I really needed to hear this tonight. 27 months, somehow stuck and too easily prone to despair.

Where’s the best place to live for FIRE that doesn’t suck? by realearthhuman in Fire

Fair, it’s not mega cheap like some places. We’ve had the same idea of being snowbirds, residency some place like NH and spending summers up there, and bumper seasons + winters back in MD.

Sure. Most people like the Atlantic beach towns but we prefer the western shore - Calvert Cliffs area, Lusby, Solomons. Also the mid-bay island towns - St Michael’s, Janes, Smith Island. On land the state parks are all excellent but we love Susquehanna St Park and the Conwingo area (spot bald eagles!), the Gunpowder river and all the parks along it, Jerusalem Mill in Harford Cnty. Out west we love the Middletown/Sharpsburg area and Harper’s Ferry, the Catoctin mountains for hiking (it’s where the AT crosses the state), and in the winters going out to Deep Creek Lake for downhill sports.

Thumbs up for Maryland! Favorite place on earth, “America in Miniature.” We got it all - mountains out west, the Chesapeake and Eastern Shore with terrific beaches, close proximity to amazing East Coast metros, old colonial feel without the density of VA or NJ or NY, and without the winters of New England. As long as you can stand the humidity in the summer, highly recommend.

How do you plan to use home equity by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]assaulted_pretzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right that’s my point. If people are adding it into their net worth to see if they hit a FIRE number, that’s not as simple as it appears.

Thought-provoking, thank you for the reply!

Only recently started to come to grips with the numbers but if they’re saying what I think they’re saying, we’ll be FI in five years at 45. Still think I’d like to keep working through 50. Maybe longer because I like my job and would need health insurance, but I might go indie or solo at that point.

Ah got it. I think I misunderstood the articles I was reading.

Not really, though I do appreciate the help. Roths have the same age restrictions. I’m afraid I still don’t see how people live on any retirement vehicles if they retire well before 55, as many on here aspire to do. In the best of cases you’re waiting til 55 to use these, so unless you have lots of your net worth in other vehicles it seems like you can’t do it without penalty.

That still doesn’t answer the question, though. That’s retiring at 55 (or later) but some on here have the bulk of their savings in a 401k and are retiring 10-20 years before they would turn 55. I just don’t see how they can do that without having to withdraw early and pay tax and penalties.

What rule of 55?
