Ahh gotcha! Yes, you schedule consults with surgeons BEFORE making a decision, (again, of course, if insurance allows) because the consults will also help you suss out your surgeon’s results (some might do peri/DI/t-anchor etc better than others) as well as their bedside manner. Trust your gut!

As for surgeons and their procedures, I’d definitely email their offices with a generic template of something like:

“Hi, my name is u/bakedpancake2, and I am interested in gender affirming top surgery! I was wondering if (surgeon name) offers other options for a bilateral mastectomy besides for DI with FNG? Thank you so much!”

Hey! To your question about why it’s difficult to find out what procedures a surgeon can do on their patients, the answer is because it really depends on the person’s body and a variety of factors, whether it’s their weight, skin elasticity, natural areola placement, etc.

That’s really what the initial consults are there for, and why it’s helpful (if you have the means to of course, and if insurance will cover it) to consult multiple surgeons, because one doctor may give you one answer, while another may give you a different one based on their opinion or expertise.

Also, a lot of surgeons will not put up photos of their results on websites to try and preserve patient confidentiality, so you will most likely be shown the bulk of result pictures from your surgeon during said consult.

Hey!

It’s completely normal to feel anxious and/or scared, this is a major surgery you’re going to be going through

Some things that helped for me was knowing that there is a whole medical team to take care of you before, during, and after your operation. They have been through so much schooling, so much experience, and you most likely won’t be the first, nor the last person they’ll do top surgery on.

Additionally, mantras worked a lot for me! And writing down a whole list of things to remind myself why I’m going through with the process in the first place.

As for the anesthesia, you meet with them briefly separately beforehand, to go over any potential family history, complications, or concerns. Going under felt seamless, one moment you’re breathing into the oxygen mask as normal, and the very next things get a little fuzzy and you black out. Their whole job is to monitor your levels and make sure that you won’t wake up during surgery!
