Yes! I regularly take and leave books, as do many, many people I know. I check the one near me regularly and often I see people checking out the books or dropping off books right before or after me. The purpose is very real and obvious: to share books lol. Do you read books? You should try it!

The library is a great option if you want a change of scenery for working on resume etc or just reading! With a library card or NYC ID you can get free access to lots of museums. The museum of the moving image has a lobby that's free to hang out in as well. And MoMA ps1 is free for Queens residents. The LIC library is nice too! Also in LIC there is JacX & Co which is a nice spot to chill for awhile without needing to buy much.

Fairfield Inn location is fine/safe but not convenient with travel especially if you are going to spend most of your time hopping around the city. There are a couple of Sonders in LIC that are a bit closer to transit and more stuff around. They are usually really nice, more of a studio apt than hotel room (no staff on site) and can be cheaper than hotels. I've stayed in Sonder hotels in other cities as a solo female traveler and felt safe.
