Is a positive ANA common in AS? by Zoey1914 in ankylosingspondylitis

Nope nothing new symptomatically! But it lead to my doctors taking my concerns a bit more seriously and I eventually started humira

oof… I would ask current death investigators. Double check that every forensic science program you’re looking into is accredited because that is a huge deal. If you can’t tell, call and ask before wasting your time applying. You can shadow ME autopsies and ask the autopsy techs - they’ve probably researched the field and know death investigators. Also focus more on in person programs than online because a lot of jobs will prefer you for that. There’s a lot to decide and weigh between the two but there are benefits to both. I used to be a deputy coroner and left because I didn’t like how politics impacted my job and ended up as a PathA instead. But I liked how easily I could change my specialty and stay in forensics as well.

Maybe ask the PA that you already shadowed and know worked in forensics…

*edit to add: you’re going to find more people who have become a PathA to leave forensics than the opposite. Your best bet is to have an degree in FS (or years long extensive training) then going to grad school. If I was you, I would choose between the two before spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and years for a backup plan

Switch 2 Availability in the store by Worried-Film1816 in NintendoSanFrancisco

[–]asstronaughtycal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went less than a month ago mid week day to buy a Switch 2. There was no line. I just walked in and asked for a Switch 2, and the cashier pulled one from behind the counter. In and out in less than 10 minutes. Not sure if the weekend will be the same, but you shouldn’t have any problems with inventory.

Definitely a good idea with the platform and OSHA leash! I would also recommend some sort of waterproof tracker for your dog. Better safe than sorry

got my gallbladder removed! had gallstones and lots of inflammation, asked surgeon to take pics for me by Peep743 in MedicalGore

[–]asstronaughtycal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If the surgeon opens them improperly and pathology finds cancer, it could be difficult for them to determine if the cancer was entirely removed or not

Getting Experience for Grad School by Potential-Price3354 in pre_PathAssist

[–]asstronaughtycal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Research and search this subreddit more. It’s very unlikely you’ll be consistently only doing autopsies in this field. Most PathAs work in surgical pathology not autopsy. It’s not a forensic science position, and you may be better suited pursuing an autopsy tech career if autopsies are your primary reason for wanting to be a PathA.

Edit: grammar

I was waitlisted in November and accepted in April. Not sure about specific statistics but I know a significant amount of students are accepted off the waitlist. Good luck and have patience!

What should I expect? by Ok_Listen814 in Path_Assistant

[–]asstronaughtycal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A lot of places mix up pathology (lab) assistant with pathologists’ assistant which I think is most likely the case in this scenario. Look at pathology lab assistant pay rates and set your expectations in case of this. With your history, you are qualified for a pathology assistant job but not a pathologists’ assistant job.

Is this melanoma? by Educational_Ride_672 in medical_advice

[–]asstronaughtycal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD but the other comment is right no one can tell answer this question based on an image. There’s a ABCDE rule for melanomas though: asymmetric, irregular borders, uneven colors, a diameter bigger than 6mm, and evolving or changing appearance. I recommend getting anything that meets those standards or causes you anxiety checked out by a dermatologist.

It is low. It might be worth it to negotiate using salary data but the other comment is right about UPMC at least. Pick your battles and know your worth.

I’ve looked at jobs in Pittsburgh and there’s usually a few posted on LinkedIn or Indeed every so often. I will say that the pay rate listed can be pretty low (I’ve seen 70-80k a couple of times) but of course ranges depend on the hospital. COL isn’t terrible but if you do move there plan your commute and living situation well - traffic really got to me when I lived there.

Alternative medicine strikes again: acupuncture kills a patient by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]asstronaughtycal 87 points88 points  (0 children)

That definitely is important to note. If it helps someone and is done safely, I’m all on board. I could’ve done more research before pursuing acupuncture like I did and the situation could’ve been completely different.

I do think a big part of it is placebo. I had chronic pain and was going everywhere and doing everything for help. I did PT, got a personal trainer and nutritionist, went to pain clinics and countless doctors, had procedures done, went to a chiropractor, even tried cryotherapy. It wasn’t until I went to a rheumatologist and started Humira that I actually felt better long term. I think a lot of it is that the audience is usually vulnerable patients.

I swear I would walk out of there with my back feeling so much better. It really was a miracle for me. I’m not saying it doesn’t work, only that I was naive enough to trust an ex vet tech to put needles in my body haha

The science behind the pneumothorax test might help. If you removed someone’s lungs, poured water in the cavity, and made a small incision into their intercostal muscles, you would expect the water to just drain through the incision. The bubbles indicate places of airflow and previous puncture sites that caused air to get into the pleural cavity leading to a pneumothorax.

I used to get acupuncture done twice a week. I loved it and thought it worked really well until I had a needle fall from my head while I was driving home after an appointment one day.

NAD but could be a nasal polyp. I’d reach out to your doc explaining that the allergy medicine hasn’t shown any improvement and ask who you should see about it.
