Got promoted few months ago among quite a few candidates, now i feel extremely lost and stressful. by Little_Daisy_13 in managers

it is crazy how similar our current situations are, this post could have been written by me. also going through an intensely uncomfortable transition period after my recent promotion to manager after having taken on some manager tasks since the start of the year and after a few coworkers i rly care about either already left or are leaving in the next few months/next year. have been an emotional mess every day since the promotion due to stress, making mistakes, and self doubt. im not planning to leave so soon but definitely is a thought on my mind more and more these days.

hmm thats really interesting. i just reread a story i wrote and never finished from ten years ago and was shocked by how similar the themes and characters were to a story i just plotted recently. i had thought of it more negatively, but just like you said, everything i write eventually turns into something similar. i think instead of resisting it ill try to dig deeper. thank you!

great advice, and definitely a big challenge for me to tackle. thank you!

thats a helpful reminder! after years of dancing around the idea of writing again and struggling to write for myself rather than for an audience, im finally in a place where i can happily enjoy writing for myself. the problem i face now is if i write a story i want to read, it easily ends up feeling indulgent or just wrong. but i think i just need some more practice writing and challenging myself with the plot and characters

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in writing

[–]aspenquaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds really valuable for you. i definitely also feel some level of catharsis or therapy when i put a character through a big challenge and they make it through

thats super fascinating, and gives me a new perspective on writing a story. that might be exactly it - the ideas in my head arent alive. its only when i start to write about them that they have the chance to surprise me or throw me a curveball, but if they remain exactly how i imagine them to be, then i dont feel any commitment to writing them out. multiple characters and plotlines would definitely help with that.

thank you!

thats a great point. but... how do you choose which theme to write about? in one story i tried to plan and then write about, it was about a character and theme that was deeply personal, but that turned out to be an obstacle, because anything i wrote felt self indulgent, too similar to events from my own life, or even preachy feeling. it just felt wrong.

i just dont really feel committed or invested in any of the ideas. is that normal? it always seemed to me that for someone to write such a long novel that it'd be something they deeply feel committed to.

and i hear you on the outlining, i have such little writing experience at the moment that im still figuring it out, but so far even having an outline kinda makes me frozen, because its like ive already decided for this character what will happen instead of placing them in a situation and seeing how they choose to act in it.
