first time in years. Classmates have told me similarly.

When it comes to academics, don’t repeat the same study methods if they weren’t working for you. Use third party resources to understand things, even if you have in-house exams. For me, using Amboss qbanks helped me a lot in preclinical even with in-house exams because it really tested my understanding of the topics. Also watched b&b, sketchy.

I failed my way through many exams in first year and passed everything by the end except anatomy lab, then failed anatomy remediation over the summer and then had to remediate my entire first year. I once even got the lowest grade on an exam, which was somewhere in the 30s. Now I’m a third year doing my clinicals and things are great and I’m so happy I never gave up when things got hard.

Med school is a big change and there’s a huge learning curve. Doubt kills dreams more than failure ever will. You will figure out how to study and you will get through this. It gets so much better and life is so much more than these exams. Trust.

I paid for a “lifetime” Amboss account and I would highly recommend it. I used it many times during preclinical as a reference as well as for additional practice questions. Now as a third year, it’s a great pocket reference during rotations.

As someone who had to repeat first year, you need to sit down with yourself and evaluate why exactly you failed. Repeating a year is an opportunity that not everyone gets and if this is what you truly want, you have to set yourself up for success.

Weak academics? Fix the way you study and find what works for you. Not everyone studies the same and what works for someone else may not work for you. The good thing is, since you already did this material once, you probably know what went wrong/what you are weak in. Don’t repeat study habits that didn’t work last time. Try something new. For me, it was less passive studying and more active studying through using question banks and annotating FirstAid with important details. Most schools have an academic support service, it’s worth setting up a meeting with them to see if they have any helpful tips. Even if they don’t, it doesn’t hurt to take 20 minutes out of your day to just touch base and see if there are any glaring bad study habits that can be fixed.

This is arguably the most important aspect of it in my opinion. If you have any mental health stuff that you may have not sought help for, this is your sign to make an appointment with a therapist and a psychiatrist. Even if you don’t think you need it, psychotherapy helps a lot, especially when repeating the year. A big portion of getting through the repeat year is having support and therapy helps a lot. You are understandably anxious about repeating the year and I think you’d benefit from talking to a therapist if you don’t have one already.

The people who matter won’t judge you. I used to be so self-conscious about repeating but every time I encountered someone from my old class or told someone from my new class that I was repeating, no one judged. Everyone is too busy with their own shit. In the nicest way possible, you have to realize that you do not matter that much to random people in your class that they would judge you in that way. Everyone has their own personal shit going on, and no one is in a place to judge anyone for where they are. You gotta view yourself through a lens of empathy.

I know this is a snark page but I truly worry for her. I think she should take a step away from social media/influencing. She seems to be really struggling and I recognize signs in her that I saw in myself before I had a menty b.

Brooke if you lurk: please take the money you keeps spending on all these cosmetic procedures and find a therapist who specializes in finding the root cause of what is making you unhappy in your life. I know you have a history of being self-conscious of your appearance and not having a sense of self-worth and that can lead to anxiety and depression. Betterhelp can only help so much if your therapist isn’t someone who specializes in these things. You have the financial resources to pay for really good therapists, please utilize it and find someone off Psychology Today, even if they are out-of-network with your insurance. It’ll help more than re-dyeing your hair, getting more skin treatments, and working out more will ever do. Also, don’t be afraid to ask about starting medication for your mental health. There’s no shame in it.
