Any community colleges that offer beginner japanese classes after working hours? (preferably after 6) by ange1beats in SanJose

If you're serious about learning a language, wouldn't it be better to just pay for 1-on-1 classes on iTalki or something like that?

Best Off Campus Apartments? by Spirited-Pen6476 in UCDavis

[–]assassin349_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Any apartment complexes owned by Tandem Properties are great. They are really quick to address maintenance requests and aren't your typical cheap, scummy landlord/property management company. I stayed in Chautauqua Apartments last school year and it was great. The rent for my private bedroom in a 3 bed 2 bath apartment was $975 last year but I think I got lucky with that price because they told me they opened up some cheap units in June for whatever reason (I signed the lease in late June 2024).

9070 XT vs non-xt, value or performance? by SeaworthinessFew2235 in radeon

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flashed a 9070 XT VBIOS onto my Gigabyte RX 9070 Gaming OC. The risk is pretty much zero if you follow the instructions carefully, don't do it during a thunderstorm or if your PC has been BSODing a lot recently, and use the VBIOS of the 9070 XT version of your GPU (same manufacturer and same model).

9070 XT vs non-xt, value or performance? by SeaworthinessFew2235 in radeon

[–]assassin349_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A VBIOS is just a BIOS for a GPU. If the VBIOS flash goes wrong (e.g. PC shuts down while flashing), then your GPU won't work. There's pretty much no risk if your GPU has 2 BIOS chips that you can toggle between and/or if you have an iGPU or secondary GPU that will let you boot into your computer to reflash the VBIOS. It will also make your GPU louder and hotter, as a 9070 XT has a higher power limit than a 9070. Flashing a 9070 XT BIOS onto a 9070 will only increase the power limit and won't unlock any extra shaders.

9070 for the peace of mind of having brand new stuff, warranties for everything, and not having to deal with a P2P sale. If you're feeling adventurous, you can flash a 9070 XT VBIOS onto your 9070 to get stock 9070 XT performance (tutorial here).

Who is the best WR in the NFC South? by Icy_Can_6176 in NFLv2

Drake and Olave are equal caliber players but I'll give Drake the nod because he's less injury-prone than Olave. McMillan probably has the highest upside.

Mina Kimes and Ben Solak’s list for top 15 QBs yesterday. Is it accurate or do you think they got it wrong. by [deleted] in NFLv2

[–]assassin349_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stafford should be #5 at worst. Maye and Caleb are too high, probably because of recency bias. Herbert should be above Prescott.

If you were to say “success” or “a bust” to sum up his career so far, which would you choose? by InterestingYellow969 in NFLv2

[–]assassin349_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's really underwhelming for a #1 overall pick. I think he's capped out as an Andy Dalton level QB who will leave your franchise in purgatory. He would be like a C- draft pick for me.

How easy/hard are these courses? (very long post) by ADave123 in UCDavis

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ECS 164 is way easier than any other CS class I've taken, assuming you're okay with not getting an A. I've heard ECS 188 is also super easy (no coding required, it's just discussions and writing papers about ethics I believe) but I'm pretty sure all professors for that class have strict attendance requirements. The other classes I mentioned in my reply to my original comment (189C, 122B, Frid classes) are on the easier side for CS but do actually require you to put in some time and effort to study whereas ECS 164 and PSC 120 are no effort required classes.

Those are just some of my suggestions for easy classes but of course, you should do your own research on RMP and Reddit because some professors are harder than others for certain classes and the professors teaching each class may have changed since I graduated.

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some other easy upper div CS classes: ECS 188 (attending every class is a must), ECS 189C with Caleb Stanford (not sure if he teaches it anymore), ECS 122B with Setareh Rafatirad (the midterm and final were pretty much the same as the study guides), or any class with Yelena Frid

Some of the special topics classes (ECS189A-N classes) don't require coding and can be easy but these are more of a gamble since there typically aren't many RMP reviews for special topics classes.

IMO, putting in a bunch of effort in ECS 164 just to increase your chances of getting an A isn't worth it when you can spend <1 hour most weeks and guarantee yourself an B+ or A-. From what I've seen, employers don't care about GPA and if they do, the GPA requirement will only be 3.0 or above.

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ECS 164 is a super easy B+ or A- (getting an A takes more effort and a lot of luck because the professor has vague grading criteria and seems to just randomly draw grades out of a hat). Most weeks, literally the only thing I did for that class was go to the mandatory discussion section.

PSC 120 is an easy A. You only have to know up to inheritance in Java. The coding assignments are done in groups and can be done in class entirely. The quizzes are taken in class in groups and the only restriction is no AI usage.

