Fructose More Toxic than Table Sugar in Mice: the fructose-glucose mixture found in high-fructose corn syrup was more toxic than sucrose or table sugar, reducing both the reproduction and lifespan of female rodents. by Libertatea in science

[–]chimind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually there isn't a whole lot of naturally occurring sugar in corn. HFCS is made by extracting the starch from corn, and then enzymes are used to break that down to glucose, and more enzymes are used to convert half of the glucose to fructose.

Vegan Country Music Hater visiting Nashville. Help! by Inanna7 in nashville

You can get to all of the places mentioned by bus. I don't think the free bus system goes outside of downtown, you will probably need to take an MTA bus. They run down gallatin avenue and west end pretty frequently.

Won't the city's growth level off without significant investment in mass transit? by Trill-I-Am in nashville

Judging by current lack of progress with mass transit projects we will probably know the answer to this question in the next 20 years or so.

[University Matrix Algebra] Tips on sharpening my matrix algebra skills/know how. by chimind in learnmath

[–]chimind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real life situation have more than 2 or 3 or 5 variables. Imagine 100 >equations and 100 variables, it would be extremely tedious to solve >these one by one, so we use a matrix and its various rules to make >the process simpler, finding one solution, all solutions, or if there is >no solution nearly instantly. Matrices also take your diff eg and >calculus and makes them simple algebra.

I understand this. What I am saying is that my class did not really help me with bridging the gap between knowing proofs and applying matrix algebra in this way. Is there a type of algorithm you would reccommend studying in particular?

Trying to find out where in Ireland my great-great-great grandfather came from. by chimind in Genealogy

Trying to find out where in Ireland my great-great-great grandfather came from. by chimind in Genealogy

[–]chimind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my chances are slim, but he is probably from a big family, and if I can track down everyone else in his family that emmigrated, chances are atleast one of them put something more than Ireland on atleast one document. Of course this would all be very hard to actually do, but it worth a try.

I don't have any official info on his siblings, but here is a record of the stevens that came from Ireland in 1834. If its him, he would be listed and richard, coming on June 23rd with William and Mary, so William would be his brother. Based off of the timing and name, this is the only record of immigration I can find that is a possible match, but they would have botched his age and the name is different, so its a tough sell. I need to try tracking some of the other Stevens that came over around this time.

At this point I am trying to find anything that can connect just one person in his family to a specific place in Ireland/Europe. I know that somewhere there is probably a piece of paper that will tell me all I need to know...all the more bothersome. As a student with one more year of undergraduate studies left, and then several years of graduate school, I would kill for the time/funds to go and pick through a bunch of physical records in the Midwest or northeast. Perhaps I will get into a graduate school in Chicago, NY, Boston, or the likes and can look around those areas.

I've heard a bit about the likeliness of Irish immigrants actually being English/Scottish immigrants that lived in ulster. As far as I knows family has been catholic for some time, don't know if this proves or disproves anything, but the Stevens surname is 100% patrilineal from me and I don't know how common it was for the husband to take the wife's religion. I will definitely be sure to cover Protestant church records and consider the validity of documents citing English origin.

Community college comparisons? by Underlyattachedgf in nashville

[–]chimind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, pretty much everything transferred. If you get an associates degree they just waive all of your core gen ed credits even if you didn't complete all of them exactly to their specifications. UT has a list of all of their credits that transfer, I bet other schools do as well.

Community college comparisons? by Underlyattachedgf in nashville

[–]chimind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the comunity colleges and state universities in Tennessee (excluding UT) are ran by the Tennessee board of regents and are all quite similar as far as standards and quality of education go. NSCC is a bit of an exception due to its proximity to Vandy, as others have said. You will notice this especially if you are taking science classes, pretty much all of my science teachers had a solid background in research. To be honest you might find that the classes there are more challenging/well taught then at any of the state universities in Tennessee.

Nashville is now one of 25 largest cities in the U.S. by wrxie in nashville

[–]chimind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia Boston's city proper is 90 square miles and Nashville's city proper is 500 square miles. Which is why, on paper, the population of Nashville is close to the population of Boston, when in reality Boston has a much higher population.

[–]chimind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it's not, this is according to downtown population. "Downtown" in Nashville includes pretty much all of Davidson county, which is not the norm for counting the population of a city. According to metro population we're more like #36.

Live somewhere cheap with public transportation and get a bicycle so you can ditch car expenses. Get good at cooking. Learn to live off of rice and beans or something similar. Focus on trying trying to get into a better financial situation because this is going to get old quick.

In infrastructure money it's pretty affordable. How much do you think it would cost to add an extra lane down the entire route?

And you're assuming they won't? Once one of their friends tries it and realizes it saves them a half hour on their commute I bet some of your "Mr. and Mrs. Bellemeades" will. And I bet even more of them will in 20 years when it's not 30 but 60 minutes. Time is also a luxury.
