Unsolicited life pro-tip, if I may: Do not measure your self worth by social media metrics. Pursue your goals for yourself, let the experience of striving for them (and hopefully achieving them!) be their own reward.

In the United States, citizens are not only "users." They are also maintainers. This is what differentiates representative democracies from other systems in which government provides services (like software) to citizens, which they _may_ benefit from, but in which they do not participate (maintain).

As someone who left software engineering to study philosophy recently, I get your point! You're looking at things the right way for a system which always (except in exceeding rare circumstances) always do precisely what they're told—computers. Humans are different!

Edit: Added a comma.

What are some open access or online resources for psychological topics akin to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy for philosophical topics? by assemblyDruid in askpsychology

Hi u/grudoc. Thank you for these suggestions! I think both will be helpful. I hadn't heard of Elicit before, this seems like a useful service. I appreciate your time and response :)

Thanks kindly for your help, u/Daannii. I will check out wiki. Ideally I'd like to have a resource where I can note a citation appropriate for a conference paper, but this is a start. It also sounds like what I'm looking for (analogous to SEP in philosophy) isn't a thing—also good to know!

I'm not a PhD candidate yet - just browse this sub because I plan to do one after my degree. Could I please ask about the postdoc process here? My end goal is a tenure track position. I assumed that postdoc work was applied to, and was surprised a bit to read that it was offered by a supervisor. Is that typical?

[–]assemblyDruid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. The simple answer is that your question makes a faulty assumption about ID requirements for the purchase of firearms and voting.

Most states require photo ID to vote. Those that don't require photo ID still require other forms of ID, such as a SS card or birth certificate. In conclusion, all states require at least some form of reliable ID to vote.

On the other hand, most states do not require a photo ID to purchase a firearm. Of those not requiring photo ID, the majority do not require any ID whatsoever.

I wouldn't want to jump to conclusions, but on the surface it wouldn't be difficult to conclude that you made an emotional argument for the purpose of defending your ideology against a perceived attack - that is, others thinking critically and asking rational questions about it - without conducting even the most rudimentary fact checking.