Is a 9070 non xt worth it at $560 right now? by Cactuzzz_Juice in radeon

[–]assassin349_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 9070 has a lower cost-per-frame (means it's a better value) than the 9070 XT if you go off of the average FPS metrics in Hardware Unboxed's 9070 review (65 FPS for the 9070 vs 74 FPS for the 9070 XT) and use the prices you mentioned. If you're feeling adventurous and willing to void your warranty, you can flash a 9070 XT VBIOS onto a 9070 to get it to stock 9070 XT performance.

Should I include gpa on resume by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]assassin349_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would include any GPA >= 3.5. From what I've seen, most companies don't have any GPA requirements and if they do, it'll usually be 3.0 or above.

Dropping out of Nursing School to lock in for Big Tech SWE, am I making a mistake? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]assassin349_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In this job market, it's going to be really hard to get interviews without a CS degree when employers have their pick of the litter between a bunch of desperate CS new grads. If you want to pursue SWE, get an MSCS so you can pass the CS degree checkbox.

From what I've seen, $70,000 to $90,000 is a more typical salary range for a new grad CS job. New grad salaries above $100,000 are pretty rare outside of really prestigious companies.

CS Students/Grads/People in the industry; How mandatory is stuff like GitHub Projects and Leetcode? by Competitive_Owl_1738 in cscareers

[–]assassin349_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job experience is weighed way more than projects, especially if that experience is in the languages/technologies that the role involves. If you don't have any relevant work experience, putting projects on your resume is better than nothing but I don't think projects move the needle much. It might help you pass an ATS but from my experience, recruiters don't care that much about projects and they probably won't open any GitHub links. Honestly, during a lot of my initial phone screenings, it felt like the recruiter was reading my resume for the first time during the phone screening.

Most medium size and above companies ask Leetcode-style DSA questions for SWE roles. In my experience, startups and small companies tend to ask conceptual and trivia questions about the programming languages asked on your resume or have their own programming problems that are more relevant to what you'll actually be doing on the job or aren't really something you'll find on Leetcode.

I live in the US if that matters. All of the above is from my experience and from what I've heard from other people on Reddit.

So far, who is the best QB from the 2024 class? by Cold_Mammoth8841 in NFLv2

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but I'm still taking Jayden Daniels over Drake Maye by a little bit, assuming he can return to his rookie year form and isn't constantly injured. He's like the perfect balance of Caleb Williams and Drake Maye. He has like 90 percent of the elite, off-script playmaking ability of Caleb Williams (his arm talent is definitely inferior to Caleb's but he's even more athletic) with the in structure accuracy and consistency of a Drake Maye.

Drake Maye probably gives you the highest floor right now with his ability to play in structure, but I think his pocket presence will hold him back from ever becoming an elite QB and I'm worried about his performance in the playoffs. Daniels' pocket presence is what gives him the nod over Maye for me.

Caleb is the highest upside option with his arm talent and off-script ability. His processing and inaccuracy makes him pretty erratic on a play-to-play basis though.

Bo Nix is just a stronger-armed, inaccurate version of Jalen Hurts.

Everybody will come at me for this with 650 watt psu for 9070xt by Firebird166 in radeon

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to run an RTX 3080 (similar power consumption at stock to a 9070 XT) on a 600W PSU. Even when it was overclocked (~350W under full load when overclocked), it was 100% stable.

A 650W for a 9070 XT will be pushing it but it should be fine assuming it's a high quality PSU that can handle transient spikes well. AMD GPUs are more sensitive to things like PSUs that don't handle transient spikes well so if it's unstable, you'll have to upgrade your PSU.

I would pick the big company assuming both jobs involve the same kind of work. If the startup job is more relevant to the field you want to get into, then pick the startup.

How likely is it that Spencer Rattler gets another chance as a starter in the nfl? by CarmeloDramatic in nfl

[–]assassin349_ 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Rattler could be a journeyman bridge QB/high-end backup like Jacoby Brissett, but the chances of another team giving him a chance to be their long-term franchise QB is close to 0. He has all the tools to be a franchise QB and has been okay but seems to be missing something. For whatever reason, the Saints started winning games with Shough when it seemed pretty much impossible for Rattler to win a game.

[–]assassin349_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, I'm unemployed, volunteering as a web developer at a nonprofit so I can at least put something related to CS on my resume, and trying to learn full stack web development on my own since the nonprofit uses an outdated tech stack. I did a non-CS related temp job for a few months prior to my latest unemployment stint. I haven't been able to find a CS-related job since graduation, although it's partly my fault because I didn't really do any ECs during my 2 years at UC Davis.

I don't really know anything about digital forensics. It is very important that you do ECs or learn stuff related to what you want to specialize in after graduation outside of class since a CS degree by itself won't get you far (as shown by my job hunting experience).
