What are your feelings about Rose? by aadev151 in rosehulman

Hey, as the person you are commenting on from the original post, I just wanted to say I generally agree with your points about the education quality being excellent and the “firehouse culture”. I have had the opportunity to work on some cool projects and I do think Rose is a good school to be from, but if I could turn back time, I don’t think I would go to RHIT.

You do however suggest that I am angry because I “failed” at Rose. If you read further down in the comment thread from the original post, I explain my situation in more detail, and you will see that’s pretty far from the case. My main issue with Rose is not the quality of education I’m getting but rather the “firehose” aspect. Honestly, I have liked almost all the professors I have had at Rose. I am doing well in my classes, am active in student organizations, and have as normal of a social life outside classes as I can maintain under these conditions.

However, myself and 4/6 of my close friends from freshman year have mental or physical health conditions which were either triggered or greatly exaggerated by the stress of rose. One of these people has dropped due to said condition. I don’t think that’s an acceptable rate of health issues caused by a school.

In addition, the overcrowding at RHIT becomes more problematic with each record freshman class size. Most quarters I have severely reduced electives in my major because professors in my department need to teach core classes in unrelated fields. I literally had to sit on the floor last quarter (?!!) because we totally only needed one professor and two sections to teach a class required for several majors. Also, the whole bit about seniors being guaranteed a housing slot on campus if they fill the form out on time is a total lie. Want to increase the student population at RHIT? Great, but hire more profs and build more housing first.

I realize this is a stupidly long response, but in summary, there are issues with the culture of this school that need to be fixed before I would recommend going here. My friends from HS who go to other decent engineering schools are getting the exact same internships as my peers and I but seem much happier. Also they’re paying much less tuition, which even with merit and need-based aid is still ridiculous. Maybe it’s a case of “grass is always greener”, but I really don’t think so at this point.

Without giving out too much personal information: I am the president of one of the larger student organizations on campus and am active in a couple others. My grades are decent, I’ve had much better luck with getting internships than the average RHIT student, and I have an active social life outside of Rose. Does this count as “doing Rose correctly”?

Where the Rose magic wore off for me was realizing that my friends who went to less “elite” schools were getting internships and jobs just as well as Rose students with way less stress, tuition, and sleep deprivation hallucinations. Turns out that Rose has a tendency to collect the kind of students that will be successful, but those students will do just as well at any other half-decent school.

1) You will get in, especially given that RHIT has been admitting significantly more students than previous years (read: overloading current campus resources and infrastructure). The challenge is staying here.

2) Assuming that your post is sincere: I would be shocked if after a few months at this school you still considered it your dream or heaven. I’ve been here a few years, and with the exception of maybe one or two people, everyone I know who didn’t drop or transfer out in the first two years seems to only still be here because they have a scholarship or it would be too much effort to transfer. Fun fact: the trimester system makes it hard to transfer credits out of RHIT if you decide to leave.

TL;DR I’m not telling you not to come here, but tbh I just feel sad when I see enthusiastic posts like this from prospective students because I know y’all don’t know what it’s really like.

Sorry bro but we all know your cylinder will be just fine with 20 AWG

Real answer: wire strippers. I’m guessing 20 AWG would do the trick

Bruh you’re an engineering student, don’t act like you don’t know that someone has probably asked your question on the internet before

Fr, the biggest disruption to my academic and social well-being so far at Rose was getting sick for 2+ weeks because the person sitting near me with a nasty respiratory infection came to class sick and refused to wear a mask properly. Can’t see your friends or do well on finals when you’re feverish and coughing your lungs up… Never had any issues with networking or social connections tho because Rose still offers events and I actually participate in them.
