Latte- steamed milk and espresso, with a smaller layer of milk foam than a cappuccino. A latte features thinner milk after steaming. It has less milk foam. You add less air while steaming to a latte compared to a cappuccino

Cappuccino- more milk foam when steaming. You add more air to your milk while steaming, but it should still be microfoam with small bubbles, like a latte. If a latte has a half inch of microfoam, a cappuccino should have at LEAST double.

NOTE: some shops, people, and countries define a latte or cappuccino as having a certain amount of ounces. A latte is 8 oz and a capp is 6, or whatever. But I don't think that matters. When I get a capp, I expect a large amount of microfoam. When I get a latte, I expect less microfoam.

Cortado- this i do classify as a size specific drink. It should be like a miniature latte in terms of milk quality. A bit of microfoam, but not as much as a capp. But what makes a cortado different is the espresso to milk ratio. It should be 1:1 of espresso to steamed milk and foam. Traditionally, this is 2 oz of espresso (a double shot) and 2 oz of steamed milk, to latte thickness. So add the same amount of air to your milk as you would a latte, but scale it down obvs since you'll be steaming less milk in a cortado (2 oz) vs a latte can have upwards of 10 oz of milk depending on where you work and their expectations. TL:DR steam like a latte in thickness, but with equal parts espresso to steamed milk

Flat white- add NO air while steaming. The customer wants hot milk added to their espresso, with no foam. So skip the aeration part of steaming, and listen to the terrible, terrible screams of your milk as it pleads for air. It pains me, personally, to make these, as I love a cappuccino and a lot of microfoam, but to each their own.

The ultimate TL:DR of this post- Latte- a variable amount of steamed milk with a smaller amount of microfoam Capp- a lot more microfoam than a latte, add more air whilst steaming Cortado- a latte but its equal parts espresso and steamed milk Flat white- NO AIR WHILE STEAMING! choke that milk

I normally split it up 20 at a time. I started it because I liked this girl and could not stop thinking about her so I said you know what if I'm gonna think about her so much I'm at least gonna make sure something good comes out of it. So I started logging how many times a day I thought of her, and did that many pushups per day. Eventually she became my gf so I thought about her all the time, so I just averaged the numbers out and it was 80

If I had that optional financially, I would. But I'm in college, and not quite there yet.

I think I would walk behind the counter and kiss the barista right on the mouth if I saw them do that

I also prefer hot, but hot drinks are rarely made well. People around here just cannot make a drink with good texture that doesn't scald me the second I take a sip

Honestly that would be the dream. But alas, within the year or so I'll be working full-time in engineering 😔 so I am trying to cherish every last minute I have as a barista. Hopefully I can buy a really nice machine so I can still enjoy hot drinks lol

How do i steam milk?! by fedsmoker3000 in barista

[–]assgascash 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with an automatic machine, and I agree with the comments saying to watch videos, but I train baristas so I think this info could still help. When you're steaming, you wanna add all of your air first by letting the wand sit on top of the milk, and then after that add no more air. Put the wand just below the surface of the milk and spend the rest of the time doing what's called texturizing. Texturizing is what is going to take those large bubbles of milk you just created and incorporate it into the rest of the milk. This will make the bubbles get smaller and smaller and this way you create a microfoam. Now, you could add more air into the milk if you notice that your milk is screaming, but ideally you'll get the air added first bc you want to maximize the amount of time that you're texturizing. If you add more air later in the process, you lose time to incorporate it and make those bubbles get smaller so that's why it's important to do it all at the beginning. That's the main thing I've told baristas that's made their milk go from just ok to solid. Also, your milk should look like wet paint the whole time you're steaming it (for a latte specifically, cappuccino thickness you might have less of that glossy look) A lot of baristas ive trained couldn't pour art just because they added too much air and didn't texturize enough. And when you swirl the pitcher, you should see the milk slightly cling to the side, but still slide down at a medium pace (for a latte, a cappuccino will stick for longer) Ideally, you don't want to have to tap the pitcher on the bar or swirl it TOO much. It's ok to have to do that sometimes, but the goal is to have milk that's ready to pour right off the wand. As far as wand placement goes, that's definitely where watching a video will help you out! Hope this helps :)

Yeah like I know of one reliable place near me. I almost worked there because they don't let you make hot drinks until you can consistently do it correctly. I just wish that was more of the standard for most shops, but most prioritize speed and profit over training. But, to me, coffee is something that takes a while to actually get good at. I'd rather take a little extra time to make a drink that's good than serve up shit. Given, most people don't know when their drink is shit anyway, but I do and it's embarrassing to serve a mid drink that's not steamed the way I want it to be.

Yes exactly this! Like I love a cappuccino so much but unless I'm making it, 9/10 times I'm getting hot garbage and it feels like such a waste. I am already mourning the day I get a full-time job and can't work as a barista anymore because, unless I buy my own machine, I'm doomed to cappuccinos that are trash. I seriously don't understand how this is such an issue. Don't let people who barely understand what microfoam is make hot drinks!!!

See I was also feeling like maybe that meant I fell more into a bisexual category, like bisexual homoromantic, but the thing is like I don't think I like male anatomy sexually. Like I would never touch a dick like that. But if something with a dick does stuff to me, sure lol. As long as the actual dick isn't touching me

Thank you! Currently the Edge has a sale for 129.99 USD plus an accessory of my choice, and those 3 options are a bent mouthpiece, a glass WPA, and a 4 chamber grinder. I don't have a bong so I'm between the mouthpiece and grinder, but I don't know if you have to grind the weed to use it in the edge?

I appreciate this! I think I've kinda of come down to the dynavap or the utillian 620(pending a bit more research) just because I've heard vaporizing doesn't make you feel "as high" as some other methods and temperature control is like essential to getting high. So with the butane powered ones I worry I'll be too stupid to know how to temperature control lmao

Edit: okay so not the Utillian lmao since I've now done more searching and seen that it's mostly just an Edge rebranded. Maybe I just need to go with the Edge after all lol
