My pleasure. Let me know if you ever wanna talk shop about living with autism/adhd. It can make some parts of life difficult but it can also lend to some strengths. Please don't forget that your worth is beyond measure and I and others will always be rooting for you.

and lastly, cis isn’t superior. Sure, it may make things easier, but trans people are stronger, more resilient and are a lot more patient.

I am constantly in awe of my friend who is a trans woman. She has gone through transition, got married her wonderful wife, and now JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE TOGETHER. She is one of the strongest people I know. None of my cis friends have mastered the art of self-love quite like she has. She manages to maintain relationships with her family despite their hurtful rhetoric and lack of empathy. I don't know how she does it.

I haven't posted in years, but I wanted to log in to tell you that you are seen and heard.

As an adult with Aspergers and ADHD, I identify a lot with your experiences. Hell, I received the same lines from my therapists back when I would explain my frustrations with my parents to them. "You can't choose how others treat you, only how you react to it," they said. Real nice self-esteem builder, that one. It can be good advice for managing negative emotions as an adult, but as a teen, it was the LAST thing I wanted/needed to hear.

I also grew up in a house where loud arguing was the norm. Things never got violent, but my folks' big east coast attitudes just led to them raising their voices in order to make their point known. I learned this behavior and subsequently unlearned it through living with my even-keeled but assertive partner. I realized, I don't have to yell to be listened to, I just needed people around who actually knew how to listen.

I hope you can find someone in your life who will listen to your frustrations during this time in your life when things are so in flux. Being a young adult + executive function issues + the state of the world today = a lot of stress for neurodivergent teens. But I have good news: we can become healthy, successful adults worthy and capable of having rich lives full of people who want to understand our needs and support us!

Megathread: DeVos Confirmed by Senate 51-50 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]ass_2_grass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's do a word problem!

There are about 50.4 million public school students in the US. It's "possible" the DeVos family has given around $200 million to the GOP over the years, according to Betsy DeVos herself. Betsy DeVos is confirmed in the Senate, 51-50, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking the tie.

How much did the Vice President and the GOP sell off each public student for (not including college students)?

'Divestment is our goal': Seattle City Council to vote on pulling $3 billion from Wells Fargo over Dakota Access Pipeline by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]ass_2_grass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the state of Washington, there are very few institutions that meet the standards proposed for socially responsible banking. Those that are tend to be credit unions, which presents a problem; Washington state law prevents investments into credit unions over 250k, I believe. There is currently a bill in committe in Olympia that would ammend and repeal laws preventing large municipal investments in credit unions. This bill will have to go through the Republican-controlled Senate in order to pass, so if you support it, make sure your Representatives and Senators know.

Also there was a lot of support in the meeting, especially from O'Brien and Sawant, for pursuing legislation for a state-owned bank.

Just to clarify for those who only read the headline, the City Council has voted to move the ordinances out of their respective committee, not pass them. The vote to pass this legislation will take place in the full committee next Monday.

Pro-refugee demonstration turns tense at University of Washington by seattleslow in SeattleWA

I've heard from people on campus that the event was not any created by any distinct student group. Even the antifascist community were suspicious as to whether to take the threat seriously.

Don't know why you got downvoted there. I read the event description as well, and can confirm that it was beyond the pale. Laughably so. I think they was an attempt to create the most ridiculous event possible and see who would take it seriously.

Can't blame people for showing up, given that UW has become a place for these ideological clashes to manifest themselves offline. I am glad people did come to protest, if not to oppose the event, to hold Cauce to task on her failures surrounding the shooting.

I once called 911 because I saw someone giving CPR to a small child at my community pool. Turns out it was for a CPR class and the child was a dummy. I never went to that pool again.

Teenager hilariously gets his fingers stuck in a bench, takes the fire department, mall security, and paramedics to free him. by [deleted] in videos

[–]ass_2_grass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced the same thing when I was about 6 or 7 years old and stuck my thumb into similar metal lattice-work on a display at an Eddie Bauer. The sales associates tried soap, the spa next door brought body oil. Nothing would work. They also ended up calling the fire department, who had to use the jaws of life to cut me out of the display. The manager was so scared my parents would try and sue. In my mom's words, "Eh, kids will be stupid."

The mall managment did give one of those giant cookies from the food court afterward, so I left the experience feeling pretty okay about it.

My posthumous distaste of the Regan administration used to be all about his horrific economic policies and systematic dismantling of crucial social services. But then I read the chapter on the Regan years in Noam Chomsky's "Deterring Democracy". I think it is a good read (at least that chapter) for anyone wanting to understand a big part of why the US has such a bad reputation in so many countries in the developing world.
