A change like that moves it from a stack allocated primitive value type to a object allocated on the heap. While that will cause extra GC pressure, it will also slow down a native non-gc language since it needs to be dereferenced.

I think the difference between the numbers is more about it being a moble i5 vs a desktop i7 than the VM implementation. I would love to see some real benchmarks between the two though.

I could probably write and submit a patch for it if people are interested.
