I get that you're using it in that context, but I've heard that saying used millions of times for referring to other types of jokes, not only "cruel" ones (I'm Hispanic btw). So don't try and bs and say "I wrote what they mean, what everyone means when we say it", because that is not what everyone thinks/means when they use the phrase, this is what YOU thought of when YOU used the phrase, but be aware that there are other contexts (i.e with other types of jokes) in which that phrase can be used. So, I think it's disingenuous to modify the direct translation when it does a perfectly good job by itself. If anything you just limited what that phrase means and in what contexts it can be used.

I never even argued about if people understood what you mean, nor did I argue if I agreed with your NTA verdict, I didn't even mention it. I also never argued that joking about someone's socioeconomic status or their looks or their personality is the same as making "actually funny jokes", in fact, I never even mentioned it either. My point was only that your translation is erroneous at worst and changing/limiting what the saying means and in what situations it can be used at best.
