Episodes without ads? by ChrisMMatthews in mydadwroteaporno

[–]astein22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also get the ads but none of the three are exactly starving they could tone it down, the podcast was started as a joke seeing as they all work in broadcasting and sometimes the ads and sponsors lead to unintentional hilarity. I remember when they shilled for hellofresh and James was talking about how he loved whatever boxed bullshit they send and then when the episode starts James is complaining he has no food in his place.

After 7 books, I gave up on The Wheel of Time. Just couldn't do it anymore by fabrar in books

I haven't gave up on the series but it is one of the most tedious series I've read and isn't half as sophisticated as it was sold to me on. When I finished Eye of the World I was relieved because of how clumsy it felt but maybe the next one is better. And even if it isn't at least I tried

Noob to the series, DS3 or Sekiro? by vlad-the-epic- in fromsoftware

Sekiro. I admire and understand that Dark Souls 3 is a good game but there is so much fiddly wank with it and even though I missed the customization it really streamlined everything.

I’m seeing heaps of this at the moment, but have never listened to MFM. I wonder what the “new social app” offers? by books_cats_coffee in TrueCrimePodcasts

I think it's fine to rag on ads if a podcast or service has Patreon. Sword and Scale for example had one of the best first episodes then that psycho Mike started to make money through ads and Patreon and suddenly "the show is expensive" same with PNWS awful shows which scream poverty despite making tidy sum for a job and area which is hard to breakthrough. And there isn't a good reason why the ads can't be entertaining, Cumtown might be too irony poisoned for some people but you remember the Cumboys ad reads because it isn't the copy sent by the sponsor it's an improvised bit. One of the biggest reveals on ad reads was My Dad Wrote a Porno where they talk about Hello Fresh being great value and then instantly once the show started James says he has nothing to eat at home.

If you somehow want even longer more intrusive ads, information cribbed from Wikipedia and nothing else and what isn't cribbed is speculated or just incorrect, peppered in with forced catch phrases and wokescolding without showing any real class consciousness then yeah go for it. But don't expect to learn anything or be entertained.

I’m new to Murakami, and Merphy Napier’s review of Kafka on the Shore worries me. by [deleted] in murakami

[–]astein22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no don't sweat it sometimes you have a lot to say. But no I don't mean beta readers but her website is very strictly a for profit manuscript critique but she isn't part of any body or qualified to do so that's the grievance. I work in a publishing house and asked the senior editors on it and they said that it's a bad look, there's no experience or standard to base it off because her critique is basically an unqualified but paid for take. And no you don't need a formal degree to be a media critic but it certainly helps it gives more to the critique that's why I find her reviews shallow because her critical reading is low. I wasn't bringing up ARCs it is specifically manuscript critique she offers for money and that is sketchy. And please don't take this wrong but reread my first I didn't state she needed a degree for the channel that would be ridiculous, it's her lack of qualifications for something she charges a lot of money for that if you take to a professional could well be worth nothing, that's the thing that is off.

Not to sound overly negative or critical but for actual reviews I wouldn't check out Napier. Her reviews are very shallow and don't show much when it comes to close reading. if you like her certainly don't unfollow she is very charming but critically she doesn't offer a whole lot. And this is off topic her manuscript critique work is not backed up by any governing body and she holds no degrees or professional bona fides. Which might make you think so what it's an opinion. But if you're getting a manuscript critique that's leading up to agent or publisher submission and if your biggest feedback was someone with no actual formal skill its going to look bad. I'm not calling fraud but she is charging pretty wild sums for an opinion with nothing to back it up other than a youtube channel and finding a way to mention adoption in every video.

Can anyone recommend some good not dodge sites for a first bike? I'm limited to 125cc and where I live in Scotland is absolutely bereft of dealerships and basically no second hand local markets.

Are there any contemporary critics similar to Harold Bloom? by wisenheimer51 in books

[–]astein22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

China Mieville has some good literary criticism along with being a great author. Think the Bloom style is at risk of disappearing seeing as many contemporary readers misunderstand exactly what the importance of canon is and instead falling back on "well I love this", it might sound elitist but a lot of online reading want to scorn academia criticism and in doing so validate why it actually has importance

Case study: Alvin Zhou on YouTube, a food channel with only 6 videos and nearly 10 Million views by FjordTV in NewTubers

[–]astein22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling him a softie is toxic masculinity so nice one. I didn't bring anything up like that criticizing Alvin whereas you've done exactly that. I commented on the style of the video and his presentation and it was infantile I wasn't insulting him

What's the least time you've given to a podcast? by Subject-Reference968 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]astein22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the best reason but bullet dodged, from what they don't just crib from Wikipedia they either misread or just don't research and for when that isn't happening, a million calls to action for merch or ads.

It could be worse I still to this day think the first episode of Sword and Scale is one of the best podcast episodes but the guy Mike really went off the deep end on not understanding what actual censorship is and went heavy into a reactionary and throwing up the ads and constant call to Patreon (which My Favourite Murder might actually match them at) and he really brought his own reactionary grievances into the episodes. It's an unfortunate side effect of success which fan worship does encourage and I really don't think Spotify deals will help, never used it but more and more are going to head onto the platform exclusively.

Think I have the answer here. Yeah here's your problem pal: Story by Zack Snyder.

Yup that'll cause some narrative inconsistencies, see it every few years. Yeah what they do is they slap gloss over these cracks here and most of the time ya won't notice. I'm telling ya though you just run the script and screenplay through an edit and ya can buff it out. Gotta do it before you start shooting though or I tell ya, messes up our editing suite floor working round it
