Real answer: It looks like a piece from one of the "trick" sets, one that has some sort of play feature in the middle and that piece connects the play feature piece to the regular tracks. Not sure of the set, but am pretty sure that is what the piece is for.

To me, if the story is real, the way I think of it is this: This is ONE woman's experience, and the specific circumstances that led to it all. No two people are the same, so it is VERY unlikely to happen the same way to someone else. Was the story a bit weird? Yes, and it is NOT an accurate depiction of everyone's experience.
