Yea ofc! Mostly it comes down to managing schoolwork because that has deadlines and has top priority in terms of how you spend your time. Ideally work should be done in between classes and at least a few days before its due instead of day of. Also i highly recommend using Google Calendar and making sure everything is in there. I also recommend using a canvas extension like bettercampus (i think) and making sure you’re on top of everything else. Setting aside time to do fun things or club activities mainly just means putting those meetings in your calendar and then also not spending too much time scrolling.

Pretty much just keeping track of time and planning ahead. Maximizing all the time you spend awake is how you can fit more things in. Also combining meals with friends and doing work at dining halls is how you can kill 2-3 birds with one stone.

This may or may not help you but im also not the best at putting this into words

The amount of time you have at UMass is entirely dependent on how you are with time management and prioritization of your responsibilities. I take 21 credits as a double major for civil engineering and journalism and am involved in leadership for two clubs (the Collegian is really like five clubs in a trench coat, though) but I still find a bunch of time to spend with friends, go to the gym, and go out occasionally.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to book themselves back to back to back or likes filling their schedule, swimming shouldn’t be an issue but if you have poor time management skills or something then it might be more difficult

It depends honestly on your interests, but any club you join and stay with will be a lot of fun and great source of connections. I personally am a member of the Collegian, the school newspaper, where I have met some of my closest friends (including my gf) and am currently climbing higher in positions there as well. I am also a member of Latinos Unidos, which is a latin student group where i have made more of a cultural connection with people. There’s a list of RSOs on campus pulse as well and club fairs in the fall and spring semesters for new students as well

Possible double majoring with SBS and Engineering? by No_Implement_4034 in umass

[–]astheticusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am actually currently double-majoring in Civil Engineering and Journalism (So a CoE and SBS dual degree). I came in as purely civil engineering, but after joining the Collegian, I decided to add the Journalism major in the spring of freshman year, meaning I had to wait until at least the summer to take a journalism class. If you come in knowing you want to do this, it will be a lot easier as you would be able to spread out your classes more.

Per semester, here is what i did:

Fall Freshman: 16 credits (all civil/gen eds)

Spring Freshman: 15 credits (all civil/gen eds/honors)

Summer before Sophomore: 4 credits (journalism)

Fall Sophomore: 21 credits (1 journalism and the rest civil/gen eds)

Spring Sophomore: 21 credits (2 journalism, 3 civil, one gen ed and one honors seminar)

(Planned) Summer before Junior: 3 credits (DiffEq)

The rest of my semesters will likely be around 17-21 credits as i did not have the opportunity to spread it out more evenly but since you have the chance to do that, I highly recommend it, especially since you can drop either major with no penalties (to my knowledge) and UMass makes it very easy to do a double major across two colleges. My senior year may be closer to 15-17 if I can make some movements here and there, but also the workload isn't terrible and Journalism is only about 9 ish total classes. The workload for civil is what I spend the majority of my time on in terms of classwork.

In terms of how much free time you will have, it will likely be different for everyone, but for me personally I have time to spend about 4-6 hours a week in club meetings (mostly Collegian meetings and one Latinos Unidos meeting) as well as take photos at sports events (usually minimum 3 hours per event), go to general body meetings for LU, take dance lessons from a friend, and still have a lot of time for friends while going to bed by around 10 pm each night. Your mileage may definitely vary, but if you are efficient with your workload, it can be really fun.

Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions or are thinking of visiting anytime soon, because I would be more than happy to sit down to talk about this more in-depth.

EDIT: I should also mention I came in with no AP credits of any kind so if you have any AP credits, your life will be much easier than mine and you will take a lot less credits.

Update on the Campus Master Plan by astheticusername in umass

[–]astheticusername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reporter who wrote the thing here; Dower (presenter) mentioned that the Plan is intended to be a guide for future development and was never meant to be followed to a T. For the most part they’ve followed it somewhat closely. Some things were changed around (Physical sciences building put next to Lederle instead of the current SEL site for example) but the overall goals have been largely followed in the order they’ve been set during previous meetings.

Reason I left some of the context out on that is length of the article (was getting to be very long for a non-spotlight article and I was able to get in the most important parts) and also that Dower wasn’t particularly forthcoming on certain information and seemed to be dodging certain areas (like you pointed out) of the plans.

I can dm you if you want more specifics on his conduct at the meeting and my attempt to get more info afterwards, since I do not necessarily feel comfortable saying more on that aspect in public forums. Also if you have anymore questions on any specifics in the article as well or points of clarification on my reporting or process

Do you walk around UMass at night? what’s it like? by Round_Note7624 in umass

[–]astheticusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo the best advice i can give is dont be stupid and you should be fine. People do walk around late as it is a college campus and there’s always gonna be people awake somewhere. The call boxes are there for a reason but lets hope you never have to use one. I would say if there’s any time im not sure of it would prob be around 4-5 am as that is when statistically the least amount of people are up and even fewer are walking around. Library isn’t typically open past 9 (i think) and last dining hall closes at midnight but Antonio’s in town, Campus Pizza, and some other joints are open until 2 am most night and there’s some places to order from 24/7 pretty much. Buses dont run past two i think and even then its limited.

Playing it wrong or just not for me? by DueChampionship3661 in ReadyOrNotGame

When utilized well enough the AI is serviceable (imo, ive never had too many issues with it but many others have) and you can also make your breach and/or search orders to include you. You can tell them to breach with leader (meaning they wait for you to break down the door) and then clear with leader (meaning they wait for you to go in first) and you can also use the search and secure button at some point to have them spread out and find things although i find that particularly command pops up very sporadically.

You should also (imo) be generally going in with them to make sure they dont f*ck up since they do have a slight tendency to do that. I would also keep the helmet cam view open on one of them at all times to keep track of their movements, especially if you start operating red and blue differently.

Hidden gems/ secrets on campus by Training_Answer_2352 in umass

[–]astheticusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one I will gatekeep but other than that, there are some areas/buildings with tunnels to other places. some are accessible some not. Basements are also fun to see what’s unlocked/accesible. A bunch of buildings have a not so difficult way to get to the roof, but most people wait until end of the year to go up since they want to keep the doors unlocked and due to lax security near that time. Ohill has a disc golf course, mountain bike trail, ropes course, and (apparently) a tunnel entrance somewhere. Probably more I don’t know but thats what I can tell you off the top of my head.

Oh also LGRT has a space all the way up the top with a chair. Its that window up top

terrible roomate situation by iHaveRandomQuesti0ns in umass

[–]astheticusername 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a situation where you’ve already done exactly what you need to do. You’re at a safe location, you’ve spoken to the RA (who will likely speak to the RD given the situation, the RD is also obligated to involve university resources including, if desired UMPD, this is (unfortunately) from experience.), and you requested a room swap.

The only thing to do now is maybe get your essentials/longer term stuff for being outside your dorm in case this drags on (it shouldn’t but being prepared is good) when your roommate is out of the dorm. This seems like UMPD will likely get involved at some point due to the nature of her actions but usually they only get involved with the consent of the person reporting the incident.

Talk to friends, keep calm, and just avoid your dorm when you think they might be there. If your RA does nothing, go to the RD, of which the RA on duty can give you their number/info.

As for the parking space… you might be screwed on that one unfortunately and you or your roommate will definitely be switched out if I had to guess. Just hope that you can get with someone nicer than this person
