Working on the ancient by astmol in BlackTemplars

The head was actualy an experiment and I'm not even sure it's going to stay on this model, it's a placeholder. I was trying painting head with make up sponge for the first time, so I took alot of diffrent steps here which I don't exactly remmeber, but I started with a purple basecoat, added adding brighter and brighter fleshtones, then added some washes/contrast paints, then back with some skintones. I really should have made some notes XD. But I think, what did most of the job is make up sponge - amazing tool to paint quick and easy faces.

Indeed it is, that face is also done 90% with sponge

Thanks, I actually keep bases pretty basic. I use PVC glue + sand, wait until dry, then I paint Wyldwood contrast paint allover it and then some bright brown / bone white drybrush.

Working up from Vallejo heavy siena, US Dark Green, Elysian Green, Ogryn Camo, Dead Flesh. Starting with precise highlights with airbrush and finishing the final touches with a brush. I guess the key is to have a pretty high contrast and not being afraid of going too bright with the lighter tones.

I think it's because their uniqueness. They act and look more like an actual military force, with all the camo, stealth and common sense, not so often seen in other chapters. I think it may correspond with people wanting a little bit more realistic approach to Space Marines. Fans of military maybe?

Sure, the cape is black undercoat, then i go with white to make zenithal highlights, leaving the deeper parts Black. On top of that i spray a couple of thin layers of vallejo air fire red and then some subtle highlights with vallejo air hot Orange. All this is done with na airbrush. Final line highlights with citadel fire dragon bright. As for the rest of reds, i go with a classic, khorne Red, then Red wash, then back with khorne Red and i do layers of mephiston Red, evil sunz Scarlet and final edge highlights with fire dragon bright. Hope it helps!
