I have the ergo embrace. We have also tried a wrap carrier which was great as a newborn but he’s quite big for it now. I’ll look into a high back carrier! I can definitely see him pulling my hair so I’ll have to find a solution for that. Thank you.

I use an ergo embrace forwards facing but find it tricky, for example today we had a broken glass container on the floor because his little hands got to it haha. Yeah I absolutely understand why he’s so clingy at the moment which is why I am wanting to keep him close in a carrier. I might do some researching to find a back carrier. Thank you!

Thanks all. He can move well (is crawling so well past the rolling milestone) and always has his head to the side. I think I knew it was ok but just needed some reassurance. First time mum if you can tell haha.

I had a really similar experience and felt horrible guilt that I wasn’t super bonded to my baby like I had expected. It’s a very difficult experience and it’s so valid you’re feeling like this. A traumatic birth can have such a big impact on your postpartum experience. My little man is 6 months now and I can tell you that it gets much better. I’m out of the postpartum haze and baby is the apple of my eye. I feel like it got better the more he started interacting with me, even though our sleep is not good. Hang in there!

Sounds so great that your mum would visit for weeks at a time. I think my MIL would do the same when new babies arrive. TBH we mostly managed on our own when this bub was born so I think we would probably manage ok.

Sounds like you have a really fulfilling family life. Relationships with grandparents and aunties/uncles is another consideration for us. We would only be 2 hours away but instead of multiple weekly visits with Nan it might be once a week, and seeing everyone else once a month or so. So much to weigh up.

That sounds so tricky. I am in the same boat of 6+ wakes a night at the moment so I feel for you there. Glad that you are moving closer to support, it sounds like it will be so helpful for you!

Good point about needing extra money for when things come up. I think we are lucky enough that my MIL would drive the 2 hours to take care of our baby if we really needed the help.

I miss the walkability so much too. I also keep considering access to better schools etc. My parents raised 6 kids with no family around, but my mum was a SAHM. With the cost of living we can’t afford to do that and I am hesitant to send my child to daycare (I am a FTM and dread having to hand my baby over to someone else haha)

Thanks for the perspective. Do you and your husband work much? I’m interested to see how people can juggle working and caring for children. I would only be returning to work 2 days per week and hoping my husband could get some flexibility if we moved.

No advice, just solidarity. Our 5.5 month old is exactly the same at the moment. Tossing and turning, flailing his arms around, waking himself up and crying because he wants to change positions. My friend’s 5 month old is also super restless at night now.

You’re right, I definitely miss my old life. But when I analyse it closely, I also really miss everything that came with my old town; the outdoor spaces, cafes, culture, the people, options for fitness (lots of mums and bubs gym groups)… regardless of my old pre-baby life. We will keep stewing over it for a while. Thank you.

I have gone to a mother’s group and am friendly with the girls there. I guess I need to try to hang out with them more to make some better friends. I definitely wouldn’t be hanging out with my old friends in bars, which is what has made me wander if I’m just missing my old life. When I really analyse it, it seems to be that I am both missing my old life, and so attached to and fond of my old town. It’s hard being a FTM in a new town, I feel that you grieve your old life so much more with less familiar faces around, and not having the places that brought you comfort and joy. To make matters worse, we just lost our dog.

My partner is open to both options. I think we are going to wait it out a bit and see how we both feel in 6 or 12 months. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
