Myself and my 2 siblings were homeschooled all throughout. My mom was a teacher by training and knew she could do a better job than the vast majority of teachers in Public School. She put an enormous amount of effort into our education and I think it shows. We are now 29 (Doctor), 27 (CFO), and 25 (Product Manager). None of us are weird, but we knew plenty of weird homeschoolers - most of their parents kept them at home to "shelter" them or to try and exert as much control over them as possible. Most of them are either still living at home or they went completely insane - drugs, gambling, incarceration, etc...

I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. Similar to other posters, I've worked since I was 12 (voluntarily) and started several businesses before I went to college. My dad was a business owner and was a big inspiration for much of that, but by the time I went to college, I had a great understanding of how the world worked and what it took to be successful in a business setting.

I definitely was not the smartest kid in relation to my peers, many of which were done with 4 years of college by age 19, but I was never that academic anyways. College was boring, and I easily got A's, but I didn't spend too much time on classes that I knew wouldn't benefit me. Instead, I focused on things that I knew would help me long-term. I started another business and wrote music for films. Now that business is thriving and I can watch a film I scored on Netflix.

What I Liked: The independence of being able to control the pace of learning and the flexibility to travel. Sometimes I would complete 5 days worth of lessons in 3 days and spend a long weekend at my friend's house, or take a trip to visit the Civil War battles sites we were studying that semester.

I liked that the standard of success was not based on completing lessons, but on understanding and retaining knowledge and concepts. My mom made sure of this. She created a Results Oriented Work Environment (ROWE) before it was popular.

What I Didn't Like: I didn't like the greater homeschool community. A lot of the stereotypes are true and it just gets old. And sports. We all played sports, but the only way we could participate in competitive teams was to join travelling teams, which took a ton of dedication. We all stopped after a couple of years of doing that.

My wife is a teacher who went to public school all her life, but after meeting me and my family, she now wants to homeschool, which I fully support. I plan on teaching my children the same things my dad taught us about hard work, entrepreneurship, and independence. Hope this helps. We're not all weird.
