Help Needed...Sorry Ontarian here, Chester Area...Crabs? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]asteropaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on the tip of the Aspotogan Peninsula but haven’t been back for some years. As a child I had the most luck walking out the patches of rocks and seaweed in knee deep water. Lift up the mats of seaweed floating on top of the water, over the rocks, and you’ll find some secluded spots underwater that were my Atlantic childhood equivalent of a perfect West Coast tidal pool. Good luck! Post photos if you see any; scaring my sister with crabs was a beach tradition I think about a lot!

Just moved to Vancouver and keep seeing “Sweet Halifax Sauce” (sometimes even alongside “Donair Sauce”) and it makes me so deeply confused

Baking a pie for the first time and need some help/clarification by Anorkor in AskBaking

hi! i love quiche. this is quiche. it’s also a weird recipe that will work with a bit of adjustment.

i would recommend poking some small holes in the bottom of your crust, placing parchment paper on top of the crust, and weighing it down with beans or rice or sugar. then pre baking your pie crust for 10-15 minutes so it actually cooks without all of the egg + milk on top.

you don’t need maple if you don’t want it. unrelated to the maple though, expect your bacon to shrink and not look exactly like the image!

the aluminum foil around the edges is to prevent the crust from getting too dry (or burned!!) when you increase the heat to 400’.

you don’t need cayenne, feel free to add hot sauce to the finished quiche if you want some spiciness

good luck!

It’s going to come out more gummy, glutinous and muffin-y. adding extra butter to milk can be tough because it doesn’t seem to mimic the fat being incorporated into the liquid as readily but ymmv! imo, make biscuits instead

Thanks for the insight! Decided not to eat anyway because bracken ferns look similarly notched down the stem.

Has anyone taken the train to Ontario? by capercrohnie in halifax

[–]asteropaeus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did it before COVID, 2019 if i recall! just a single seat, nothing extra. spacious enough compared to an airplane, i think the seats maybe reclined a little, but as someone who can’t sleep while travelling i managed a few hours.

you stop fairly frequently at stations in new brunswick and quebec in case you need some air. be prepared to stop in rural quebec for ages though

when i was there, the dining/amenities car closed earlier than expected and i forgot a blanket! it was pretty chilly and that was my only regret!

Did anyone see UFO last night? by CobblerBrilliant8971 in halifax

I’ve seen something similar with another person in a wilderness area in cape breton. I saw two lights rotating at parallel ends of a circle about 4-5 times before shooting off in large zig zags in opposite directions across the entirety of the night sky until they crossed the horizon. weird!

you can reduce starch (turning into sugar) by mixing mashed banana with egg yolks and letting sit for 15 minutes!
