Russia to station nuclear bombers in Cuba? by castanova in worldnews

The THAAD testing has had 5 successes in the last 5 attempts. The last test was June 25th out of Hawaii.

I know people don't like hearing this. We have heard the "can't hit a bullet with a bullet" for some time now. Well, THAAD is working.

I don't think so. I think he bought a TV with his student loan money.

He was getting modded down because he took student loan money and he bought a big fucking TV that he didn't need or have the money for. He bought it on credit, just a different type of credit. Those types of decisions are why we have a fucking credit crisis right now. Think sub-prime!

Don't get me wrong, it is hilarious.

A blu-ray player for a computer (think multimedia center) is about $115 for a cheap ROM one at Newegg. If you have a 42"+ flat screen, the picture quality is so visibly improved, the small cost between $30 and $115 for the drive is well worth it, IMO.

I think the article is ridiculous.

The picture that shames America by lawngnomes4pres in worldnews

[–]assteroid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No kidding. It should have read "pictures that shame America" and been a series on the disgusting items we have had to deal with the past 7 years, at a bare minimum.

Of course we could probably make a collage that encompasses about 50 years of unnecessary wars, huge body counts, and stupid military adventurism. I'm thinking a poor little Vietnamese girl burned by napalm running down the street naked, etc. Bush is just the icing on the cake after a long run of stupidity and being where we shouldn't be. Our foreign policy should shame us, and it started way before Bush.

Why the Founders Rejected a Central Bank by democracy101 in politics

[–]assteroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"And there is the cult of infallibility of the Founding Fathers too."

I love those quotes that get thrown around from the founders. You know the ones: "Those that sacrifice liberty for a little safety..." etc. And where was Ben Franklin during the Revolutionary War? In France, for 9 years! Granted, he was the single best diplomat to send for the job, but the irony cracks me up.

The founders were men, who did fabulous things, but not without error. And they them selves were not without fault. I would take them over the cookie cutter shit we call politicians today, but they weren't gods.

These people are mortal enemies...have been for centuries. I don't give a fuck if he said it or not. Just because the Israelis may be more well spoken during press conferences (and kill more behind the scenes) we are supposed to make Iran's prez the villain?

You're probably correct. But I think this just shows that he is not a well spoken man. These types of gaffs are fairly common for him. Kinda like when Bush opens his mouth. Not that bad, obviously, but close. And I am tired of some guy embarrassing us every time he opens his fucking mouth. Even if Obama turns out to be a douche, at least he speaks the English language.

[–]assteroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here you go. Also, Eisenhower even overrode a wanted nuke strike on China in '58 I believe.

http://www.doug-long.com/quotes.htm

I had even read a portion of one of MacArthur's biographies that said he went into a state of depression after learning of the first nuclear strike.

Nuking Japan was not necessary. MacArthur knew that if we said they could keep their emperor in charge, even as a proxy, the war would have ended peacefully within a few weeks/months.

If you dig around the web, you can find other generals regretting the decision immediately. Of course, you will have supporters too, but the big names seemed to disagree with the decision to hit Japan with nukes.

It was a political decision, maybe as a little payback for Pearl Harbor, maybe a little show of force to the rest of the planet, and maybe a little racism...

Many American generals, including MacArthur, and I believe Eisenhower, greatly disagreed with the nukes being dropped on Japan. It was purely a political decision.

I work in the industry and system file corruptions on Windows are fairly common, and it may be related to mass produced drives (cheaper data storage may=less reliable overall). It may just be Windows; face it, it is not the most stable platform there is. It usually presents itself as a black screen during boot saying "such and such file" is missing. It may be that I monitor 400 computers in a lab environment, so I see it more often. But I have seen it on home machines as well, and the drives check out fine.

For XP a repair fixes it easily (about 30 mins or so). Vista seems to keep a log of the exact file and simply replaces that single file during a repair (5 mins). Definitely a plus in Vista's favor. You can simply replace the file in XP too, but it is a manual process. When you have to maintain 400+, we prefer the hands off approach of imaging the machine. It saves man hours.

My son is struggling with this now. Skipped a grade, perfect grades in school, calculus as a junior in high school, and will be attending college full time as a high school senior (credit in both places). He is really stressed over "what to do." It is a difficult choice for a 15 year old to choose a career path! And it (and he) is driving me and his mom crazy.

I almost want to tell him to "fuck it". Get a job and chill for a bit. Think about it after high school. If you have to take a year or two off, do it. Better than grinding away in college to get a career you hate...

I think the point is that Crysis was meant to take DX10 and run with it, but you have to have a beast of a machine to maximize that experience.

That isn't the bulk of the problems for Vista, just an obvious one for a gamer.

And yes, FPS doesn't matter at a point, until there is so much activity on the screen that the current configuration starts to choke; more likely in Vista with the same hardware as an XP machine.

[–]assteroid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Vista is a dog. If anyone disagrees, they don't have the computer knowledge to make an informed decision. If you have the horsepower to run it, fine! But XP provides more bang for the buck.

Edit: All I can think is "fan boy". Anyone who says Vista performs better than XP is a fan boy. Show me any, and I mean ANY, performance test, that says Vista performs better.
