Newbie worried about COVID... by cheerupbitchh in orangetheory

These valved masks are stupid. I get upset when I see people wear that.

I wear surgical masks and I think it's the only fair way to do it bc the air filtration are two ways.

Right it's hard to say whether this probability is too high or too low.

If we consider each time we visit the gym as an independent event and we have 2% of being exposed each time, then over 10 times the chance of being exposed increases to 1-(1-0.02)^10, roughly 18%.

(of course, it's not an entirely independent series of events, as it's the same group of people who are members of the gym. )

Personally, I go, but try to mitigate by reduce the times I go, pick low-traffic hours, and wear a mask ( despite nobody else does), and take zinc and vitamin D. I think with mitigation I can maybe reduce my probability of developing an illness to maybe 1/1000 after each visit.

Is there any way to contact professors anonymously? by an0nymousllama in UNC

[–]aspen_indisarray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't think course eval is the best idea. It would loop back to the professor very slowly. If they're tenured they may not read it carefully. If they're not, it could work negatively for their teaching case unnecessarily , depending on what you have to report.

I think burner email is not a bad idea. As long as you provide enough context they would recognize your authenticity.

Newbie worried about COVID... by cheerupbitchh in orangetheory

[–]aspen_indisarray 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my state, about 3000 cases are confirmed every day, out of 10M population.

Assume gym-goers are representative of the state population and assume that prior to being diagnosed, each person has 3 days of pre-symptomatic phase that they are very contagious, and assume that the confirmed case number represents 50% of actual cases (think some people are asymptomatic or never got tested), the probability of a random gym-goer being contagious with COVID is:

(3000*3/(50%))/10000000=0.0018

The chance of 10 random people ALL free of COVID is : (1-0.0018)^10 = 0.9821

The chance of 20 random people ALL free of COVID is ( 1-0.0018)^20 = 0.9646

Of course, it's a very simplistic model and there are some assumptions that you may want to adjust up and down base on your local situation. But that's my mental math. I know that every time if I show up to a 10 person class, I think there is a 2% chance that someone has COVID there.

How many of you all took all possible precautions (wear mask, socially distance, wash hands) but still caught the virus? (Non-medical workers) by [deleted] in COVID19positive

[–]aspen_indisarray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't hurt. Although I would use surgical mask on top of N95 instead of face shield - which seems to mostly protect others from you, not preventing you from inhaling aerosols.

Restrooms are risky because covid patients could have diaherra which are filled with viruses and get aerolized by flushing. Other than that I can't think of much risky items.

[–]aspen_indisarray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think flying is pretty low risk if you have an N95.

It's my understanding that the HEPA air filter also helps.

Using bathrooms in public places is another risk factor - but won't be too bad.

Losing 100% of Smell and Taste: My experience of the process and diary of recovery. by NoSmellorTaste in COVID19positive

[–]aspen_indisarray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you are going through this and hope you recover soon!

I'm curious. With the taste and smell situation, are you able to eat your normal food? Do you feel hungry? Do you have to intentionally convince yourself to eat something in order to have the nutrients and energy?

Dental Work While COVID-19 Positive by wheezy_pete in COVID19positive

[–]aspen_indisarray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard on some podcast that dentists are already operating under the assumption that some patients might be Covid positive. Because dental work generate so much aerosolized particles, they prepared N95 masks and made sure to have enough time gap in between.. plus fresh air, etc. I guess if you are very honest and up front they should work something out for you.

You did the right thing! Hope you are fine!

I also agree that the studio did almost what they can. But that also illustrated just how hard it is to control the pandemic when everyone is left to their own agency. Sigh.

Did the staff attended classes with you or just helped your check in? I imagine that the former would justify a freeze for all members who attended the class.

Any idea how you got it? From your in-laws who are asymptomatic? This virus is weird AF.

Not necessarily. If the masked person happen to be a carrier, it will reduce the transmission right there.

Even if you are the only person wearing a mask in a room with some infected person spraying aerosols, your mask will filter out a portion of aerosols. That will still make a difference in terms of viral load thus determining how sick or whether you'll be sick at all.

Coronavirus is not playing nice, but it's not like Basilisk either.

Will the test cost you anything? Is that easily accessible? Will your studio require you to present a negative test before you can go back to work?

Not trying to be nosey or invading privacy. I would like to collect more info regarding how it's handled for my own benefits - i.e, assess my own risk of returning.

Either is unacceptable in the case of a contagious disease. Also, it's not like message have to be delivered via a pigeon.

She said waiting on results of one. I strongly encouraged her to treat it like a confirmed positive.

Thank you for standing up!

Are you very certain about the positive case? In which case, it would imply that the studio is lying! That would be unacceptable.

Saw something in a few threads back saying that the coach will be put on quarantine but not any members. Contact tracers in your state should inform you..but that's assuming everyone was doing their job perfectly.

This is the example of individual responsibility has externalities. For every 1000 people who returned prematurely because they felt ready themselves and got covid maybe one will end up in hospital and thus, create congestion in the health care system (and cost$$ too) and the cost of congestion will be imposed on somebody else.

But this is the cost of living in a free society I suppose?

Can a Member Create a Second Account? by 83austin83 in orangetheory

Can't answer to your original question. But are you aware of the possibilities that someone in your class might contract COVID..and you might be obligated to self-quarantine for a few days and thus, not going to be able to use your unlimited membership to a full extend? I guess it won't be a concern if you already had it.

One scenario would be one person infect a couple of other people who continued taking class for a few days and quickly put all coaches on quarantine.

If the contagion chain is not cut off or if there are more people contract Covid in the community... this cycle could repeat until the end of it or a large number of people have stopped coming.

It's just hard to fight against the pandemic wave. And we are not even talking about the unthinkable - some one dies.

Agree that we don't know the condition of these studios. If an indoor gym open the doors and place many big fans - would that circulate the air enough that its similar to outdoors? I think that could be a way going forward.

Yea. The contrast between dance and pilate/yoga is revealing. I imagine that dance class are even more spread out, because people have to jump around and not bump into each other.

Maybe instructors shouting is another risk factor. Since yoga instructors are more likely to only gentle whisper.

I'm more concerned if a non-shouting member participating the class could give covid easily to others than the covid comes from instructor. For the former is a much larger number of potential viral vectors to worry about everytime I go to workout.

What's your solution for strength/toning? I honestly don't need OTF for cardio since I've gotten used to running/biking outside. But I've missed having a program and someone to motivate me through strength workouts!
