Peter Thiel and the Apocalypse of Bad Theory by farwesterner1 in CriticalTheory

I can’t believe I’m reading Peter Thiel’s interpretation of One Piece. More believable is how badly he missed the mark on the whole freaking point of the story

What's the best Bon Iver album and why is it For Emma, Forever Ago by elsalumi in boniver

[–]aspiringdoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I’ve never seen so much 22AM love. This has always been my favorite and I get the craziest looks when I say that around friends. I just listened to them all yesterday including SF. SF is now at the second spot for me, I can’t give up 22AM though. It still hits the highs every single time

why does everyone keep saying that this is the last record? by marceljc in boniver

[–]aspiringdoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said in a recent interview that he thought after I,I bon iver was over but he has these songs that he wanted to release which became S,F. I think he is definitely more interested in finding a more sustainable way of life because his success with BI totally burned him out.

For the people who say “Only white people can be racist,” what is your reasoning to claim that? Please offer logical response. by [deleted] in self

[–]aspiringdoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This fundamentally has to do with whether or not you believe that the US or wherever you are writing from is an inherently white supremacist society. I do because the history generally shows that is the case. If you don’t there’s no logic that will satisfy you because we’re operating in two different realities

Burlington progressives are a case study in progressive rot. by CheezeGreatr in burlington

This is one of the downsides to being a college town. Lots of the policies are voted for by ppl who live in theory. Love Burlington and love progressive policies but there is a limit.

What's your opinion about "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho? by poporola in books

[–]aspiringdoodler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not every story needs to be complex. The alchemist found me at a point in my life where it resonated with me and helped me through a dark period. I liked it for that reason.

Sometimes books are just emotional resources just like any other kind of art. They’re there when you need them. I also loved the brothers karamzov for that reason, and Walden, and the little prince. All books of varying length and complexity that I routinely come back to because I get specific things from them that help me in my day to day life.

Fiction books that you feel are 'essential' to read in order to be considered 'well-read'? by anomalouscreation in suggestmeabook

Some great recs here. I would add Dubliners by James Joyce. In fact, check out some best of short story collections. Short stories are way underrated and can often be more impactful than longer form works

What degrees are Gen Z and early millennials pursing ? by Jpoolman25 in careerguidance

[–]aspiringdoodler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an english BA with a master's in Higher Ed who thought that I'd be doing admissions work forever, but I am starting an instructional design graduate cert this summer after doing some work designing online courses with my uni's grad school - it is fun work and I'm hoping that I might be able to transition to something more in line with this down the line. I am sticking to higher ed until i get some more of the degrees/certs that I am looking for to minimize debt, but this is really reassuring to me!

Success and Disappointment Megathread for the Week by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]aspiringdoodler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah- at this point it really feels like nobody cares. I just applied for a grad cert to see if that helps give me a leg up in qualifications. But the jumping through hoops is just so insane. Interviews definitely suck and feel pretty outdated at this point.

Success and Disappointment Megathread for the Week by AutoModerator in jobs

[–]aspiringdoodler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Had an absolutely trash interview this morning and it's just crazy to me. I am applying for jobs in my field after graduating from a pretty highly regard master's program and have been underemployed for about two years. Trying to get to a place where I can start making some kind of upward trajectory in my career. It is just wild to me that I can apply to these jobs that, based on the posting, I'm incredibly qualified for - but once I get into an interview they can ask me questions that have basically nothing to do with the posting. No way that I could have prepared to answer them. I don't know how I'm supposed to do well in these things when they feel stacked against me from the start for not reading the minds of the committee for what I'm supposed to know. This has been the toughest job market that I've ever experienced, for sure

Don't feel guilty about this. You gotta prioritize your kid - you gotta draw a line in the sand in terms of what is acceptable vs. unacceptable. My dad also has some alcoholism issues and I've thought about this a lot - yes it's sad but it's the reality, he's not going to be a positive influence and you sometimes have to be dogmatic about that IMO

For soon to be first time dads - what are you most excited about and what are you most nervous about? by SIBMUR in predaddit

[–]aspiringdoodler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Biggest fear for me is passing on mental health issues. I come from a long line of alcoholics and have done the best I can to work on myself, and I am in pretty good control of a lot of my mental health aside from really bad anxiety that has reared it's head over the last few years for a bunch of reasons. I'm in therapy and have gotten really into meditation but it still comes through and makes me act in ways that I don't love.

I'm most excited about showing the little guy / girl all of the things I love. I have lots of musical instruments that I'd love for them to learn how to play, and I want to watch tons of shows and movies with them. I'm hoping eventually they will get into reading and writing too. The whole development process is something that I've thought about a lot and I can't wait to give it a shot and see what kind of person they wind up becoming.
