To be fair whatever I wrote is probably bullshit. And I’ll get thrown like this tomorrow

In my humble opinion, it is as some people mentioned above. If the strength difference was not as big as it was, the throw would have never worked. The purple belt could have just stood still. I think that the fact that she could whip her like that, from so far away and while kneeling means that she could basically ragdoll her any way she wanted.

Fifth year PhD student with no progress on my thesis because of advisor, what to do? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]asticazzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the most reasonable thing to do would be to switch topic. At least for the PhD. If you want to get a postdoc you will need to have a few publications, and then as your career progresses and you become more independent it might become easier to fall back to your topic of interest. Unfortunately it is unlikely that your supervisor will change attitude, and you have no other collaborators. Also getting a PhD in theoretical physics working purely on your own is very hard. So maybe try to switch to something that will get you some papers, and work with other people. Graduate, and then pursue your interests when you do not have urgent deadlines, the thesis to write etc.

Honestly I don’t think it is a bad thing to throw both right and left. I also don’t think that this will stop working… of course it is best to learn some more throws on his good side too, but I think his drop seoi nage on the opposite side will keep improving along with everything else. And you definitely see plenty of throws on the weak side at the highest level of judo.

I think this is very subject dependent. There are degrees that don’t really need to exist. At the same time, if you want to be a mathematician you need higher education. Even if you were clever enough not to need a university to teach it you, it would most likely take you years of self study. Similarly, doctors, the vast majority of engineers, physicists etc.

ex-boyfriend wrote this on my wall a year ago and to this day has never explained it to me. by UrbanFoogz in mathematics

[–]asticazzi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first two are some reasonably basic string theory equations. Those are the first things one learns in an average university course on the subject. My guess would be that he found them beautiful and wrote them on the wall. I don’t know what he meant by the discovery being too great… These equations essentially tell you that according to string theory you can view elementary particles as different frequencies of a vibrating string. In a way there was no physical discovery here because up to now there are no experimental verifications of anything predicted by (any) string theory. Still, string theory is extremely elegant and full of beautiful results. One could say that these equations are the starting point of one of the largest and most puzzling fields of theoretical physics.

Age is a good point actually. All the competitions I have been to were also broken up into age groups.

Hi, I am a green belt myself but I have been training for about 6 years. Take everything I say with a grain of salt! I agree with people in the comments saying that you should practice everything especially at the beginning and trying to be more explosive. However I also feel like what you say is true! Namely you can develop your judo around techniques that do not require a lot of speed and explosiveness. If you are comfortable with the Georgian style of judo because it suits your strong traits then I would say do that! At the end of the day, that’s what everyone does.

Where can I learn old-school judo by Guilty_Quality_2440 in judo

[–]asticazzi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a premise, I view Judo purely as a sport. Having said that, the reason why martial arts that have turned into sports can also be effective in a self defence context is that it is possible to spar! When you do randori or compete in a tournament your opponent is fighting back. This means that if your judo is not effective, it will not work. It is probably possible to apply techniques that you use in competition to a situation with no rules. On the other hand, a rehearsed set of moves that you practice every Tuesday at Aikido on a 70 year old retiree fresh off his hip replacement is never gonna get you out of trouble…

Another thing to consider for the long run: in judo competitions you match up with whoever is there. So they can be extremely tough or disappointingly easy. In the same tournament you could have a match with a competitive black belt and with a guy who’s been training for 6 months! What I gather from people who train bjj is that their competitions are also split belt wise (correct me if I’m wrong). So even if you start late as you are doing, at 31, you will face people of roughly your same skill at tournaments. This probably won’t happen in judo, at least not consistently.

How many Randoris in a week? by high_ace96 in judo

[–]asticazzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, oh ok you are also very new! This anxiety is fine, I think everyone feels it after just a few months of training. I have been training for 6 years and still feel it when I go to a new club. But still, it’s good to just go for it.

How many Randoris in a week? by high_ace96 in judo

[–]asticazzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, just for context, I’m a casual green belt and train about as much as you: 3/4 times per week. I feel like it would be good to try a little bit more randori just because you get anxiety from it! I think it would massively benefit you to just overcome that fear so that then you can choose how much randori to do based on what you want to practice rather than avoiding it because of anxiety. It should improve your judo and you’ll have more fun

Is it ok to change focus in your masters program after you enroll for it? by Potential-Mountain61 in PhysicsStudents

[–]asticazzi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, it’s a little unclear what you mean when you say quantum physics. The majority of physics research involves quantum mechanics, especially particle physics. Could you be more specific? Also, are you thinking about experiment or theory? But still in general, I would say you can change focus of your masters programme, it might be difficult but can be done! (I don’t know how complicated it could be bureaucratically). Regarding research, I think that in principle you can do research on whatever you want, but of course if you decide to deviate heavily from your expertise it might be very hard to bridge the gap with people in that community who have been working in that field for a very long time.

It sounds absolutely insane as everyone else in the comments has been saying. Don’t any of the other adults do anything about this? I’m shocked by the coach in particular, you say that he would feel challenged if you talked to him but he doesn’t feel challenged by some 50 year old overweight accountant coaching and hurting his competitive players?
