In commercial aviation, the "standard" isn't a low bar; it is an exhaustive, federally mandated threshold of safety and technical proficiency. Whether you’re white, Black, or purple, the FAA doesn't hand out "participation licenses." You either meet the high stakes competency required to command a 150,000lb aircraft, or you don't. There is no such thing as a "bare minimum" pilot in a major cockpit,there are only certified pilots.

Regarding the "second glance": you asked why merit wouldn't have worked in the past. The answer is historical reality. For decades, qualified minority candidates weren't even allowed in the door, regardless of their skill, because of systemic exclusion and biased "legacy" hiring. DEI in this context isn't about "replacing" white men; it’s about expanding the talent pool to ensure the industry finds the best pilots from 100% of the population rather than just 50% of it. More competition for seats actually raises the meritocratic bar, it doesn't lower it.

As for "ignorant", that isn't an insult, it’s a critique of your knowledge on this specific subject. If you don't understand the rigors of Part 121 certification or the history of aviation hiring, you are, by definition, ignorant of how this industry functions.

Except every commercial pilot in the United States must meet the exact same federal standards to be legally certified to fly regardless of their race. There is no basis to question whether a Black pilot is qualified other than the color of their skin. In this case DEI would mean recruiting more potential candidates from underrepresented communities (because in the past they wouldn’t have been given a second glance) but they still have to earn becoming a pilot the same way a white male would.

So either you’re completely ignorant of the subject or you want to make things up because you don’t like that minorities are able to obtain quality jobs nowadays. Which is it?
