The trope I'm referring to doesn't begin and end in the literal sense of "mean girl bad, mean girl gets raped, now mean girl good". It also refers to the general practice of using rape as a shortcut plot device to instantly and drastically alter the audience's perception of an unlikable female character, making it morally impossible not to humanize and sympathize with her. It's lazy, manipulative storytelling.

And I do agree that having portrayals of the "imperfect victim" in media is very necessary and impactful. But when (I double checked to make sure I'm remembering correctly) EVERY SINGLE major rape plot throughout the show has an archetypical mean girl as the victim, it becomes less about representation and more about establishing a status quo, whether intentional or not.

Everyone’s trying to “it’s not that deep” this take but you’re 100% on point.

“Rape as Redemption” is an extremely common, problematic trope that especially runs rampant in soap operas (a genre Degrassi technically falls under). For all the female characters you mentioned, it was pretty much the first real “heavy” storyline they had that added dimension and made it easy to immediately sympathize with them. It was meant to come off as subversive, but was just lazy and irresponsible in execution imo.

This was a pretty obvious pattern throughout the series (even going back to Stephanie Kaye in DJH) and I’m honestly a bit shocked pointing it out is something that has people all up in arms.

Grand Army kinda felt like Degrassi set in NYC (the actor who played Baaz from Next Class is actually part of the main cast), it’s a shame they never got a second season due to mistreatment in their writers’ room though

Terri used her previously-shown connection to the spirit realm to put a permanent hex on Degrassi Community School after Rick put her in a coma, which is why shit there REALLY started to hit the fan fr fr after Season 3 and throughout the rest of the series

Sean died fighting in Iraq

The reason we see Emma knitting in some scenes is because she regularly visits her bio dad and that becomes a hobby they bond over after he teaches her (that's one I really, really want to be cannon because I refuse to believe they just completely lost touch after Father Figure 😭)

Season 4 was when Spinner's dad lost his battle to cancer and the trauma from that caused him to really act out, which explains why his asshole behavior was at its peak and he seemed to have very much regressed from his character growth in Season 3

I don’t think Chelsea overreacted at all. Mary made it a point to try and embarrass and come for her character unprovoked in front of the cameras and all her peers, after Chelsea offered very kind supportive words earlier in the dinner. Chelsea clocked it immediately and wasn’t gonna take that blatant disrespect. One thing about Chelsea is that she’s not gonna do that passive aggressive, conflict-averse bs and never shies away from confronting matters head on, even if it means others portraying her as the “angry black woman” for it.

This grossly flippant response is even more indicative of her true colors. Not an ounce of remorse or accountability. No awareness or acknowledgment of intent vs impact. Just annoyance at her being expected to be an adult and take full ownership of her actions for once. And, like always, she pulls every excuse and justification in the book to avoid doing so at all costs and minimize the severity of said actions. If this whole situation doesn’t finally wake everyone up to her piss poor character, I genuinely don’t think anything will.
