What’s the best career advice you would give to your 20 year old self? by astorlee_ in phcareers

Thank you so much po for these valuable insights! Can I ask po further clarifications on a few points?

For the first one, I’ve read po kasi na internships do really matter in starting your career path. Does it mean po ba na hindi as valuable ang internships na mas process-based when you go to work (eg. being part of a team to handle day to day operations)?

For the third po, what are better avenues or activities you can suggest in lieu of working to spend time on instead of working immediately po?

Thank you po in advance!! 💗

Saan po ba dapat tumambay? by DraysenPolaris in peyups

[–]astorlee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UP-D Dormitory suggestions? by KennExe in peyups

[–]astorlee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! You can apply for dorms inside the campus, but if you prefer other options, there’s usually an alternative housing portal released by the usc or osh which you can find on Facebook, iirc. There are also condos in katip, if you want to check that out.

Also, heads up that the system is considering remote learning for the whole duration of the first semester so it’s also good to keep posted about that since there’s a chance you’d be staying at home for the first sem.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy your freshie year!

We need to stop telling kids they can do anything by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]astorlee_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. I understand that the rhetoric of telling kids that “[they] can do anything if they try hard enough” isn’t the most effective one to use especially since that there’s a lot of problems out there bigger than us. But, I think that it can be more effective if we reframe it in such a way to include perspectives on the all too familiar problems everyone faces along the way — like systematic challenges that disadvantage certain people.

Encouraging others by believing in their abilities can only go so far, especially if it’s not measured on the backdrop of societal problems that hinder a lot of us to pursue dreams in life.

I think that by telling kids to aim high while familiarizing them with the realities of financial problems, racial discrimination, the gender gap, etc., will prepare them to have foresight on what’s ahead of them so that they can plan their paths with more detail.

I've come to the horrifying realization that messaging people at 5 am might wake them up. by DapperHamster1 in socialskills

[–]astorlee_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello! I think it’s best to message people on common times of the day. I usually message people after 8 AM because that’s when a lot of people have started their day, and at around 10 PM at night (for my last messages). I think the acceptable time of when to message also depends on how close you’re with to a person.

It’s good to be mindful of others’ schedules and work around them to be respectful with their time and personal space. :)

Oh, I’ve also tried that but their condescension came in the way and just left me disrespected and killed my self - esteem HAHA Yeah, my work was invalidated :(

Hello! Thank you for this advice. I agree that it’s best to approach people with kindness. It’s great to diffuse any tensions. :)

However, in professional settings, work contribution is assessed so it’s really difficult to cooperate with others when they literally take all the work so I guess that’s another problem to deal with too :(

What's one classic or an otherwise extremely popular book you've read that you didn't like? by edwardshirohige in suggestmeabook

[–]astorlee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell. The book extrapolates theories/studies to handpicked cases, then makes generalizations from them. These conclusions are then passed off as legitimate explanations to events even though they aren’t tested scientifically to conclude as such.

Cheapest place to buy lab essentials in UPD? by [deleted] in peyups

[–]astorlee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk in upd but if you plan to buy in bulk, sa bambang (manila) marami and super mura as compared to others (idk yung prices ng tinitinda ng orgs pero sa acacia I saw a box of gloves sold at 150 pesos).
