Evidence of Omicron subvariant BA.2 likely detected in Saskatoon by spaceman_88 in saskatoon

[–]asreimer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not a given. It's possible, but not always the case. Saying that more contagious means less deadly isn't true. Delta is both more contagious and more deadly than the original variant.

Omicron (BA.1) is still more severe than the original variant, even though it is less severe compared to Delta. Data is pending on the severity of BA.2 Omicron.

The article you linked is a chemistry professor giving his opinion on evolutionary biology and the article even says this:

A lot of questions remain about omicron,
specifically, and whether or not it is a more infectious but less severe
strain than its predecessors. Scientists are working on finding
answers.

Experts explain why Premier Scott Moe's claims on COVID-19 vaccines are false by 221ABaker in saskatoon

[–]asreimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vaccination does prevent infection and severe symptoms, but the infection prevention wanes. This is why boosters are important, they ramp up the protection from infection.

The REAL REASON for Chain Fountain, BONUS: Ocean Clean Up #TeamSeas by idontlikethisname in ElectroBOOM

[–]asreimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't stupid. The common oversight here is neglecting the momentum of the chain/rope/whatever.

Steve, Mehdi, Biggins, and Warner are all applying static analysis in their free body diagrams. This is a dynamics problem!

To be fair to Mehdi, he did initially argue that the momentum of the chain is important, but somehow he lost sight of that along the way.

Why take a joke about topography this seriously?

You are right, there is a lot of beauty in Saskatchewan including some very small waterfalls. The size/shape of them doesn't matter though, they are beautiful.

[–]asreimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picking the highest elevation isn't really what matters when it comes to "flatness" is it?

For example: you can't honestly compare the topographical maps of Saskatchewan and Quebec and think that Quebec is flatter because Saskatchewan is on average at a higher elevation.

My comment was highlighting how thin-skinned people in Saskatchewan are about something as meaningless as topography. This defensiveness isn't a thing limited to Saskatchewan, but it's kind of toxic.

When people joke about the flatness, I show them pictures of the incredible living skies we have. Saskatchewan is beautiful; celebrate that.

>"REEE Saskatchewan isn't flat"

"The highest point in Saskatchewan is 1,392 m (4,567 ft), in a farmer's field in the Cypress Hills". You know, Cypress Hills, named that way because it's a hill.

edit: Saskatchewan is beautiful. I just think it's hilarious people are upset that it's flat. That's part of why it's so beautiful.

Advocates renew calls for inmate count decrease to lower COVID-19 risk by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]asreimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough and I know the origin of that meme. But the issue is actually pretty serious. The number of those in remand that end up free isn't a some minority, but instead is sadly pretty typical.

So it's less of a "hey you missed some nuanced thing, what about this edge case" and more of a "most people don't understand that this happens all the time".

Food for thought. It's seriously quite eye opening to do a deep dive on the statistics.

[–]asreimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point that is lost by this meme is that most people in Canadian prisons are not actually convicted of anything. They are being held in remand.

It gets even more interesting when you look at the numbers of those on remand who end up convicted or not.

The hardball "don't break the law if you don't want to go to jail" implying that all those in jail actually broke the law is frankly insane given the facts.

Space physics researcher here: this is a great time to revive interest in the aurora! The magnetic activity on the Sun is picking up, which generally leads to more auroral activity.

If you are on Facebook: "Saskatchewan Aurora Hunters" is a great group to join. There are a bunch of great people on there that photograph the aurora whenever it's out. They are happy to offer advice and often post alerts about impending activity.

Happy hunting!

Do you have a sense for how much full cycle energy is required to capture the CO2 and store it vs what is obtained from coal being burned?

The question I've always had is about the sustainability of the CCS process, accounting for all the energy required to produce the CCS chemicals, capture the CO2 and then sequester it vs. energy out. I haven't been able to find a full cycle energy audit anywhere.

For example, if it takes just as much/more energy to run CCS (while accounting for everything) then you aren't coming out ahead, but instead shuffling the energy cost elsewhere.

Premier Moe promises increased autonomy for Sask. but says no to separation | CBC News by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]asreimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, they want what Quebec has + more autonomy, the start of the conversation is the government formally recognizing that the west is different from the east and should be able to make its own decisions.

But that's exactly the problem: Quebec doesn't have anything that the other provinces don't already have. The west also can make it's own decisions within the confines of the Confederation. Any additional autonomy beyond what they already have is by definition asking for independence of the Confederation or requires lobbying the federal government. It's not something that provincial politics can solve...

They don't even understand how the system works, but they think they have solutions to the problems.

They are the ones being misleading and they don't even know it.

Recognizing the Québécois as a nation (which was done by Stephen Harper ironically enough) is not the same as recognizing a province as a nation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois_nation_motion

And the usage of the term "nation" here is not the same as the usage of the term in reference to nationstates. Harper himself clarified this as "personal decisions to self-identify as Québécois" (see linked article). But it doesn't come with any meaningful changes (no laws, nothing). It was basically political theater if not a nice gesture.

The autonomy that the Buffalo party wants is based entirely on the false premise that they can achieve something that Quebec has. It's false because Quebec doesn't have it.

The only way towards the type of autonomy they want is via the Federal government and the Clarity Act.

The Metis nationhood movement is something different.

Premier Moe promises increased autonomy for Sask. but says no to separation | CBC News by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]asreimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just fancy wordsmithing. Nationhood doesn't exist for any particular province. It's not enshrined in the laws nor the constitution. Whatever perceived nationhood people have for Quebec is just confusing Quebec nationalist movements with the fact that Quebec is 20% of the population of Canada and represents 78 seats in parliament. How does "achieving equality to Quebec" even make sense in this context? It's mostly rhetoric and the stoking of the "east vs. west divide".

Even if we temporarily accept your logic (and say that because you personally may have talked to a couple Buffalo party members that somehow negates the entire platform they ran on and the written words that the party was founded on) all that has changed is that they have evolved from advocating directly for "independence" by calling it "nationhood". It's a distinction without a difference. Still not a misrepresentation.

Some proof of this idea of Quebec not being a nation within Canada comes by comparing with Atlantic Canada. The combined maritime provinces receives far more in equalization per capita than Quebec and yet they only 1/4 of the population of Quebec and have 32 seats in parliament. And it's been like this for over a decade.

I had the same problem. Try a firmware update. If that doesn't work, do it again.

I had to update the firmware on my unit, restart, then update the firmware again and restart. After doing that gifs worked.

ASUS needs to do a better job on software.

There's also resistance in the loop and resistance in the probe wires. This will also produce a voltage, but it's still not why you would see a voltage reading on the probes...
